pointed as a day of thanksgiving and prayer, both
by the President of tho Unitod States and the City
Fathers, no paper will bo issued fr om this offico
until Saturday morning. It han been always cus?
tomary, heretofore, for the city to celebrate its
own thanksgiving day separate from that of the
Union or of tho State, but wo suppose our wiso
men considered that wo Were too poer at present
to sparo two days from work, and that, therefore,
it was best to lump tho business. Tho principal
food for reflection on thanksgiving day. in a na?
tional point of view, will bo, that, ?bad as things
aro, they might have boon a great de?:l worso; but,
municipally speaking, our cansos for gratitude aro
much more positive. Thc city has been sparod
the visitation of any fatal epidemic at a time when
we had every reason to expect and dread such a
catastrophe, and we aro gradually-and, in somo
respects, rapidly-regaining a prosperous and
peaceful condition. When another year rolls round
vre hope that the merging of the national and the
city thanksgiving days into one may be more ap?
propriate.

at the Charleston Hotel. This is one of the finest
bands in the country, and wo congratulate Messrs.

Hotel, that such fine treats are given very often
to their guests by it.

THE POOR DOOTOBS.-Attention ia directed to the
notice, in another column, of Dr. GEO. S. PELZES,
the City Registrar, giving information of the
whereabouts of the several dispensaries in the
several wards, and also of tho residences of the
physicians who have been elected by Council to at?
tend the sick poor gratuitously. The organization
is foil and complete, provision being- made by the
city for every indigent sick person, black or white.
Those who have homes, and are too sick to go to
the dispensary, will be visited by the physician at
their houses, and the homeless sick find attention
and medical advice at the hospital. Medicines are,

THE NEW YOEK WEEKLY NEWS.-The New York
Weekly News for November 24th is before us,
filled with interesting articles. Mr. BENJAMIN
Woon has resumed the editorship of the paper,
and is determined to make it a journal, in point
of interest and reliability, socond to none in the
country. It contains all tho news of the day; for?
eign correspondence of unusual piquancy; edito?
rials well considered, excellently written, and of
sound Democratic doctrine; letters from various
points in the South; very full markot intelligence,
4c. The New York Wecldy News is just such a
vehicle of intelligence as many of our readers want,
particularly those in tho country who are debarred
the privilege of a daily mail.
Of Mr. WOOD'S record we need say nothing, as
everybody in the South knows how much ho was
made to suffer for his staunch friendship to our

TON AND SAVANNAH RAILROAD. -Afc a meeting of the
Second Lion, First Mortgago Bondholders of the
Charleston aud Savannah Railroad Company, hold
yesterday at 12 M., at the PlantorB and Mechanics'
Bank, the committee previously appointed report?
ed that they had purchased at the public salo on
the 20th inst., from tho Trustees of that Company,
the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, and all its
appurtenances, for tho benefit of thisjclass of Bond?
holders. When, on motion, it was
Resolved, That the bondholders who have signed
the authority by which this committee purchased
the Charleston and Savannah Railroad now organ?
ize themselves into a Company, to bo called the
. Savannah and Charleston Railroad Company, and

one hundred dollars each.

NOVEMBER 29-THE FERST NEWSPAPEB PRINTED
BY STEAM.-Doubtless but few of our readers are
aware that printing newspapers by steam was first,
accomplished so recently as November 29,1814.
The edition of the London Times of that dato was
the first ever printed by a steam press. The hand
press could seldom strike off more than 300 im?
pressions an hour, and it was a tedious and labori?
ous job to get off tho 1000 copies of,which tho daily
issue of the Times at that period consisted. It
was the second Mr. JOHN WALTER, son of the first
and father of tho present proprietor of the Times,
who made this innovation on the old routine of tho
office. He took charge of the paper in 1803, and
ithe very next year he employed one THOMAT MABT
ZEB to construct an automatic press, but for va?
rious reasons tho scheme at that time wont
through, and it was not until 1814 that K?NIG, a
Saxon, succeeded in perfecting a steam press that
was used to print the Times for November 29. The
following account of the event is taken from a
rare biography of the three WALTEBS:
