SHOOTTNO.-A policeman named EVARS, who was on duty on North Atlantic Wharf, on Tiieaday night last, went on board of thc brig Chebuctoo, lying at that spot, and after some conversation with the steward of thc vessel, threatened to ?hoot him. Tho steward, in reply, while opening his shirt, told EVARS that he had a fine breast to shoot at, and that he had better fire away; and after a word or two more, the policeman did (trellis pistol, and inflicted a very severe wound in tho cheek of tho steward. In leaving ihn brig EVARS fell over? board, but waa rescued, and is now at the Guard House under arrcat. EMANCIPATION DAT.-According to the pro? gramme this day was celebrated by tho freedmen, though not in the style nor with the display con? templated. The miserable weather thinnod the procession very much, and before they reached their destination they were hardly moro than a straggling crowd. Thc parado created no excite? ment for sevoral reasons, principally because there were few in the streets beyond tho partici? pants. Speeches were made by some of the era tors, congratulating their hearers on having ob? tained the bloasings of freedom, and hiddhig them to continue ia their aspirations, and-to press steadily onward to t he goal. FIBE.-About 7j A. M., or. Now Year's morning, smoke was discovered issu ing lVom the premisos of Mrs. BONXEAU, on tho west side of Smith street, two doors from Beaufain. The firemen were promptly on hand, and by theil- exertions the fire was confined to the front rooina of tho houso, but in order to approach tho lire, the flooring had to be cut away. Tho accident wis caused by a de? fective fine, which communicated thc fire to the floors. At tho time of tho fire the house was oc? cupied by Major S:>IITI?, of the Freedmen's Bureau, but aB he had comment ru moving the evening be? fore, his furniture was comparativo]? uninjured. Tho damage done by the Uro, water, und tho fire? men's axes to the property, will probably amount to 42000 or ?-300O, which was covered by no insur? ance, the Burean having had possession of tho house since the occupation cf tho city. MAYOR'S COURT, January i.-Henry Johnston, a colored waiter at the Planters' Hete!, who, upon the evidence of Air. Vi'. BROWS, had drawn a knife and stabbed CHARLES COSTAE, a white attendant at the ?ame establishment, was sent, to a magistrate for prosecution. The case of F. FERNANDEZ, a sailor, who cut ISAACTAYLOR in two places. . t the boarding house of LOBDOBIO &, LAWLESS, No. 1 Qneeu street, was disposed of in tho same way-. A female, who is euspocted of selling liquor with? out a license, was dismissed with a warning. Sampson Sanders, one of the blackest of our African fellow-citizens, who gol drunk from stand? ing by a hot stove, and then went out and raised a promiscuous row, was fined SS. January 2.-Peter Kobcrts, an individual of very dark complexion, who had t aken a nip or two of prepared corn water, and consequently was dis? posed to be riotous and uso bsd language in the public streets, was fined S5. Winiam Jarvis and William Jones, two colored sportsmen, who were s;irr?ig up the gamo within the precincts of tho city, and firing their piecos with a rapidity that prevented their bringing any? thing down, were themselves 'nagged, and after paying $5 each, had to submit to the mortification of having their splendid "Mantons" confiscated. At this season, which is usually looked upon as one when men give too free a rein to indulgences, and riots and tumults are the consequence, it is highly gratifying to observe how quietly tho holi? days have passed in our city, and to" note the trivial cases which have boon recorded on the Mayor's bcok. F.-The public celebration of this order, which was to have taken place on tho first, was postponed on account of the inclemency of the weather ; but in tho evening, tho library Association of tho Odd Fellows met at their Hall, corner of Liberty and King streets, and celebrated their first anniversary. An address suitable to the occasion was delivered by tho orator of tho day. Mr. L. P. Asnr.Y. The Associa? tion then proceeded to an election for officers, which resulted in (ho re-election of tho old incum? bents. Business being over, an adjournment to tho more congenial clime of Tulley's was moved and carried, and the moc.bcrs, with SOTHO invited guests, proceeded to discuss a supper which had been prepared for them. Although they were odd fellows, yet they wore riot t-.t all singular in their tastes, but did ample justice to tho spread, cre? ating such