Chicago erected $8,000,000 worth cf new build? ings last year. _ -, Bo BEET TYLER, Esq., son of the late President during the war Register of tho Confederate Treas ury at Biohmond-is now engaged in the practice of law in Montgomery, Ala. In Berlin horse meat has found 80 muchfavoi that tho number o? horses slaughtered in a yeal bas already roached two thousand six hundred and ls constantly increasing. ?. The Charlottesville, Va., Cluronide says that ii Nelson the farmers get hands cheaper than ii Albemarle^. "We learn i?&at'tho price for geo* hands has ranged from $66 to $90. The friends of SIMON OAMKBON aro urging hi election as United States Senator in preference t THADDEUS STE VZSB, on the ground that the latte is BO old-that he might die beforo the complotio of his Senatorial term. They forget that only goo boys die young. So says the New York Wor?d. The largest estates in the county of Sohmalka dan, in Hesse, which the King of Prussia has late] made a present of to the Buke of Coburg-Gothi in acknowledgment of his friendly policy, are est mated at $2,600,000. The yearly revenue Sweden, some time nineo provided each of the vehicles with a water reservoir, from whioh tl passengers can quench their thirst. They ha* now extended their courtesy by providing esc traveller with a newspaper giving the latest int< ligence, and which he can read while in the omi bus. Advices from Morocco state that the pilgriz have not yet returned from Mecca. The lossc sufferings, difficulties of the voyage, and the a prehension of the cholera, which was raging Arabia at the period of departure for the celebr tion of their religious feies, havo so diminish' the numbers that only seventy-three embarked Mbgador, where they ordinarily collect by hu dreds and someta r es by thousands. The Journal of commerce, of the 6th, says : 1? are informed that the telegraph lines were work direct from Hart's Content, N. P., to New Orleau La., and various other points in the States, duri: Thursday evening. Conversation was carried < with as much rapidity and ease as over short di tances. Yesterday morning London telegrams that date were received in New York at 820 A. M I Richmond has a number of. convicts in h prison, and wanted to make them work for thc living. To this end the authorities instituted i- chain gang, and set the prisoners to work in tl streets. Early one morning they were sent out, b one of their number, finding that there was no h to compel them to work, flatly refused to bear hand, an example which was followed by all t: others. So the investment is a failure. REYNOLDS, the painter, whose colors once brilliant, have sadly faded with age, was morta afraid lest the -secret of his mixing his cole should be made public. The inmates of his o\ house did not know it, for he sent one relation one shop to buy some of his ingredients, a another person to a second shop to buy ott colors, and kept the miking of them a great seer smart mot of a French bishop ls reported the Parisian journals. An abbe, editor of a : ligious paper, was indicted for having discuss political questions in the columns of the jour under his direction. The bishop of his diooe who was in court during the trial, "was invited the Procureur-General to take a seat on 1 bench. "No," replied ha, "the post of honor day is by the Bide of the-accuseu." The abbe T acquitted.' The New York Eoenxng Express sayB: "Upwa: of two thousand immigrants from Europe arri1 at this port on New Year's day-nearly all of th in steamers. The passage money, in the agg gate, must bea handsome sum; but it all goes i the coffers of the foreign steamship line-Radi high tariff legislation, for the benefit of Ta STEVENS and other iron'mongers, compelled . withdrawal of all competition on the part of - steamers carrying the United States flag." The Montreal Gazette notices the first bio made in that part of tho world with pure peat ft and pronounces it of tho very highest qnali equal to the best Swedish iron. The bax was b cold by a vice; and doubled up close at right. gles with an edge, without a crack or flaw appe ing, the outer comers remaining smooth t sharp-a test which, it is said, no coal iron mi in Canada will stand. WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 9, 1867. TBE LIEE AND CRAB ACTER OF BISBOP ELLIOTT. Wo take pleasure In announcing to our read ers that tho next issue of our WEEKLY will contain an able and elaborate biographical memoir of the above-named late lamented pre? late, written by tho iiand of affection. Those desirous of procuring extra copies should send intheir names in time. . CHEAP TRANSPORTATION. We have a letter from a merchant living OE the line of the Charlotte Railroad, and hopeht will pardon the liberty we taite in giving hil views to the public, although they were onlj meant for the private editorial ear. He says .Build the South Carolina Railroad down ti lhrpowAr-- jep^i." ?'\?a,v?