KANA PAUX, acting Coroner, held an inquest, yesterday morning, on the body of JOSEPH SELVES, a Spanish j seaman. Thc verdict of the Jury was: "That the Baid Joseph Selves carno - to his death by being Btruok on the head aud face by a heavy piece of lumber, which slipped from ita slins while being hoisted on board the brig Carmen, this morning, at Wappoo Mills. No blame can be attached to any one." DTTST.-One of the annoyances and inconveni? ences of city life is the quantity of dust whioh the wind, in dry seasons, stirs up, and which settles upon our clothing, adheres to ocr ? Ians and troubles our senses. It is trna that gonerallr, in irell-nianaged towns, there can be found persons who, for a consideration, will, by means of a water cart, consent to keep down the "vile dust,"* but who are quite neglectful of their business until the near approach of a shower, at which time they display a zealousness and an activity that should afford an excellent example to that class of people know as ;"slow coaches," and consequently these watery machines are rather getting out of fashion, as one part of tho .population begin to think it rather hard that they should pay for a fall of rain I that benefits the whole. But while dostisdisa- j groeable to the pedestrian, how much more un? pleasant is it to those who ride, especially whore the trip is a rapid ono, a ad the car or carriage is of such a construo'ion as to produce a great draught; and it is this thought which makes us wonder how the Street Railway Company will pre? vent this great nuisance from annoying their j passengers during tho 'summer." That they are determined to afford comfort to all who patronize ; them we fcol confident, and would suggest that this matter bo considered by the Direction at an early day. j MAYOR'S COTJBT, January 10.-Robert Johnson, a youthful specimen of black humanity, who threw a basin of water from a ft ont window, to the great danger of passing sun-sets and soa-s?des, was fined SI. A chimney was reported os having been afire, and it being proved that moro than amo?th had elapsed since it was swept, the contractor was fined $25. Lewis Lake, a man of very dusky hue, who got drunk on tangle-leg bitters, and was butting against posts and people in tho street, was fined $5. Lewin insisted that he wasn't so tight as peo? ple thought, but that it was trouble that made him weak in the knees-having worked for a long time on a crop, and thon only getting half paid, he took another half in whiskey, and his mind was BO wor? ried that he staggered. This explanation was very clear, but it did not have tho effect of reducing the fine. Three men, who had usod tho'sidewalk for a mattress, and were found comfortably in bed, were made to pay $5 each for their lodging. A tavern keeper, who had attempted to eject from his establishment a Sergeant or Police, who went in the house officially, waa fined 820. -: '.. Amanda Doty, an aged female, lato of Beaver Dam, the widow, no doubt, of some: venerable Doty of African doicent, who war clothed in a thin frock, a soldier's sack, and an original wide? awake hat, and who had applied for lodgings, was sent in a cart, ondor a guard of honor, to the col? ored people's Alms House, where she will havo time to indulge in any quantity of-reflections ' on'1 the mutability of human affairs. BEAL ESTATE SATE.-The old Exchange pre? sented a far more hvolyappearanee yesterday ?an it has for years past. It seemed as if it had shaken off its lethargy, and forgetting that it was but a desolate shell-battered building, had turned to the days when, as the post?nico, it was daily and hour? ly crowded. The marble steps, which time and th? constant tramping bf a thousand feet had worn into hol? lows, were again ascended by an eager crowd, and it seemed as if "the post was but a dream," and we had not lived through six years of trouble. One perceptible difference, however, was the change of faces, many who were alwavs present at an estate sale haying been gathered ?o their fathers; but the attendance waa as large and the bidding as spirited as in the days when We knew not the greenbacks. A large amount of valuable property, a portion of the estate of Rev.. Patrick O'Neill, deceased, was sold under tho direction of the Master in Equity and by Messrs. Leitch & Bruns, real estate brokers. As this property offered for sale com ?irised many valuable houses and lota in the Upper Cards, the bidding was lively and the prices real? ized were almost equal to the ante-bellum era. The'dwellin? house and lot of the Rev. P. O'Neill (on the west side of King street, between Vander horst and Calhoun), and four lots immediately south, brought the sum of $12,110. Six lots and one dwelling, partly on King and Ratcliffe streets, realized $17,380. Four lots in Cannon street, near the comer of RuUedere, 30ld for $5,725. . One lot, with several wooden buildings, on Arin street, opposite tho Park, brought $2,050. This has been' one of the largest real estate sales of city property that has taken place for acme time, and, considering the universal depression, and the stringency of the money market, tho prices real? ized show that the depreciation of property is not so great as has been believed. THE TIDAL DRAINS.