This much praise we heartily give it, not? withstanding its objectionable political features though we must say that if Mr. GRESLEY ?nd Mr. YOUNO could fully carry out their own ideas in its columns, it would, under the circumstances, be the least objectionable daily paper to the people or tho South published in New York. The Southern people admiro an opponent if he is open and con? sistent, such as G KEELEY has over been. STATE TAXES,--It hos been generally beliored that to dodge a tax is not only fair and just, but is an action creditable to tho performer. Acting on this principle, many refuse to pay, and give no at? tention to the notices demanding a settlement. The leniency of the Government' officials has been exercised to such an extent that the quality mercy became strained, and it waa determined to put the executions in tho .hands of the Sheriff. In most of the cases a year had past and no oflbrt was made "by the partneB'previously"notified, to como forward and redeem their liabilities. Under thsHO circumstances, in spito of the poverty and destitution of thc country, forbearance has coased to be a virtue, and the demand now is cash np, or proceedings will be instantly commenced to en? force a aettl?mont. Delinquents who have hereto? fore procrastinated, are plainly told that now ia the accepte!" time, and that future delays will be indeed dangerous. A word to tho wise is suffi? cient. BBYAN presiding.-Monday having been fixed as Sentence Day the prisoners wcro in attendance, and on motion of JOHN PHILLIPS, Esq., District Attorney for South Carolina, the Court pronounc? ed sentence in the case of the United States vs. MICHAEL LOLLIS-embezzlement of two mules and a horse, the property of the United States-That he bo imprisoned in any jail or penitentiary of the State for two. years, and to pay a flue of $1000. On motion of JOHN PHILLIPS, Esq., tho District Court was then adjourned .until tho next C<>urt Term. MAYOR'S COURT, February 4.-W. Bonton, a co? lored man with strong taking qualities, who had been grabbing boxes of raisins for no other reason than the love of stealing, and who was not too stiff to pocket soveral packages of starch, was handed over to a magistrate, who will take the starch out of him. Bobert Savage, supposed to be one of a dark gang who appropriate to themselves the goods of other people, and who knew a good doal of several bundles of stolen clothes, but would say nothing, was locked np by way of making him disetos*. B. T. Williams, an interesting lemon-colored youth, who has been a few days ont of jail, where he was confined for stealing, and who waa so anxious to get back to his old quarters that he stole again, was esnt to one of those officers of the law who delight in obliging such splendid gentlemen. Ellen Palmer, an Ethiopian nymph, who was en? lightening some of the residents of tho Uppor Wards with a style of language that was not aa pleasant as pure SngJ^sh, though more emphatic, and who was not aa sober os she would have been if she had drank only Artesian water, was fined $5. THE CITY SQUARE.-From boyhood up, never having seen a larger affair than this, as a spot for the recreation of grown persons, and a play ground for little people, we have always been delighted to hear strangers and natives who bavo visited larger (sties call-"it a "park," and, as several of our travelled citizens as woll as a few of thc Aldermen consider this as a proper cognomen for this short cut from Brood to Meeting street, we shall con? tentedly consider it as the "City Park," and begin to believe that the "Conscript Fathers" are about bestowing a proper care upon it. After thc occupation of the oity by the Northen: forces, when this spot was as green and verdant aa ever, it having never been injured by the numer? ous shells which had mutilated othor pretty por? tions of tho town, and when the budding trees be? gan to throw ont their beautiful leaves and fra? grant blossoms, it seemed as if they who had con? trol of our destinies at that time were anxious thai the citizens should no longer enjoy the pleasure! which nature had allowed them on this charmin p spot, and consequently turned into the "square' hundreds of horses and mules, that they might de etroy the lofty trees that had been planted yean ago, as a memorial of the visit to Charleston of thc immortal LAFAYETTE; and in this attempt our con querors succeeded so well that -many of the fines elms and cedars, as well as others, faded and died yielding no shade nor beauty since. THE CHARLESTON HOOK A TD LADDER COMPANY; last evening celebrated their first anniversary. In answer to a poli to invitation, we repaired to the scene of festivities, at the Live Oak Club, whore wo saw an elegant supper set, and around the two tables seated a select number of tho monitors of tho Company, th? Chief of the Fire Department, and representatives from soveral of tho Fire En? giri? Companies of the city. Owing to a slight ac? cident to tho apparatus, tho Company could not parade yesterday afternoon, and it was determined to have a collation rather than a supper. But we confess wo thought tho collation a vory good supper. Af tor the inner man had been properly cared for, Foreman HILTON arose, explained the occasion of tho mooting, and offered tho health of tho Chief, which was responded to by Mr. NATHAN in a fow very appropriate remarks. He toasted tho ontiro Firo Department of the city, but, before thoro was time for a reply, tho alarm bell put an untimoly end to this pleasant reunion. TUBNVEBEIN.