Later in the evening it was reported that a chim? ney in Magazine street waa on fire. It wa : ^oon extinguished, and tho alarm was not sufficient to bring out the engines. Conductor. THE BALL last night, at the Hall of the Br?der? liche Bund, in King street, was one of tho moBt successful afiairs of tho kind that has come off this aoaaon. It waa given under the auspices of Schiller Lodge No. 30, L O. O. F., ft new Lodge, but one that bids fair ere long to run aheid of many of her older sisters. The Hall was filled with gay and merry dancers, just aa many aa the Hall could hold, and under the witching strains of MULLER'S Band, they tripped the light fantastic to a late hour of tho night. Mr. VON HAAKDTER furnished a handsome supper. Tfce Committoo of Arrangements deserve much credit for the handsomo manner in which every? thing had been prepared. DISTRICT COURT.-This court was in session tc day at the usual hour, Judge LOOAJ? presiding. A number of cases of larceny and assault and battery were tried-some, aa on previous days, being decided by the court. H. W. SCHRODER, RUDOLPH SEEDLING, JAMES LOWNDES and JAMES SIMONS, Esqs., defended some of the oases-tho prosecution in each instance be? ing conducted by ISAAC HAINE, Esq. From five to six cases aro disposed of every day, and although tho docket is very heavy, at this rate the hst will rapidly dlrriiiiish. UNITED STATIS DISTRICT COURT-Hon. GEORGE S. BBYAN presiding.-Tho libel case against the schooner Grapeshot was resumed. Several wit? nesses wero examined on the part of the defence, who testified that the segara from Baracoa were of an inferior character and were never imported to this market; that they cost but little there, and the duties being the same on all brands, dealers only used the better qualities. The market price of the segara exhibited in court (those that were seized) was fttO to $35 per 1000 for tho second quality, and from $40 to $50 per $1000 for tho better. The profit on segare was very uncertain, as dealers were often obliged to Bell at coat, and to realize the difference on better brands. A lengthy argument arose on points of evidence during the testimony of tho witnesses in reply, and tho discussion was continued to a late hour. The case will be resumed to-day at ll A. M. MAYOR'S COURT, January 17.-Elias Robertson and Paul Green, two unfaithful colored stewards of | a steamboat, who had appropriated to their own use a large amount of money belonging to a pas? senger, were sent to a Magistrate for prosecution. A youthful speculator, who had endeavored to dispose of several iron bolts belonging to the Northeastern Railroad Company, to th? keeper of | a junk-shop, who brought him up before his Honor, was discharged with a lecture, as a witness stated that the boy had found them on Gadsden's "Wharf. ' A man and two females, who had walked from Summerville on their road to Graham's Turn Out, by the way of the city, and who had sampled some of the luxuries which abound in the corner shops to such an extent as to impede their locomotion, but who had recruited after a nap, were allowed to proceed on their way, as they evidently were a committee about carrying out some grand social reform, and were in a great hurry to get off. COURT OK. GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON PLEAS.-The Court met at 10 A M., pursuant to adjournment, Judge T. N. DAWKINS presiding. The Grand Jury having answered to their names, the following bills were presented, which were ro turned with the findings : - The State ci. Thoa. Harrington-murder. True Bill. The State os. Wm. J. Gilfillin-embezzlement. No Bill. The State vs. Angelo Mauro, Jno. B. Fatalico and Vengenzo Ottojano-arson. No Bill. In the case of the State cs. DANIEL JENKINS, for ! murder, th? prisoner was arraigned and plead "not guilty," and the trial was fixed for-Thursday, Jan- | nary 24. The caso of the State VB. Isabella Clark (color- | ed),* for burglary, was thon taken up. L. STRAIT, R. W. SEYMOUR, and SAMUEL LORD, Jr., Esqrs., appeared for the defence, and the Attor- I ney General for the prosecution. After a number ! of challenges the Jury was organized, and Mrs. MARY GALLOWAY being sworn, deposed that she kept a store at No. 197 King street, in connection with her mother, and was living there at tho time of the burglary. They had missed a number of articles constantly, but on tho day in question had put $325 aside for the purpose of paying a note. $30 of this amount was missing the next morning. That night (Isabella being sick) she wont to her ! room to carry her some physic, and while there noticed a shirt and some other articles that be? longed to the storo ; her