long been celebrated as a day set apart for closing
old accounts, and wo would not have our friends
depart from this time-honored custom. Monoyis

o'clock, that Bennett's Mill was on fire, brought out
. the firemen, who nuhod to the scone of action
only to find their energies uselessly expended, and
they returned homowards with diminished speed.
Later in the evening it waa reported that a chim?
ney in Magazine street was on fire. It was soon
extinguished, and tho alarm wan not sufficient to

bronce of our editorial wants. Knowing that the
monotony of long and unvaried city life tends to
dull the faculties, he has considerately sont ns an

in the rural port? are making.
A like courtesy has been extended us by the

THE BALL last night, at the Hall of the Bruder?
liche Bund, in King street, was one of the most
successful affairs of the kind that has come off
this season. It was given under the auspices
of Schiller Lodge No. 30, I. 0. 0. F., a now
Lodge, but one that bids fair ero long to run
ahead of many of her older sisters. The Hall was
filled with gay and merry dancers, just as many as
the Hall could hold, and under, the witching
strains of MULLER'S Band, they tripped tho light
fantastic to a 'ate hour of tho night. Mr. YON
HAAEDTKB furnished a handsome supper.
The Committee of Arrangements deserve much
credit for tho handsome manner in which every?
thing had been prepared.
DISTRICT COURT.-This court was in session to?
day at the usual hour, Judge LOGAN presiding.
A number of cai1 es of larceny and assault and
battery were tried-some, os on previous days
beiig decidod by the court.
H. W. SCHBUOEB?_ RUDOLPH SOQLLNG, JAMES
LOWNDES and JAMES SIMONS, Eaqs., defended some
of the cases-the prosecution in each instance be?
ing conducted by ISAAC HAYNE; Esq.
From five to six case? are disposed of evory day,
and although the docket is very heavy, at this
rate the list will rapidly diminish.
UNITED STATES DISTBICT COUBT-Hon. GEOBOE
8? BHYAN presiding.-The libel case against the
schooner Grapeshot was resumed. Several wit?
nesses were examined on the part of the defence
who testified that the segara from Baracoa were
of .an inferior character and were never imported
to this market; that they cost but little there, and
the duties being the Hame on all brands, dealers
only used the better qualities. The market prico
of the segars exhibited in court (those that were
seized) was $30 to $35 per 1000 for the second
quality, and from $40 to $50 per $1000 for the
better. The profit on segara was very uncertain
as dealers were often obliged to sell at cost, and to
realize the difference on better brands.
A lengthy argument arose on points of evidence
during the testimony of the witnesses in reply
and the discussion was continued to a lato hour.
The case will be resumed to-day at ll A. M.
MAYOR'S COURT, January 17.-Elias Robertson
and Paul Green, two unfaithful colored stewards of
a steamboat, who had appropriated to their own
use a large amount of money belonging to a pas
Benger, were sent to a Magistrate for prosecution.
^?youthful speculator, who had endeavored to
dispose of several iron bolts belonging to the
Northeastern Railroad Company, to tho keeper of
a junk-shop, who brought him up before his
Honor, was discharged with a lecture, as a witness
stated that the boy had found them on Gadsden's
Wharf.
A man and two females, who had walked from
Summerville on their road to Graham's Turn Out,
by the way of the city, and who had sampled some
of the luxuries which abound in the corner shops
to such an extent os to impede their locomotion,
but who had recruited after a nap, were allowed
to proceed on their way, as they evidently were a
committee about carrying out some grand social
reform, and were in a great hurry to get off.
COUBT OP GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON
PLEAS.-The Court met at 10 A. M., pursuant to
adjournment, Judge T. N. DAWKINS presiding.
The Grand Jury having answered to their names,
the following bills were presented, 'vhich were re?
turned with the findings :
The State vs. Thos. Harrington-murder. True
Bill.
The State vs. Wm. J. GMllin-embezzlement.
. No BUL
The State vs. Angelo Mauro, Jno. B. Fa tal i co and
Yeugenzo Ottojano-arson. ?o Bill.
In the case of the State vs. DANIEL JENKINS, for
murder, the prisoner was arraigned and plead "not
gr?lty,7.a?d the trial was fixed for Thursday, Jan?
uary^.'
Tho case of the State vs. Isabella Clark (color?
ed), for burglary, was then taken up. L. W.
SPBATT, B.W. SSYMOUB, and SAMUELLOBD,Jr.,
Esqrs., appeared for the defence, and tho Attor?
ney General for the prosecution. After a "number
of challenges tho Jury was organized, and Mrs. | (
MABY GALLOWAY being sworn, deposed that sho
kept a storo at No. 197 King atreot, in connection
with her mother, and was living there at the time
of the burglary. They had missed a number of
articles constantly, but on the day in question had
put $325 aside for tho purpose of paying a note.
$30 of this amount was missing the next morning.
That night (Isabella being sick) she went to her
room to carry her some physic, and while there
noticed a shirt and some other articles that be?
longed to tho store ; hor suspicions being aroused,
the woman was sent out the next morning, and,
while absent, her room was searched. A uumbor
of missing ariicbs were found concealed in her
bed, also some falso keys with whickshc obtained
access to the store. --Tho woman slept over the
kitchen, and could only obtain access to the storo
at night.
Mrs CHUPEIN substantiated the tostimony of the
first witness in every particular, and said that abe
was present at tho acarch, and identified the arti?
cles found and those brought into court as a part
of Mrs. GALLOWAY'S stock. She also testified to
having found tho bunch of keya that were used to
open the different locks.
The Attorney-Genoral waived the burglary, the
larceny being made out. The opposite counsel ac?
cepted the proposition, and the case was submit?
ted to the jury without argument, who returned a
verdict of guilty of petty larceny.
THE KINGS-TREE FIRE.-It will bo seen, by refer?
ence to an extract ia another column from toa
Star, that the sheriff and jailor of 'Williameburg
District were arrested by order of Gen. SCOTT,
Military Commandant, pro tem, in South Caro?
lina. This arrest, wo behove, is for alleged crimi?
nal carelessness and neglect of duty.
THE AirjaucAK LAW RBVIEW, January, 1867. Boston,
Little, Brown k Co.
Contents : 1. Wallace's Report; 2. Thcorios of Recon?
struction; 3. Estates upen Condition; 4. Luther Martin;
P. Pigest of English Law Reporta; C. Digest of LawB in
U. S. Supreme Court; 7. Seleclod Digest of American
btateReporta; 8. Book Notices; 9. List of Law Books
published since 1st September, 18C6; 10. Summary of
Events.
. We take pleasure in recommending this work to
members of the Bai-, both for what it is and what
it is not; both because it contains a great deal of
law, and becauBo it contains no politics. It gives
tho earliest notico, in condensed form, of decisions
ia this country and England; it permanently re?
cords many which will never be reported, and, in
the last three articles, gives a great deal of inter?
esting information in regard to books and matters
connected with the law, while the original articles
arc not of much value to tho profession, they will be
found to possess merit. That upon Reconstruc?
tion, by HUED, tho author of "Habeas Corpus,''
may not present palatable conclusions, but is writ?
ten in a judicial spirit, and the review of Wallace's
Report is a just rebuke of the flippancy of the
present facetious and unreliable reporter of the
Supreme Court or tho United States. The critic,
howover, fails to object to the opithot "Corsair,"
invariably applied to the Alabama by Mr. WAL?
LACE, who, in dcing so, shows disrespect to the
Court, of which he is an officer, and tho late record?
ed decisions of which sanction a very different view
of the Alabama's legal status from that implied in
the foreign "Corsair."
The Law Magazine is published quarterly at
$3 for the year's subscription, and is sold in thia
city by E. G. DAWSON <fc Co., Meeting street.
THE GEEMAX LUTHER AH CHURCH.-The old
church, corner Hasel and Anson streets-hitherto
the onlyhouaeof worship of our Protestant Ger?
man population-has for some time been found
too small to accommodate the increasing congre?
gation. There is a German population in Charles?
ton of between four and Svo thousand ; and we
may look forward, ere lot. g, to largo accessions.
There have been, for some time past, no leas than
fifty applications for pews that could not be tilled.
Thia matter has boen under consideration for
some time, and at last it waa resolved upon to
erecta new church edifice. On the 10th instant
the Vestry purchased the property formerly occu?
pied by Father O'NEILL, on the wost side of King
street, a few doors south of Vanderhorat stroot.
The lot has 125 feet front on King stroet, and is
159* feet deep.
This location is central, and in ono of the finest
parts of the city. It is the design of tho vestry to
construct a largo and handsome church and a
school house, with ample accommodations. The
Sunday School attached to thit, congregation now
numbers 325 pupils, and Mr. HOPEMAN'S Genr.ai
Day School 180 children, the best uossible proof
that the heart of the people^is in the work.
The meeting on Wednesday nigh.1 was well
attended, a large number, both of communicants
and members of tho congregation, being pr?sent.
Tho meeting approved of the action of tho Vestry,
lt was resolved that the old Church Bhall bo sold,
as soon as a suitable opportunity shall present
itself.
Committees were appointed to canvass the city,
and solicit voluntary contributions, and as we
know our German fellow-citizens for years have
helped others of every denomination to build their
churches, we hope thai a helping hand will be lent
them in return, now that they are in need. There
are many Germans here of wealth and position,
30me doing a large and lucrative business, and we
cannot doubt that they will be animated with a
roirit of liberality, and come forward with a hand?
some contribution.
It was also resolved, at the proper time, to have
a. fair to aid in the building of this church and
school house.
Great harmony and unanimity pervaded all tho
leliborations of the evening.
Tho following is the committee appointed to
;anvass the city :
ALBERT BISCHOFF, Chairman.