a havoc that thc tables were soon cleared. The spirituals having made their appearance we President jounced the following toasts : "Our Beloved Order." ^Which was replied to by the President, F. D. PracrorEY, who gave "The Orator of the Etienina." Besponded to by Mr. L. P.'ASHBS. Dr. JNO. H. HONOUR, Jr., Grand Secretary Mr J. G. MARTIN, Grand Representative, and others' subsequently spoke in response to calls and gave some account of Odd Fellowship during the late struggle, showing that whilo other Corporations and Associations had felt tho blighting touch of war, yet uaa ieiiowB?ip hart stood nrm, and was now stronger than over before. Amongthe toasts of Hie evening was "The vrrtuous Press : Tho groat Palladium of Liberty." No representative of any of thc editorial staff being present, it waa briefly responde 1 to by Mr. JJ. P. The Association separated ata late hour, fully satisfied that Tulley know a thing or two in hi? line, and that it was .difficult to spend a more pleasant New Year's Day. Tho Mayer considered that tho action of tho Committee was irregular, as no previous notico had boen given, so as to allow tho citizens of that section to express tho r opinion on the subject. Alderman wragg road the first report of tho Com? mittee on Tidal Drains, which represented tho con? dition'of said drains. Tho Mayor reported favorably on tho application of Mr. F. Clausson on tho erection of a steam on ginc. i The Mayor then referred to tho melancholy acci? dent of la'st week, and quoted tho verdict of tho jury on that occasion, and referred to tho strictures of eorao of tho press published. He stated that tho premises nt tho time had been examined by hun. and he held himself as head of Council entirely ac? quitted of blame, and ho recommended that a com? mittee bo appointed by Council to thoroughly in? vestigate tho matter and report. Aldorman Wragg, on the same subject, spoke of tho condition of the wall at present, and what it was beforo the accident. Tho wall originally loft standing remained so at request of owner, who con? sidered it secure enough to rebuild upon ; that tho unfortunate man, by using tho premises, daily ex? posed his life by his temerity, and Counc? was not responsible. Ho, therefore, offered tho following : Resolved, That his Honor the Mayor be, and horebv is, empowered to collect the facts connect? ed with the death of Thoa. Considerable dis? cussion arose on fil ing the blanks in tho Bill, when Alderman Bavenel moved that the Bill be printed as amecded and brought up for future dis? cussion. On motion of Alderman Marshall the Bill was taken up for its third reading, which was passed, and its title changed to an Act. j Alderman Wragg moved that the Keeper of Tidal Drains be allowed to contract fer g-ates for drains. The Mayor stated that he had already made con ! tracts for some which would be furnished at lowest rate. Alderman Wragg explained his motion to mean an upright grate, instead of the kind now used, but subsequently withdrew the motion. Alderman Gerdts, from tho Committee on Streets, recurred to the petition of the Street Railway Com? pany, and moved that the petition of tho Company bo granted, provided both extensions be laid be? fore the 1st of June next. Aldorman Butler moved that tho resolution be .-nendod by inserting that the Company offer po .ndrance to any other road from hereafter cross? ing them. Motion and amendment carried. Alderman Whildcn moved that Council proceed to an election of Chimney Contractor at next meet? ing. Carried. Alderman Whildon introduced a Bill to define the rights and privileges of street railways, which came up for first reading. Aldermen Olney and Willis were assigned to different committees. There hoing no further business, Council ad? journed. THE BALL ON SrLVESTKR-KViNrNO.-TheJGerman Artillery Association, Company B, according to previous announcement, had a ball at Hibernian Hall on Now Year's eve. The Hall was orowded with the gay and fair. This was perhaps the most successful ball of the season. There were as many as one hundred couples sometimes performing on tho "fantastic," and others impatiently waiting foi their turn. MULLER'S Bond was in attendance sufficient proof in itself that the affair was a livelv one. Mr. SCKBODBB prepared the supper, and from the neat and clean work made by the opera? tors, he has every reason to believe that his efforts met with the fullest appreciation. The Committee of Arrangements deserve great credit for the hand? some manner in which the affair was gotten up.