-We had the pleasure, last night, of attending ono of the theatrical entertainments given by the members of this club. The hall has boen recently refitted, and looked very inviting. It was handsomely decorated with festoons of ever? greens, tastefully ariMigcd all around the room. The stage and aconery also have undergone an meliorating metamorphosis. Tho hall was bril? liantly lighted with elegant, chandeliers. There iras a good audience, both of ladios and gentle? men, who, to all appearance, enjoyed themselves rory much. His Honor the Mayor, and other dis inguished guests and visitors, were among those cresent. There wore two plays given; the first "Der Alex ?ndriner,'' a very pleasant short genre-drama; tho ?ext "Seikein Krebs," written expressly for tho Turnverein, by Mr. H. L. I)EDEN. This piece pos? asses a good deal of humor, and shows a fine mnwlodgo of human nature. The actors and ictrossos did themselves groat credit, for tho artis? te manner in which they went through their seve al parts. -o TEE Ton.ETtft.BY THE SEA.-A party of submarine voyageurs, who make their living on the great raters, left the city yesterday with the intention >f making a reconnoissance off Sullivan's Island. Choy intend visiting the wrecks that line tho shores if that island and obstruct the channel, but whe? ller the trip will bo productive of any good ro? il ains yet to be seen. Preparations were evident y made for a long stay, as the porty took a supply f provisions sufficient for several day a. Their on? set is no doubt to thorougvly search tho wrecks nd define their correct position and location to he harbor pilots, who can then avoid them. Being arnished with submarine armor, they can remain .nder water several hours, and aro as much at tome when submerged as on terrafirma. The armor is a curiosity of itself, and when i horoughly accoutred and ready for tho plunge, ho wearer bears no resemblance to tho human arm, but rather to some water fiend who glares lal gnantly from his huge glass eyes. This div iig dress, or armor, is composod of huge overalls, rhich come up to the neck, and aro several sizes oo large; the helmet is screwed tightly upon thom, nd a long gutta percha tubo attached; this is onneoted with an air pump, and when the diverts horoughly inflated, he would find it a difficult latter to sink if it wero not for the heavy pieces j f lead attached to his dress. When the descent is accomplished, the diver \ omniunioates with tho upper world by means of j ords, and can breathe as easily by the medium of is air tube, and soe as plainly through his glass i ye, os circumstances require; but it is an arduous j undertaking, and requires a long apprenticeship, j THE HANLONS.-Thia unrivalled troupe again . lelighted and entertained a large and select an- ' hence, many being turned from the door on ac ount of the crowded state of the house. An en irely new programma was announced, and it .roved to be of sufficient interest to induce many o repeat their visits without fear of subjecting he m s elvo s to the title of "dead heads." Tho three nen of the air, whose feats are so complicated and ?explicable that they appear to bo aided by ?agic, were of course the prominent features of he evening, and elicited unbounded applause by heir daring actions. Aa gymnasts they have no quals, and are perfect specimens of tho result of raining upon the muscles, and their most difficult -ja ts are porf mn ed with an ease and grace that roves conclusively their right to the champion hip. Unfortunately the contracted space pres? ented them from displaying their most popular lanoouvres, but enough has been shown to excite he admiration of all beholders. Professor TANNEB, with his wonderful troupe of nimals, was one of the stars of the evening, and dded greatly to the merriment of the occasion, [ho dancing was superb, and the Juggler, with tis mystic art, reminded the audience of the days if PEABOAH, and they would not have been in the east surprised to have seen him change a stick o a serpent. The Sphynx und the Pantomime were vhat might be expected from such an entertain uent, and afforded a pleasure to all who witnessed hem, if the cachinnation that