State Items.
The editor of thc Lancaster Ledger, -who recently
made a : visit to our city, thus speaks of tho Mills
House, where he says it was his good fortune to
sojourn;
The present proprietor. Mr. Joseph Purcell, well
sustains the ancient reputation ot the establish?
ment. The entertainment which tho houso affords
is of a character both splendid and substantial,
presenting all the comforts and elegancies and
delicacies which the most fastidious could desire.
The servants are as polite and attentive as when
slaves. .and the place lias all tho characteristics of
a well-ordered establishment. Visitors to the city,
whether cn business or pleasure, will find it well
deserving of their patronage.
NEW.SECOND-CLASS CAE.-Wo ara pleased to no?
tice the addition of a handsome second-class car
to the Cheraw and Darlington Railroad. This car
is from the hand of Mr. A. M. Corrie, Superinten?
dent of the N. E. Railroad shop. It is not the
first notice we have taken of his work, but we
must say that this car adds new lustre to his ge?
nus. Our colored friends now upon that Road eau
see that tho company has been studying their
comfort, notwithstanding the report to the con?
trary.-Florence Gazelle.
SLEET.-We experienced quite a heavy fall of
'sleet on Saturday night last. It waa. in thickness,
from one-half to an inch: On Sunday tho limbs
of the trees wero covered over with iee. which, in
a great many instances, broke them off. On Mon?
day the shining of tho sun made thc icicles look
beautifully, and at the same time melted much of
the sleet, making it anything but pleasant for pe?
destrians. Those whowalk in tho streets march
to the tune of slosh, slosh, slosh_Greenville En?
terprise.
HIGH PRICES.-At the sale on Monday last, at
Garhhgton's Mills, part of tho estate of John Gar
Tngtoii, deceased, Colonel G. F. Mcsely, the auc?
tioneer on the occasion, informs us that corn
brought from $1.95 to $2.28 per bushel; mules, $90;
to $170; cows, $10 to $30; sheaf oats, 55 cents per
dozen; cotton seed, 50 to 60 cents per bushel, on a
credit of nine months, note and security, with in?
terest, payable in currency. AU other articles sold

FLORENCE "MARCHING ON."-The recent alarm?
ing fires have convinced the people of Florence of
the necessity of having a fire engine and a well
organized fire company. The preliminary steps
have been taken, and no one acquainted with ac?
tive, enterprising Florence can doubt that the "ma?
chine" will soonbe running along its streets. Fire
engines and insurance agamst fires are new things
our quiet country villages, but they accept the
tuation promptly, showing that they have "a
heart for every fate."-Darlington Southerner.

SWATZE EN ROUTE TO SAVANNAH.-The" MACOU
Messenger says the notorious fellow Swayze, who
caused the arrest of several citizans of Griffin a
little more than a week ago, was himself arrested
last Friday and passed through that place !ast
Saturday night, on his way to Savannah. He is
charged with some very serious offences against
the laws, but as we did not seo a copy of the
charges against him, nor could we learn, satisfac?
torily and definitely what they are, we will not
now undertake to give the substance of them.
CITY POLICE.-This .fine looking body of men, aB
now organized, stands thus: Chief, J. B. Cum?
mings; Captain, E. Johnson; First Lieutenant,
Wm. E. Avantj Second Lieutenant, B. Nance.
The force consists of forty-four men, who were
sworn in yesterday. The rules and regulations
governing the organization have not yet been pro?
mulgated, but . we think they will be strict, and
that every man will be expected to do his whole
duty. The uniform is to be of gray cloth.-Macon
Telegraph.
Curr OF BRUNSWICK.-The Brunswick Courier ia
jubilant over the increasing evidences of improve?
ment in that city. It says: "Passengers are arriv?
ing in every boat for the purpose of making ar?
rangements to make brunswick their home. Sev

es are being repaired. Our mill men are de?
lighted, asit will give them an opportunity of giv?
ing away their slabs, refuse lumber, &c. Hurrah

The same paper notices the death of Colonel
Henry DuBignon, at the advanced age of over
eighty years.
DEATH OF BISHOP STEPHEN ELLIOTT.-It becomes
our mournful duty to announce the sudden death
of the Rt. Rev. Stephen Elliott, Bishop bf Georgia,
which took place at his residence m this city,
shortly after nine o'clock last night, as is supposed,
. from disease of the heart. Bishop Elliott had re
j turned to the city in the evening Central Railroad
train from a visit to the interior of the State, and
vas apparently in his usual health up to the mo
nent of his death, which was without premonition.
At the hour at which we write we are without
further particulars of this melancholy and start?
ing event, the announcement of which will cause
a hrill of sadness not only throughout our com
nunity, but the entire Southern country.
In the death of this distinguished prelate, the
Episcopal Church has lost one of its brightest or?
naient a, and the country one of its most cultivat
e< and brilliant intellects. In due time abler pens
wU record the talents and virtues which adorned
amaracter that has few parallels among the dis

\ ONFLICT RETWEEN CITIZENS AND SOLDIERS._A

exqd, and seemed willing to hack the Sheriff,

juoission to the order. Thia much we learn

% "North Carolina Petroleum and Mining
Jaetny" sire at present sinking but one well-in
?o?agham county. Operatives who have charge
of the work and who have had much experience in
boring for oil in Pennsylvania. a:e sanguine of suc?
cess. It requires capital to develop oil as well as
othi'r interests in tho State, and unfortunately
those who have tho means are not disposed to aid
to a proper extent in driving forward enterprises
which would he profitable to themsolves and of in
calculablo benefit to the State and country at large.
ATTEMPTED ROBBERY AT WELDON -ROBBEB
CAUGHT.-Somo timo ago the warehouse of the
Wilmington and Weldon Railroad at Weldon, was
robbed of goods to the amount o* $1000 to $1500.
Tho watclmia 1 failing to givo a good account of
himself was dismissed, and 1:0 trace could be
found of tho theft. An honest man, Mr. James
Allan, waa appointed watchman. Some time after
a proposition was made to him to become a par;y
to a sec nd robbery. In order to catch the thief
ho consented, and * last Monday night was agreed
upon as tho timo to effect it. Mr. Allan communi?
cated with about twenty citizens of Weldon, whoon
that night distributed themse ves about in the ware?
house and awaited t e arrival of thc thief. He came
at the appointed timo, accompanied by a freed?
man. The watchman told him all was right. He
went to the window where he intended to make
the entrance, hut heard some moving, and told the
watchman ho thought there was somo one in the
warehouse. The watchman affected to recollect
that there were two of the hands in, opened the
door, and told two of tho gentlemen to leave.
Everything becoming still again, the thief at once,
by tho aid of his tools, entered the window, and
the negro followed, and commenced the plunder.
It was not lon before the parties inside seized
both of them, and fo-nd the whit? man to he the
Postmaster at Gaston, a Mr. Tattam, a Northern
man. Thcv were next da v sent to jail at Jackson,
Northampton County, N. C. The above facts were
communicated to thc Petersburg Index.
