OURNEWFOR2T.
Tm: CitAisLKSTox OAM.v NEWS bids ?ls
readers this morning ti happy New Year, and
dors so iu a new dress. Heretofore we ap?
peared in royal quarto, now in imperial folio.
Upon thc first cnlargcmcnt'of Tut: NEWS WC
determined upon au eight-page shed, being
thc form most generally in use in all large
cities, both in Europe and on this Continent.
That form oilers many nd va ul ages over the
four sheet [Kiper, and an experience of years
has pronounced in ?ts favor. Our opinion on
this subject has uot changed: hut thc reading
public of this city, always having been accus?
tomed to four-pagesheets,seemed unwilling lo
surrender their preference for thc old custom.
Wc thus ? ad continual solicitations for such a
change from our patrons. Thc advertisers all
wished to have their announcements on thc
outside half of the paper. None wanted to be
"stuck away** on thc inside. To obviate this
difficulty wc have at lust yielded to a general
desire of our friends and have entered TUB
NEWS on a new four-page race, for which wc
would bespeak thc same regard and pa?
tronage, our old octavo friend so largely en?
joyed. Thc Old ?'NEWS," in retiring (with ils
venerable friend, 1 SOO), tenders its most polite
and heartfelt acknowledgments to a very large
circle of readers, friends and well-wishers,
and hoping thal it has not been herc in vain,
respectfully solicits their continued counte?
nance for tts new-born bigger brother-the
large four-page sheet, commencing with this,
the first day of thc year 1807.
NEW YEAR.
Another grain of sand has f?llen from the
hour-glass. Another station on the highway of
life has been reached by thc weary pilgrim. An?
other unit of life is gone, and death is by one year
nearer to al! of us. It is a time for thought
for solemn reflection. Have wc progressed
during the past, three hundred and sixty-five
days? Arc we wiser or better! Has the
growth of years brought soothing to the
troubled spirit '.' Have wc learned to calm our
passions, and to open our hearts and hands to
thc prompt ings of heaven-born charity ? These
aro meditations .ind interrogatories naturally
suggested by the season, and happy those of
our readers whose conscience will answer them
in thc affirmative.
How is it with our City ? How with our
State? Again the cry is: "Watchman, what
of thc night ? Is it long yet to thc morning's
golden dawn ?" Where are wc now ? Have
wc progressed since last wc heard thc annuiu*
watchman's cry ? Wc then were under mili*,
tary rule. Our rulers since have become civil,!
but still wc enjoy a military guardianship. Our j
representatives were knocking al thc door of
Congress then ; wc now have concluded to j
remain quietly and peaceably at home, awaiting \
levclopmcnts. Thc future then was dark and j
?loomy; it is cloudy still, but he of hopeful i
emper may already sec the dawu of a brighter !
lay. The National Executive has "remained I
;ruc to thc Soutli (/'. c. true to thc fundamental j
aw of thc land), and now another buckler will
>e held up for our defence in thc declarations
)f the highest judicial tribunal in thc couutry.
IVe may reasonably, therefore, hope that the
lay ol' deliverance is nearer, by twelve months
o-day, than it was January I, lSGU.
We have nothing to boast of, and cant!ot
latter ourselves with any great degree of
>rosperity. Thc crops were short ; thc people
ire poor-many of them suffering for thc
iccessartes of life. Our debts arc great-oiir
.csourccs few, aud taxes heavy, almost be?
yond endurance. Wc wish we could give a
irightcr coloring to thc picture, but thc trutli
s not always, indeed not generali}', pleasant.
Ye would tell our people he patient-trust.,
md hope, and all will come right.
We have, unquestionably, much also to be
hankful for, and at a solemn season like thc
>rcscnt it hecomcth all of us to humble cur?
sives before thc great Searcher of hearts, and
.eturn thanks to thc Giver of all good for His
;racc and manifold mercies toward us.
A happy New Year wc wish to all our rend?
es ; and may it be our privilege to address
hem many times more, and theirs lo read, for
ong years to come, our annual lucubra!ious.