suspicions being arousod, the woman was sent out the noxt morning, and, while absent, her room was searched. A number of missing articles were found concealed in her | bed, also some false keys with which she obtained access to tho store. The woman slept over the kitchen, and could only obtain access to the storo at night. Mrs CHCFSIN substantiated the testimony of tho first witness in every particular, and said that she was present at the search, and identified the arti? cles found and those brought into court as a part of Mrs. GALLOWAY'S stock. Sho also testified to having found the bunch of keys that wore used to open tho different locks. The Attorney-General waived the burglary, the larceny being made out. The opposite counsel ac? cepted the proposition, and the case was submit- [ ted to the jury without argument, who returned i verdict of guilty of petty lar cony. THE KJNOSTBEJ? FIRE.-It will bo seen, by rofor onco to an extract in another column from thc Star, that tho sheriff and jailor of Wimarnsburg District were arrestod by order of Gen. Tho critic, however, fails to object to tho cpithot "Corsair," invariably applied to tho Alabama by Mr. WAL? LACH;, who, in doing so, Bhows disrespect to the Court, of which he is an officer, and tho late record? ed decisions of which sanction a very different view of the Alabama's legal status from that implied in tho foreign "Corsair." Tho Law Magazine is published quarterly at | $5 for the year's subscription, and is sold in this city by E. G. DAWSON & Co., Mooting street. THE GEEWAN LUTHERAN CHURCH.-The old church, corner Hasel and Anson streets-hitherto tho only house of worship of our Protestant Ger? man population-has for sumo time been found too small to accommodate tho increasing congre? gation. There is a German population in Charles? ton of bet-reon four and five thousand ; and we may look forward, ero lorg, to largo accessions. There have beon, for some time past, no less than fifty applications for pews that could not be filled. This matter has been under consideration for somo time, and at last it was resolved upon to erect a ne .v church edifice. On tho 10th instant tho Vestry purohased tho property formerly occu? pied by Father O'NRTLL, on tho wost sido of King street, a few doors south of Vanderhorst street. Tho lot has 125 feet front on King street, and is 159J feet deep. This location is central, and in ono of thc finest parts of the city. It is the dosign of tho vestry to construct a largo and handsome church and a school house, with ample accommodations. Tho Sunday School attached to this congregation now numbers 325 pupils, and Mr. HCFFMAN'8 Ge nea i Day School 180 children, tho best possible proof that the heart of the people is in tho work. Tho meeting on Wednesday night waa well attended, a large number, both of communicants and members of the congregation, being present. The mooting approved of the action of tho Vestry. It was resolved that the old Church shrill be sold, as soon as a suitable opportunity shall present itself. Committees were appointed to canvass tho city, and solicit voluntary contributions, and as we know our Gorman fellow-citizens for years have helped others of every denomination to build their churches, we hope that a helping hand will be lent them in return, now that they are in need. There aro many Germans hero of wealth and position, some doing a large and lucrative business, and we cannot doubt that they will be animated with a spirit of liberality, and come forward with a hand? some contribution. It was also resolved, at tho proper time, to have a fair to aid in tho building of this church and school house. Great harmony and unanimity pervaded all the deliberations of the evening. The fol? lowing encomium from one of the most distin? guished divines of Burope shows that the exhibi? tion is deserving of the many and complimentary notices it has received from the press of this country : "St. James' Hall was filled last evening to its utmost capacity. Many were unable to ob? tain seats to witness these celebrated tableaux. Never have we seen anything on canvass so terri? bly grand and sublime. Heaven, hell, chaos, and paradise are reproduced, as described in MILTON'S great poem, illus tra ting the grandest subject with in the roach of mortal imagination. To be prop? erly appreciated they must be seen, and we will not, therefore, attempt a description of the grand, beautiful, and sublime scenes portrayed, but ad? vise our citizens to visit the tableaux, as they will prove both highly interesting and instructive. It is deserving of the many and complimentary no? tices it has received from the press.
