MARSHAIX & BBO. sold at auction, yesterday, the residence at the corner of Anson and George streets for $9000; a lot on Alexander street, south of Charlotte street, for $1575, and 117 acres turpentine land in St. James' Goose Creek, for $475 cash. WE are indebted to Mr. F. C. VOOLEB, of the Central News Depot, No. 108 Market street, for late copies of the Siaats Zeitung and other New York papers. Our German fellow-citizens will find a capital resume of afiairs in the Old World in the above named German paper. Mr. V. has a full supply of periodicals of all kinds. PERSONAL.-We had the pleasure of a visit from E. W. DAVIS, Esq., editor of the Lake City (Fla.) Press, last evening. He is in the city on business for his paper, and will be pleased to receive any - advertisements, subscriptions, &c. The Press has a large circulation, and is, in all respects, a ster? ling sheet. THE ANNUAL MEET?NO of the Stockholders of the South Carolina Railroad was held at the Bank in Broad street yesterday. Reports were read and the usual business transacted. The stockholders were largely represented, and the meeting was quito full. An election for Pr?sident and Direc? tors of the Road, and officers of the Bank, will be . held tooday. BEAUTIES OF THE TELEGRAPH.-Our dispatches last night from Washington were more than usually - unintelligible. Whose the fault, we are unable to say; but we know that no functionary short- of a ''Philadelphia lawyer could have deciphered the dis? patch relating to the MAGBADEB Test Oath case. We were compelled to omit apart of it in conse? quence. A ROPE RAID.-Our wharves have suffered for some time from the depredations of the river thieves, and receL'iy a large amount of rope was stolen from a vessel lying at Boyce's wharf. The Detectives were immediately notified, and they instituted a search, which resulted m finding the stolen property at a junk shop where it had been -stopped. - Officer LEVY was mainly instrumental in its recovery,-and though the.thief has now es? caped, he may yet not only come tb the end of his rope, but have a rope's end applied to him. Two colored men who had been to the fire and became very much affected by the heat, or perhaps by some 2:40 whiskey, which w?B circulating around in a promiscuous manner, were so indispos? ed as to (Mmrpel a postponement of their appear? ance to. the next Court. THE RETURN OF THE WANDERERS.-The flight of. the freedmen ? has ended, and, ; their' -bright dreams of tropical idleness have faded away.. AU is not gold that glitters, and Cony soon found that bread "fruit was a mythical production, and that after al', there was no place like home. Lured by promises, and cajoled by bribes, they willingly left this State for another and a fairer land ( so-called; ; but the migratory black birds are again on the wing, and the return trips of the boats are often crowded with sea-sick and home-sick darkies. Their paradise has not proved to be the blissful abode they anticipated, and Sou.? Carolina has more charms now than all the world beside. It is fortunate for either section that they have chang? ed their minds before it was too late lu the season for planting, and if they are now wiling to accept the situation, and put their hands to the plough some good may yet result fr> un their return. . -o BARGAINS.-There is no pursuit that is followed with more zest, and no sound more sweet to the ear, than the announcement of a bargain. Know? ing the predilection of some of our fair readers for the former amusement, we take great pleasure in telling them (what, perhaps, they knew before) the place to find these treasures. With the spring time coming fast upon us, it behooves all to com? mence the search immediately, if they would wish to secure a gool selection. The Charleston House has been widely ?aiown as a receptacle for bijous of every description, but at the present time its facilities have been largely increased, and the stock is now thorough and perfect in every par? ticular. ' '. ' J Messrs. STOLE, WEBB & Co. are how prepared tb offer the public the greatest variety or goods, from the common domestic, to the rare and reckerce articles that even the Queen of Sheba might have envied. Few establishments* have made a moire enduring name than the Charleston House, and none, perhaps, one more deserving. It has been the aim of the proprietors to estabhsh a first-class - boise, and that they have not failed -in this the. voice of the public will attest.- They have recently made additions to their already full stock, and by reference to an advertisement: in another column, a list of new goods will be seen that can tempt the most inveterate shopper. FTBE.-At thiee o'clock yesterday morniug the alarm was sounded, and fire was discovered in th? store of Mr. C. W. TTLTON, corner of Exchange street and atlantic wharf. Mr. TTLT?N'S stock was composed of very inflammable material, being mostly whitey pine lumber, blinds, sashes and doors, together with machinery, agricultural im? plements, .'Sx. Every . floor w?s occupied, and there being several thousand feet of lumber stored in the building, the flames rushed madly along, completely destroying the interior, and leaving merely the'shell standing. t By the strenuous exertions of the firemen, the damage was confined to the building where the fire had originated, but the adjoining house was slightly scorched, and its stock somewhat injured hy water. The building occupied hy Mri TILTON was the property of Messrs. JOHN FBASEB & Co., and was uninsured. The stock was valued at about $15,0C0, and was insured for only $6000-$3000 in the Charleston Insurance and Trust; and $3000 in the Baltic Thsuranco Company, of New York, Mr. J. D. FOBD, Agent. The building to the east was the property of Mr. W. C. DUKES, and was insured for $2000 in Messrs. TUPPER & LANE'S Agencies, and the stock, consist? ing of corn., gunny bagging, bacon, &c., was in? sured for $4500 in the Savannah Home Insurance Company, A. M. LEE, Agent. Mr. DUKES sustain? ed hardly any injury, although the fire was in such a dangerous proximity. The damage to the building and stock will not amount to more than $100. The firo was set in the back part of tho building,-and was evidently the work of an incen? diary, as every place had been carefully examined before closing that night. Nothing was saved, as the flames raged too fiercely to make an effort. ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMSHIP SEA GULL-MORE OF TH2 TERRIFIC STORM OFF HATTERAS ON TEE 9TH.-This staunch steamer, of the Baltimore and Charleston Railroad Company's Steamship Lim reached hor berth, at' Pier- No. l'Union Whairvei at noon yesterday, after a voyage -which all o board will remember.. Capt. DUTTON left Baltimore on the 7th, P. M and, after some delay in the Bay, from floatin ice, passed Cape Henry on the 9th, A. il,.; th weather was .threatening, and, by the time th Sea Gull carno up to Hatteras, a heavy storm wa prevailing, and Capt. DOTTON, with comniendabl prudence, put his ship about, and run in unde .the shore, where he1 laid to in fourteen fathoms o water for eighteen hours, thereby escaping wha is generally conceded to be the most severe H torn of the season.. In the heaviest weather the Sei Guil proved herself a substantial ship, and whei the gale had-abated sufficiently, resumed her voy age, and made the run L'om Hatteras to Charles ton Light in twenty-eight hours-arriving off th) Bar on Monday evening, at 7 o'clock ; but, owinj to the fact that beacons along shore are not nov Ut (a great drawback, by tho way, to the port and a matter which should attract the attention o: the Government, and to which the Marine In sur?nce Companies of the country should give heed), this favorite ship was delayed until thc morning tide. The Sea Gull brings a very large assorted cargo, and even the cabins, including the Captain's state? room, are foll of corn-150 sacks being stored there. It should be a subject of congratulation tc the Stockholders that their interests are in the hands of one so prudent and thoughtful for the safety of the ship and cargo, and we have no doubt the underwriters will note the fact. The ship will have every dispatch, and it is a matter of great consequence that consignees should render assistance by the prompt removal of their goods from the wharf. REGULAS MEETING OF CITY. COUNCIL.-Council met at 5 P. M. yesterday. Present-The Mayor; Aldermen RAVE KEL, WRAGG, GERDTS, O'NEILL, Wrj.rn, STEJNMEYEB, SMALL, OLNEY, OAKES, HON? OUR, MARSHALL, COSGROVE, COURTENAY, PRINGLE, EARLE, WHII/DEN and BUTLER. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Applications for Peddling and Junk-shop Li? censes were referred to the Committee on Li? censes. The petition of W. A. BBADLEY to be allowed half the Bum paid by him for laying pavements was laid on the table. A petition for a gas light to he placed at the cor? ner of Atlantic street and Zigzag alley was refered to the Committee on Lighting the City. The petition of Mrs. CATHARINE FREAN, asking for aid to support her family, "rendered destitute by the death of her husband, was refered to the Committee on Retrenchment and Relief. The petition.of E.- J. LEWIS, to he, allowed to improve his wooden building, was:.referred to the Committee on Brick and Wooden Buildings. A petition of the .Charleston City Railway Com? pany, in regard to placing a single .track on East Bay to the Battery? was read; also a counter-peti? tion from citizens, stating that:this would injure the real estate in that section, ea pe ci a'.1 y as a char? ter-; had been granted by the Legislature for a freight railway on that street, leading to the De? pot.- The petitions were referred to the Committee on Streets. I Alderman RAVENEL, Chairman of Committee of Ways and Means, made a report on the petition pf Mr: JAB. E. SFBAR, regarding the assessment of bis property, recommended that bis petition be not granted. Adopted. , -'.Alderman.' Alderman MARSHALL moved that- the report be idopred, providing that tho city do not commit it J3l? to the support, of the Boper Hospital; and that the Registrar be authorized to' send patient? to said Hospital.. ... ? The Committee on Licenses reported favorably on 139 applications. A communication from the Trustees of Charles? ton College, stating the present condition of the Library building, and the perfect nature of its contents, and requesting' that the same be insured in the English Insurance Company, which offered inducements unsurpassed. They also referred to the necessity for a professorship of modern lan? guages; a tutorship had been formed in the High School, and it-was necessary to the advancement jf the College that it should not be ignored in this [natter. On motion of Alderman BAVENEL, the communi? cation and accompanying documents were referred :o the Aldermen Trustees, the Mayor being Chair nan. The bills of the Gas Company for lighting the nty, and of the Lunatic. Asylum for board and at? tention paid to city patients, were referred to the Committee on Accounts. The returns of the City Sheriff and Harbor flusters, also that of the City Registrar, with ables annexed, were received as information. The Mayor submitted to Council a plat furnished JV the Collector, and stated that ii was tho result jf a communication between himself and the Secretary of the Treasury regarding ihe straight? ening of East Bay. The proposition wac accepted, and the Mayor authorized to agree to t?ik terms proposed. ' The Mayor stated to Council that he had been notified that a portion of the New York Fire De? partment will soon visit our city, with a charitable intention, having with them a complete engine and aoBe, which they design presenting to a sister nty. He had been approached on tho subject by the Board of Firemasters, who wished to extend the hospitalities of our Department toward the strangers, and they had requested him to lay the subject before Council for their consideration, and state if the city would not make an appropriation for this purpose. Alderman COURTENAY offered Ihe following, that the sum of $1310 be appropri? ated for the use of the Fire Department. The Mayor stated that he had received a letter 'rom a party who was desirous of putting down a Nicholson pavement in ibis city. He had commu licated with the Mayors of several cities who save this stylo of pavement in use in their corpo? rate limits. In every instance the answers were rery favorable, and he left the subject to the con? sideration of Council, who refered the matter to mo Committee on Streets. Alderman WRAGG spoke of the necessity of ex? tending all streets to the water, and that some were now being closed; referred to the condition )f Chapel street and others. He stated that Col. BRANCH had plats of the entire city, and as the )riginals were lost it would be well to obtain co? pies. He offered the following resolution : That South street be opened from Hanover street and beyond. It was referred to the Alder nen of Wards Nos. 5 and 7. The Special Committee on the Fire Department reported favorably upon the application of the Board of Firemasters to repvir the fire well at the jomer of Smith and Beaufain streets; to locate the :ity engines in the Upper Wards subject to order if Chief and Assistants, and also to procure ten ladders and an additional quantity of hose. The Bill to establish and reg?ate the office of 3ity Civil Engineer came up for a Becond reading ; ivbich was passed, and it was then taken up for a third reading, passed, and engrossed for ratifica? tion. A Bill to regulate the constructing and ranning af passenger and freight railways in the city of Charleston, S. C., and their uses, came up for a second reading, but was postponed until th a next regular meeting. Alderman HONOUR stated that the Committee on Light'ng the Streets, having come into possession of certain facts connected with the propositions before them, have determined to withdraw their report. Alderman WILLIS offered the following resolu? tion, that, in consideration of the onerous duties now performed by Mr. B. F. WHTLDEN, tho As? sistant Treasurer, his salary bo raised from $1200 to $1600. Adopted. ? The Mayor requested leave of absence from the city for two days, which was granted; and, on mo? tion of Alderman WILLIS, Alderman HONOUR waB appointed Mayor pro lem. Alderman O'NEILL moved that additional labor be employed upon tho drains, and the work be hastened before the summer. Alderman SMALL applied for one month s leavo of absence for the City Treasurer on account of his ill health, which was granted. Alderman GERDTS moved that"the pump which formerly stood nt the corner of Franklin and Queen streetsibe replaced, which was referred to the Board of' Firemasters.