iTiend," is engaged, as many of our readers know,
u soliciting aid for the establishment of a school
or the benefit of the children of those who have
>een made poor by tho war, to bo located at Co?

THE APOCALYPSE, the latest production of JOHN
IABTTN and GUSTAVE DOBE, with thc original Mil
onian Tableaux of Paradiso Lost, from London,
pons at Hibernian Hall on Monday evening next,
he uniform testimonials of approval elicited from
he press of both this country and Europe are
onfirmed in the impressions which the exhibition
linkes upon every class of witnesses. Tho fol
awing encomium from ono of the moBt distin?
guished divines of Europe shows that tho exhibi?
ten is deserving of the many and complimentary
lotices it has received from the press of this
ountry: "St. James'Hall was filled last evening
0 ita utmost capacity. Many were unable to ob
ain seats to witness these celebrated tableaux.
Jever have wo seen anything on canvass so terri?
fy grand and sublime. Heaven, hell, chaos, and
laradise aro reproduced, aa described in MILTON'S
Teat poem, illustrating the grandest subject with
a the reach of mortal imagination. To be prop
riy appreciated they must be seen, and we will
ot, therefore, attempt a description of the grand,
eantiful, and sublime scenes portrayed, but ad
?86 our citizens to visit the tableaux, as they will
rovo both highly interesting and instructive. It
