THURSDAY MORNING. JANUARY 3. 1867. LOCAL MATTE BS. THE N?w YEAB.-ISM died a watery death, ?nd 7G was horn in toars. Jupiter PlnviuH was evident? ly the presiding: deity on that occasion, and his efforts have boen crowned with signal success. '.Tho oldest inhabitant" scarcely remembers to have seen muddier streets, or ti> have exp-rionced greater difficulty and danger in crossing them. At tho down-town terminus of the City Railroad a vast expanse of mud meets thc oyo, and it requires some strategy to effect a crossing in safety. East Bay was in no belter plight, but in some places const deralo hands had phtcod Et caping stones which were hailed with pleasure by the muddy pedes? trians. Thc street oars Itavo redoubled 1 hoir popa hunty by the present weather, but it is no easy task to reach them through thc rand that thick soft and watery, is everywhere to bc teen. Three days' rain have completely changed thc face of na? tur;?, and we now live hi an atmosphere of mud Nothing loss than a bloomer could stand thc pres? sure, anderen tiltareons have been forced to re? main within doora. VALUABLE CLEARANCE.-The Ano ship Mary Og? den, Captain HATHAWAY, was cleared yesterday for Liverpool by 3Icssrs. W. B. SMITH & Co., having on board 47 bales Sea Island and 2350 hales Upland Cotton, valued nt $131.237. ATTENTION is called to a notice of a public meet? ing recently held in this city by the surviving mombcrs of the South Carolina Regular brigade. We most heartily commend tho objoct of thc meet? ing to thc attention of the public. UNITED STATES CIRCUIT COURT.-The great Bank case of MCCRAE and others rs. Tee Bank of Charleston and others, lias been assignod for trial to-day. Thc questions to bo submitted involve the responsibilities of incorporations for thc bills and debts of tho banks, and the trial will no doubt b noticed with interest by thc community. AT THE regular mooting of Jefferson Lodgo, Nb 4,1. 0. 0. F., held on Tuesday evening, let inst, the following ofi?ccrs were duly elected and install ed for tb? ensuing term : Bro. v .. WILLIAMSON. N. C. Bro. WM. E. MILLIGAN, V. G. Bro. W. A. KENYON, Rec. Secretary. Bro. JAMES SLLOOX. Per. Sec. and Treasurer. Bro. M. CORDOVA, O. D. G. Bro. B. LEVY. I. D. G. TYPOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.-Tho anniversary of this Society wa? duly celebrated at their hall cn Tuesdayaftcmoon. A fine collation had beon pro Tided through the generosity bf Slr. J. H. V?LLERS, which thc Typos soon knocked into pt. After the regular business of the day was over and the col? lation, duly disposed of, they proceeded to an elec? tion of officers for tho ensuing year, which resulted in the folio win g chqico : *L. P. ASHBY, President IC. A. D. CHURCH, vice-President. T. F. O'SULLIVAN. Treasurer. IS. D. HUTSON, Secrotary. Finance Committee'.-M. Tracy, Joseph W. Rutland and Jo ha Utes. Committee en Relief-T. F. O'Sullivan, C. F. B. Bromcr, and G. W. Niclcerson. Committee on Burial Lots-Jas. B. O'Reilly, T. F. O'Sul- 11 livan and John Ute*. .Vice J. B. 0'REIU.Y, declined a re-election. tF?eeL. P. A sn BY, sleeted President. t Vice C. F. B. BREMER, declined re-election. SHOOTING.-A policeman named EVABS, who was on duty.on North Atlantic YVharf, on Tuosday night last, went on board of tho brig Cliebucloo, lying at that, spot, and after some conversation with the steward of thc vessel, threatonod to shoot him. Tho steward, in reply, whilo opening his shirt, told EVABS that he had a fine breast to shoot at, and that he had better fire away; and after a word or two moro, the policeman did fire his pistol, and inflicted a very severe wound in the cheek of thc steward. In leaving tho brig EVABS fell oror board, but was rescued, cud is now at tho Guard House under arrest. EKANCTPATION DAY-According to the pro? gramme this day was celebrated by tho freedmen, though not in tho stylo no; with tho display con? templated. The miserablo weather thinnod the procession very much, and before they reached their destination they were hardly moro than a straggling crowd. Thc parado created no excite ment for sevoral reasons, principally because there were few in the streets beyond tho partici? pants. Speeches were made ky some of tho cra? ters, congratulating their hearers on having ob? tained the blcssiugs of freedom, and bidding them to continue in their aspirations, and to press steadily onward to thc goal. FIEE.-About 7; A. M.. on New Year's morning, smoke waa discovered issuing from thc promises t-f Mrs. BONN EAU, on tho west side of Smith street, two doors from .Boaufain. Thc firemen were promptly on hand, and by their exertions tho Uro was confined to tho front rooms of tho houso, but in order to approach thc lire, tho flooring had to be cut away. The accident was caused by a de? fective flue, which communicated tho fire to the floors. At tho time of thc fire the houso was oc? cupied by Major SMITH, of tho Freedmen's Bureau, but as he had commenced moving tho evening be? fore, hiB'farniture was comparatively uninjured. The damage done by thc fire, water, and the fire? men's axes tb the property, will probably amount to $2000 or $S0O0, which was covered by no insur? ance, the Bureau having had possession of tho house since the occupation of tho city. MAYOR'S COURT, January 1.