E KANA I>?UX, acting Coroner, held an inquest, yesterday morning, on the body of JOSEPH SELVES, a Spanish ' Beaman. The verdict of tho Jury was: "That the said Joseph Solves carno to his death by being struck on tho head and face by a heavy piece of lumber, which slipped from its sling wiuie being hoisted on board tho brig Carmen, thia morning, at Wappoo Mills. DUST.-Ono of the annoyances and inconveni- ' enees of city Ufe is the quantity of dust which the wind, in dry seasons, stirs up, and which settles upon our clothing, - adheres to our skins, and troubles our senses. Lewis insisted that he wasn't so tight as peo? ple thought, but that it was trouble that madehim weak in the knees-having worked for a long time T on a crop, and then only getting half paid, he took another naif in whiskey, and his mina was so wor? ried that he staggered. This explanation was very clear, but it did not have the effect of reducing the fine. It seemed as if it had shaken off its lethargy, and forgetting that it waa but a desolate shell-battered building, had turned to tho days when, as the postoffice, it was daily and hour? ly crowded. The marble steps, which time and the constant tramping of a thousand feet had worn into hoi- i lows, were again ascended by an eager crowd, and it seemed as if "the past was but a dream," and we -, had not lived" through aix years of trouble. One perceptible difference, however, was the change of c. faces, many who woro always present at an estate t sale having been gathered to their fathers; but the attendance was as large and the bidding as spirited as in the days when wo knew not the greenbacks. A large amount of valuable property, a portion of-the estate of Rev. Patrick O'Neill, deceased, was sold under the direction of the Master in Equity and by Messrs. Leitch & Bruns, real estate brokers. As this property offered for salo com? prised many valuable houses and lots in the Upper Words, the bidding was lively and the prices real- - ized were almost equal to the antebellum era. ? The dwelling house and lot of the Rev. P. O'Neill (on the west side of King street, beta eon Yauder horst and Calhoun), 'and four lots immediately r south, brought tho sum of $12,110. Six lots and one dwolling, partly on King and 8 Ratcliffe streets, realized $17,880. I Four lots in- Cannon street, near the comer of ; Rutledge, sold for $5,725. One lot, with several wooden buildings, on Ann street, opposite the Park. brought $2,050. This hos been ono of the largest real estate sales of city property that has taken place for s .me time, - and, considering the universal depression, and the stringency ot the money market, the prices real- i ized show that the d?pr?ciation of property is not so great as has been believed. THE" Tm?L DBAE?s.-TWhen this enterprise was " started, some years 'since, it was hardly thought that it would provo as efficacious as at present; but the experiment (for at first it was scarcely more) has proved eminently successful, and these subterranean sewers now radiate in eveiy direc? tion. Darinc the war it was found impossible to - attend to the necessary cleaning proporly, and. as a natural consequence, the drains became choked and the supply of water in tho man-holes was very s inadequate for any emergency. x The City Counc?have recently given the subject their serious attention, and, though the supply of ^ water can never be made sufficient for the uses of j the fire department, yet tho cleaning process will 1 be of .great benefit to the city. By a recent enact- . ment the office of Keeper of the Tidal Drains was formed, and tho.incumbent required to bestow his undivided time and attention upon the drains, to see that they were cleaned properly and flooded at the right time. Under this new regime the laborers have been , busily engaged in removing the dirt that has ac- ' cumulated for nearly six years. This procos:- is very fatiguing and laborious, but the result has been very satisfactory, and the large amount of * sand and mud that have been removed shows that the operation was not commenced too soon. The main drains in Mooting street, on account of their size and the frequency of tho man-holes, were more accessible and easier clansed, but it j was found necessary to break extra holes into that on Calhoun street, before the mud could be re? moved. In some places this had accumulated to such an extent that but a few inches of spaco re- c mained between the surface of the water and the t roof of the drain. The mud that is removed from these openings is used by the city in filling up tile 1 excavated lots and low" grounds within its pre? cincts. Although these drains will never answer the I double purpose intended, viz: as sowers and inex? haustible fire wells-yet there is little doubt that they answer the first purpose admirably, and have t S-own in favor from their origin. A complete sys- e m of sewerage has always been considered indis-, pensable to the health and comfort of alarie cit}', and the tidal drains of Charleston are but tho " nucleus from which, in a few years, branches will shoot in every direction. Paris, London, and tho differont European and American cities, have paid great attention to this subject, and their huge underground arches are among the wonders of the world. In some of the Northern cities sewer hunting is a profession, and some persons have realizod handsome sums bv < their dirty work. Unfortunately the South, and 1 especially, our own city, is too poor to offer any at- " tractions in this line, and though there 'are many openings presented, nothing is found in them but < mud. THE HISTORY OP THE UMBRELLA.-The weeping I skies that ushered in tho new year, and the aubsc- - quent flood that threatened to cngulph us, caus? ed much hurrying to and fro and Booking for shel? ter. Umbrellas were captured from the unwary, and even Daniel's celebrated biro cotton would not have been safe from sacrilegious hands. It hos been derided by some learned judgo, who. probably-h.? d just made an umbrella, that they were hot "property, and therefore liable to be sequestered when seen lying around loose. Be thia asrit may, umbrellas have always been an in- - B ti tu tion, and from the earliest ages were used as articles of luxury and as a shade from the sun. The sculptures -and paintings of Egypt repre? sent a general use of-the umbrella, and the recont discoveries at Nb: "vah show that it' was generally carried over Kings in time of peace, and even in war. In shape these resemble very closely those now in common use, but ore always seen open in - the paintings: From the veiy.hmiteduse of the umbrella in Asia and Africa, it seems to have passed as a distinction r.?d a luxury into Greeco ] and Italy. At Rome, when the veil could not be spread over the roof of tho theatre, it was the lustom for females and effeminate mon to defend themselves from the sun with tue umbraculum of that period. Tho umbrella was used in England as a luxuri? ous sunshade earlv in the 17th century. Ben. Jonson mentions it by name in a comedy produced in 1616. In thoso days the umbrella was compos? ed exteriorly of feathers in imitation of tho plum? age of a bird: afterwards oiled silk was tho ordi? nary material, and Swift says in his "City Shower:" "The tucked up seamstress walks with h?isty strides, Whilo streams run down her oiled umbrella's sides." These early specimens, when wot, wore exceed? ingly difficult to opon or to close. Tho stick was heavy and inconvenient, and tho article gonerally vcry exponsivo.