was unanimous over he hall was a fa'r criterion. The HANLONS have earned an immortal name Luring -their stay in Charleston, and their mirth irovoking performance will be remembered while ?fe and memory lasts. They repeat their enter ainment to-morrow night, and all who have not et paid thom a visit should not hesitate to avail hembolvoa of that opportunity, as on Wednesday ight they will close their exhibitions in this city. ?c-morrow afternoon the Managers have kindly onsented to give a matinee for the benefit of those rho are unable to attend in the night. THE COURTS-The three Courts which have been lolding their sessions in our city for the past nonth, concluded their labors and adjourned sine lie on yesterday morning. The Judges who have conducted the business of these Courts have labor id unremittingly, and are entitled to the thanks >f the community for their prompt administration >f justice. Sfejdom in tho annals of our city has euch an uray of crime been presented for trial. Every >in mentioned in the Decalogue has been com? mited, even the most heinous murder, and in ipi le of the utmost precaution, picking and B teai? ng is followed as a vocation by all who are toe azy to work. To remedy this evil, and to secure ustice to the freedmen, who have been in almost ?very instanco the transgressors, the District Dourt was created. This was designed principally a try petty misdemeanors and crimes that wert not felonies, and the extraordinary large numbei hat have been tried and sentenced, proved con ;1 naively the necessity for the Court. The relie thus afforded to the Court of General Sessions hat been considerable, and has enabled that Court t< rive its undivided attention to the trial of the capi tal offences, of which it had a large docket. In either Court the utmost leniency was observ ed, and the prisoners supplied , with able counsel who undertook the defence cheerfully, and laboi ed conscientiously and persistently Aar thei chests. ' In ono instance an appeal was made, th counsel for the defence considering that all th technicalities of the law had not been observ?e and the trial consequently was futile. Crimini cases occur so frequently that it has long bee the custom to grant them the first hearing, ant until they are disposed of, the civil docket ri mains in abeyance. This system was religious adhered to during the late sessions, and was pr ductive cf groat good to the accused, in many i stances shortening their term of imprisonmer, The United States Court has also been engagi in the hearing of many important-cases, princlpi ly violations of tho revenue laws, embezzlemei &c., all having received an impartial trial, ai sentences based upon a firm conviction of th? guilt or innocence. Tho adjournment of thc Courts would have imposed a holiday upon the ! gal fraternity, L' it were not for tho opportune i rival of Chancellor LESESNE, who offered a rt field for their prowess by opening the Eau Coort. As thia Court decides questions involvi large amounts, the attendance is voluntary, a the attention marked. Wrixs_The activity displayed by tho laborers in romoving the dirt and mad from th? man-holes of tho Tidal Draina, has excited sorna oniulalion among the authorities, and the Fire Do partmcnt, with praiseworthy zeal, have determined to go tho whole hog, and have commenced opera? tions on tho Fire Wells. Theos wells, somo two hundred in number, aro scattered throughout tho citr, and have an average depth of seventeen to twenty feet. They were dur many years ago, be? fore tidal di sins wero dreamed of, but are not suf? fered to decay on that account-their efficacy has boon too often tested, and their proximity to a fire has frequently prevented its spreading. Whan first dug, they were carefully arched over and bricked up, and it was supposed that no further attention would bo necessary; but, in process of time, the mud and sand choked tho spring, and the flow of water became somewhat retarded. In order to remedy this evil and restore the wella to their former condition, tha Department determin? ed to havo thsm cleaned, and the laborer? have been busily employed, for tho past month, in re? moving the wator by moans of a double pump; when this is effected, a maa descends armed with a spade, and th? superfluous dirt and sand is brought up ia a bucket. In some placos from fifty to sixty bucket loads have been drawn up before tho well is co .isidcrod froo from impediment. Tho time omployod m cleansing these wel.s varies; r-ut from ono to two is generally a day's work. Tho absence of wator works in oar city has always been larnoo tod; hut it is gratifying to soe that the moans we still possess aro not suffered to bo lost from neglect, but that overy effort is being made to place the city in a state of security, should it be our misfortune to be again afflicted with another large fire.
