NEGRO MOVEMENTS.-We are ad vised that. Gen?
eral Ely. of Freedmen's Bureau fame, is again
amo'sc us, engaged in the philanthropic work of
engaging negroes to go, and providing transporta?
tion for them (for a consideration), to Florida,
with thc view of pcttiug tho eighty-acre land grant
made bv the United States Congress. Our inform?
ant 8 tates that more than five hundred freedmen
have "put down their names to go" from this
city, and others from the adjacent country.
Some of the freedmen look with suspicion upon
all such movements, whenever they emanate from
thc latitude from which Gen. Ely hails. They Lave
had too much Northern assistance already.

FREED?IEN LEAVING ron FLORIDA.-I? we are
not niisinforrncd, there will leave for Florida from
this district, in a few weeks, about eighty families
of colored people. Theso have advanced ten dol?
lars and seventy-?vo cents each, to secure for
themselves laud" and transportation. How much
of that goes to pay for land, and how much for
transportation, we are not able to say.. We hope
these people will suffer no imposition. . There are,
and have boon, so many trickeries towards this
class, that ihe utmost caution is needful "?n their
part.
It will unquestionably bs better for all parties
that somo should go. Like a large herd of cattle
jammed iu a meagre pasture, their feeding pros?
pects are barely tolerable herc. Those who do go
w?l have the best wishes for their success by their

THE MATES -TUE LEGISLATURE.-To-morrow this
body will adjourn. What it has done our readers
know as well PS we do. Thc meagre reports of its
proceedings have themselves been charily dealt
out to us. From some cause, wo know not what,
om- Columbia exchanges rarely reach us in due
time. Our Charleston and Augusta exchanges
como, generally, in the proper time. This speaks
bad for thc mall arrangement between this point
and Conimbia.-Ibid.

To EE HUNO.-In thc caso of the negro boy
Heard, who was indicted and found guilty of mur?
der at the special session of the Superior Court of
this county, held last Auprust, and which was car?
ried to the Supremo Court, by writ of error, the
judgment of tho Court below was affirmed.
Our readers will remember that it was for the
killing of young Mr. Hammond, on Peachtree
street, that the negro Heard was tried. As the
deed was of a most foul character, it is gratifying
to know that the murderer will certainly expiate
his crime on the gallows.

THE FIRE OF TUESDAY NIGHT is supposed to have
boen the work of an incendiary, but how an en?
trance ir to tho storo was effected seems a mys?
tery. Tho building is owned by Messrs. Hender?
son, Chisolm & Co., and was damaged to thc
amount of $2000, which is fully covered by insur?
ance. Injury to their stock light. The stock of
Messrs. Crawford & Dcwit was almost entirety de?
stroyed. Their loss is 830,000: insurance on same
810,000.
Col. McBride had that day occupied one of the
upper rooms, bat wo are pleased to learn that he
was successful in removing his furniture without
serious damage.
Too much praise cannot bo bes ?owed upon oar
fallant and daring firemen; nothing but their de
jrmined and persevering exertions saved the en?
tire bu?ding from destruction.-Atlanta Era.
"COULDN'T COME IT."-A shrewed rascal, hail?
ing from New Orleans, endeavored to obtain lodg?
ing last night at tho American Hotel bv claiming
as his property the trunk of another party. This,
of course, would prevent tho clerk from requiring
payment in advance; but our friend Bryson "smelt
a mico," and proved too sharp for the imposter.
He examined the trunk after his customer had re?
tired, and finding, as he suspected, the name of
some other party painted on it, went up to his
room, and, rousing him out of a sound sleep, TZ
quested him to find other quarters. This man
registers as Frank Layton, and proprietors of
other hotels would do well to look out ?tor the ras?
cal, as other clerks may not prove as sharp and
prompt as the efficient and polite gentleman at
the American.-Ibid.
PASS HIM: BOUND.-A fellow, whose name is
John Leddon, of Macon, Ga., has beat the Plant?
ers' Hotel, in this city, out of his bill. He did not
even say good morning. He is evidently a good
sample of hotel suckers, and is a man of good ex?
terior, red whiskers, light grey eyes, about five
feet eight inches in height, and will weigh about
one hundred and thirty-five pounds. Give him a

MISFORTUNES.-We don't generally bf li eve in ob?
truding private troubles on the attention of the
public, but such a train of misfortunes happened
to tho American Union yesterday that we think
they will hear reciting. The wife of one of the
compositors presented him, just before dinner,
' with a miniature copy of himself, and as such an
event, Uko Christmas, only happens once a year, it
had to be duly celebrated, and in the celebration
two moro of the compositors couldn't tell whether
the weather was wet or dry. A fourth, who had
been ailing for a conplo of days, communicated to
us ihe startling information that he "reckoned ho
had the emall-pox," and thought he had bette: stop
work. We advised him to do so immediately. Two
men and three bovs still stuck to our fortunes, but
in coming back from supper the two men fell in
with the celebrating party, and never made their
appearance, so the boss and the boys had to get
the paper out this morning. This will account for
the shortness of readin . in this issue. We might
have made a formal apology, "circumstances over
which we have no control, etc., but we preferred
telling all the facts in the case, and in future we
'shall control the ''circumstances" by employing
none hut single men, and the celebrations wi?l be
dispensed witn.-Chattanooga (Tenn.) Union.
A NEW PAPEE.-We clip from the local items of
the Bangor (Maine) Wliig and Courter, of Decem?
ber ll, the following interesting paragraph, and
beg that the "parties" will hurry np with then
press and types, as an "anti-slavery paper" in our
city, just at this time, will do an immense deal
of good, and bo sure to pay a large per centage on
the investment. (This is a goak):
We learn from Col. Smith that he has made sale
of tho establishment of the Hancock Journal, to go
South. Lieut.'George Claffin, of Massachusetts,
purchases tho materials, and makes a present of
thom to partios who agree to publish a Religious
and Anti-Slavery paper, at Charleston, S. C.
