FRIDAY MORNING, JANUAR i 18, 1867.
A LITERARY CURIOSITY.
The poem below, which was first published in the
Knickerbocker Migazhie, is maio up of eisglolines
from twonty-fire English and American poets, bu
?inning with Longfellow and ending with Byron,
t would take some timo to affix each writer's name
io his line er lines, though the majority are, of
.ourse, well known:
-"Pearls at random strung.
By future poets shall be sung."
Tho ni tr nt has come, but not too soon;
Westward tho course of empire takes it way;
Ye banks and braes ot' bonnie Doon 1
Blue spirits and white, black spirits and gray.
Bocked :n the cradle of the deep,
Old Casper's work waa doue;
Piping on hollow reeda to his pent sheep.
Charge, Chester charge ! On Stanley, on i
There waa a sound of revelry by night,
On Linden when the sun was low;
A voice replied far up the hight.
Tall oaks from littlo acorns grow.
What if a little rain should say,
I have not loved the world, nor the world mo:
Ah 1 well a day I
Woodman, spare that tree 1
Hy heart leaps up with joy to seo
A primrose by the water's brim:
ZacchcHs he did climb tho tree;
Few of our youth could cops with him.
Tho prayer ol Ajax waa for light,
The light that never was on sea er shore.
Padding and beef make Bri to IIB tight
Nevermore!
Under a spreading chestnut treo,
For hours the gather sat,
I and my Annabel Le *;
A man's a man for a' that.
Truth crushed to earth shall rise again.
And wasts iu sweetness on the desert air.
Ia thunder, lightning, or in rain,
None but the brave deserve tho fair.
Tell me not in mournful numbers.
The child ls father of the man;
Hush, my dear, lia still and slumber,
They can conquer who believe they cam.
A change came o'er the spirit of my dream;
Whatever is, is right;
And things are not what they seem;
My native land good night I