-Henry Johnston, a colored waiter at the Kantors' Ile lei, who, upon tho evidence of Mr. W. BROWN, had drawn a knife and stabbed CH ABLES COSTAR, a white attendant at tho same establishment, was sent to a magistrate for prosecution. The case of F. FERNANDEZ, a sailor, who cut ISAAC TAYLOR in two places. ? t tho boarding houso of LOBDOBIO & LAWLESS. NO. 1 Queen street, was disposed of in tho samo way. A female, whe is suspected of selling lirpior with? out a license, was dismissed with a warning. Sampson Sanders, one of tho blackest of our African fellow-citizens, who got druuk from stand? ing by a hot stove, and then wont out sud raised a promiscuous row, was hr.ed S3. January 2.-Peter Roberts, an individual of very dark complexion, who had takon a nip or two of prepared corn water, and consequently was dis? posed to be riotous and uso bad language in thc publie streets, was fined S5. William Jarvis and William Jones, two odored sportsmen, who wore stirring up tho game within the precincts of tho city, and liriag their pieces with a rapidity that prevented their bringing any? thing down, were themselves bagged, and after paying $5 each, bad to submit to tho mortification of having their splendid "Mantons" confiscated. At thia season, which is usually looked upon as one when men givo too free . reta lo indulgences, and riots and .tumults ore tho consequence, it is nighlv ^ratifying to observe how quietly the holi? days have passed in our city, and to note the trivial case6 which havo been recorded on the Mayor's bc ok. Wo sincerely hope it may long con? tinue so. CELEBRATION* OP THE I. 0. 0. F.-Tho j>tiblic celebration of thia order, which was to have taken place on the first, was postponed on account of tho inclemency of the weather ; but in Ihc evening, the Library Association of thc Odd Fellows met at their Hall, corner of Liberty and King streets, and celebrated their first anniversary. An address suitable to thc occasion was delivered by thc orator of tho day, Mr. L. P. ASHBY. Tho Associa? tion then proceeded to an election for oGiccrs, which resulted in the re-election of tho old incum? bents. Business being over, an adjournment to tho more congenial clime of Tulloy's was moved and carried, and the mcebcr.;. with somo invited guests, proceeded to discuss a supper which had been prepared for thom. Alrhough they were odd fallows, yet thoy were not at all singular in their tastes, but did "ample justice to the spread, cre? ating such a havoc that thc tables were soon cleared. The spirituals haring made their appearance, the President announced the following toaste : "Our Belated Order." d Which was replied to by the President, F. D. I 4 PTNCKNEY, who gave "The Orator of the Keening."1 Responded to by Mr. L. T. Asnr.v. Dr. JNO. H. HONOUR. .Tr.. Grand Secretary, Mr. J. G. MABTTN, Grand Representative, and others, subsequently spoke in response to calls, and gavo some account of Odd Fellowship during tho late struggle, showing that while other Corporations ! and Associations had felt the blighting touch of ' war, yet Odd Fellowship had stood finn, and was now stronger than ever before. Among the toasts of (he evening was "The Virtuous Press : The great Palladium of Liberty." No representative of any of thc editorial staff being present, it was bri o? ly responded to by Mr. L. P. ASHBY, of the DAILY NEWS oflieo. The Association separat ?d ata late hour;fally satisfied that Tulley knew a thing ur two in Iiis line, and that it was difficult to spend a moro pleasant New Year's Day. Alderman Wragg, on tho same subject, spoke of the condition of tho wall at present, a-d whit it was before tho accident. Tho wall originally left standing remained so at request of owner, w'n o con? sidered it secure enough to rebuild upon ; that tho anfortunate man, by using tho premisos, daily ex? posed his life by bis temerity, and Council was not responsible. Ho, therefore, offered the followiug : Resolved, That hi9 Honor tho Mayor be, and Qcroby is, empowered to colloct the facts connect? ed with the death of Thea. A Bill of Alderman Ens ton's to appoint an In? spector of Steam Engines and Boiler' within the ?mit? of tho city came up for its second reading, :hc title was changed so as to read the City Steam Engineer, instead of Inspector. Alderman Ger d'ts, from the Comm i Kee on Streets, 'ecurred to the petition of tho Street Ballway Com? pany, and moved that tho petition of the Company >e granted, provided both extensions be laid be? ere thc lBt of June next. THE BALL OK SYLYEST3B-EVKNINO.-ThoJGerman Artillery Assooiation, Company B, according to ire viona announcement, had a ball at Hibernian Sall on New Year's eve. The Hall was crowded rith the gay and fair. This waa perhaps the most successful ball of the season. There wore as many is ono hundred couples somotimcs performing on :he "fantastic." and others impatiently waiting for their torn. MULLER'S Band was in attendance sufficient proof in itself that tho affair was a lively >ne. Mr. SCHRODER prepared the supper, and 'rom tho neat and clean work made by the opcra ,ors, he has every reason to believe that his efforts not with the fullest appreciation. The Committee >f Arrangements deserve great credit for the hand tome manner in which tho affair was gotten up.