>J^b8Ju1oy41B6W ^iffij through, and we up-country merchants wil have all our goods shipped through Charleston Otherwise, we will continue to receive througl Portsmouth, where there is no drayago, wharf age, etc., etc., which causes the expenso of get ting packages through Charleston to be great er than the charges on other lines." Merchants buy in the cheapest market, am ship their goods by tho cheapest routes. It i: ! idle to contend against either of these proposi tions. It therefore becomes the capitalists merchants and public men of Charleston to set to it that this city shall offer facilities, both ai a commercial emporium and a connecting lin! ; between the shipping of the North and the net work of railways South and West of us,-infe 1 rior to no other port on the South Atlantic oi Gulf coast. If the reshipment of freight ix our city is attended with unnecessary expens* and delay, and through that means turns com? merce from our port,-in fact, draws into othei channels the trade that is legitimately ours ; then is it obvious that these obstacles must bi removed. The suggestion of our correspond ent, quoted above, is worth heeding. If th< j railroads terminating is Portsmouth, Ta., ha vi their through freight system so arranged aa i< avoid additional charges, and make it an in ducement for merchants to ship by that route our duty is plain,-i. e. to follow their exam pie. lhere is'no reason why the South Caroli na and Northeasters and Savannah Railroad! should not land their freight at the water side The outlay is a mere trifle, and the convenienoi great, palpable and permanent. We hope therefore, to see some action taken is this mat ter at an early day. REFORX IN ENGLAND. There has been another great reform demon stration is England. The Trades Unions (th conservative elemest of the lower strata of En glish oooiety) have given their adherence ti the movement; and a general coalition is ii prospect of the bone and sinew of tho thre< kingdoms. The questim has long since out grown its original proportions, and the prinv movers may well stand in dread of thc fate o SAMELE, who, though well warned of the terri hie power of Jove, persisted in desiring a bodi ly. manifestation of his ..^presence, was grati fied-and crushed. It is perhaps well for Mr GLADSTONE that his measure was defeated ii the late Parliament, and that he and his col? leagues were compelled to resign. . When Mr. GLADSTONE in May, 1864, launohec that "thunderbolt," as it was called is th? Esgliah papers, in which he declared the righi of all mes to vote, he placed himself at once at the head of the liberal' party is England. He said: "Less than one-fiftieth of the working classes are in the enjoyment of the franchise," and continued : " fVhat are the qualities that flt men tor pol?tica] privileges? Are they not self-command, self-con? trol, patience ? unrter Buff-1 ring, confidence in the law, and respect for-superiors? And when, I should like to know, is the . history of. this or'any other country, were those qualities inore prominently exhibited than by the working peon?a of Lanca? shire under the pressure of the cotton famine?" To this he added the proposition, whioh -wa? the gist of his speech : ,. "I contend that wies you would persist in'ex cludine forty-nise-flftietha of the wnrfcw alagsss from the franchise, it lies with you to show the In? capacity, the unfitness, the misconduct of those classes as unfitting them for ita enjoyment," : This was, perhaps'; sot ai prudent Speech; for a Chaacollor ef the Exchequer, but it is con? tended by his. friesds that if he had bees per? mitted to carry his Reform Bill through, the popular-demand might have been met for the time being, and Mr. BBIGHT and Hs friends rendered harmless. We admit, however, that we cannot see exactly how the remedy pro? posed by Mr. GLADSTONE could have succeeded in produoing more than a mere temporary lull in the storm. He proposed to concede more thas the Conservatives were willing to yield, and at the same time fell far short of the de? mands of the Radicals. If the progress of events should reinstate Him in the Cabinet, a very probable contingency, he would find no little difB?ulty, ia the sight of either party op? posed to him, to consistently pursue the line of policy he had marked out for himself last year. It is not easy for us to obtain accurate in? formation of the progress pf this reform agita? tion in England. The numbers presentr at the recent ^demonstrations aro variously stated 20,000 to 100,000.^ The papers in the interest of reform predicted ;there would be a quarter of a million of people in the processions. The. Tenet says the number did r>?* ?.--??t'l"zz,000.. . ;??- The cor--arVxjaentif pf the Northern Radical Journals, all of coarse in-Strong sympathy with ?JOHN BBIGHT, complain in almost every tetter of the apathy of the great mass of the middle classes inEngland. Their r?v?rence forroy? alty, and, the- _other hereditary institutions of the land, is such that they refuse to see their own degradation, and slill. look 'w?h:4Utrust: upon Mr. BROWN and his coadjutors..