-When this enterprise was started, some years since, it was hardly thought that it would proveas efficacious as at present; but the experiment (for at first it was scarcely more) has proved eminently successful, and these subterranean sewers now radiate in every direc? tion. Dorine- the war it was found impossible to attend to tho necessary cleaning properly,- and, as a natural consequence, the drains became choked and the supply of water in the man-holes was very inadequate for any emergency. The City Council have recently given the subject their serious attention, and, though the supply of water con never be made sufficient for the uses of the fire department, yet the cleaning process will be of great benefit to the city. Bv a recent enact? ment the office of Keeper of the Tidal Drains was formed, and the incumbent .required to bestow his undi vi de i timo and attention upon the drains, to Bfce that they were cleaned properly and hooded at the rieht time. -- V? Under this new regime the laborers have been busily engaged in removing ihe dirt ' that has ac? cumulated for pear Iv'six years. This process i-r very fatiguing and laborious, but the result has been very satisfactory, and the large amount of sand and mud that have been removed shows that the operation was not commenced too soon. The main drains in Meeting street, on account of their size rad the frequency of the man-holes, were more accessible and easier clansed, but it was found necessary io break extra holes into that* on Calhoun street, before the mud could be re? moved. In some : places this had - accua.ulated to such an extent that but a few inches of space re? mained between the surface of "the water and tho roof of the drain. The mud that is removed from these openings is used by the city in filling np the excavated lots and low'grounds within its pre? cincts. Although these drains will never answer the double purpose intended, viz: as sewers and inex? haustible fire wells-yet there is little doubt that they answer the first purpose admirably, and have grown in favor from their origin.' . A complete sys? tem of sewerage has always been considered indis? pensable to the health and comfort of a large city, and the tidal drains of Charleston are but the nucleus from which, in a few years, branches will shoot in every direction. Paris, London, and the different European and American cities, have paid great attention to this subject, and their huge underground arches are among the wonders of the world. In some of tho Northern cities sewer hunting ia a profession, and some persons have realized handsome . muns by their dirty work. ' Unfortunately the South, and especially our own city, is too poor to offer any at? tractions in this Uno, and though there aro many openings presented, nothing is found in them but tuai. ; -.Jr i , THE HISTOR? The sculptures arid paintings of, Egypt repre? sent a general rise of the umbrella, and the recent discoveries at Ninevah show, that it was generally carried over Kings in time of peace, and even in war. In shape those resemble very closely thoso now in common use, but are always seen open in the paintings. From the vt?ry limited use o? "the umbrella, in- Asia and Africa, it seems to have passed as 6 distinction and a luxury into Oroeco and Italy. At Homo, when the veil could not be spread over the roof ot the theatre, it waa the custom for females and offominate men to defend themselves from the sun with the umbracuhtm of that period. Th? umbrella was used in England as a luxuri? ous sunshade - ??Hr ir tho 17.'ii century. Ben. Jonson montions it by name in a comedy produced in 1616. In those days the umbrella was compos? ed exteriorly of feathers in imitation of the plum? age of a bird: afterwadds oiled silk was tho ordi? nary material, and Swift says in bis "City Shower:" "Tho tucked up seamstress walks with hasty strides* While streams run down her oiled umbrella's sides." Thoso early specimens, when wet, wore exceed? ingly difficult to opon or to close. The stick was heavy and inconvenient, and the article generally very expensive. It was originally ho d in a fashion tue reverse of the present, for it then had a ring on tho top, by which it was usually carried on the finger or hung up when not in use. On account of their rarity and cost, they were carefully preserved and religiously guarded; but as yoars rolled on manufactories were established, and umbrellas became what they are at present-cheap, sorrice able, and easily appropriated.
