whereabouts of the several dispensaries in the
several warda, and also of tho reaidencos of the
physicians who bavo been elected by Council to at
tend the sick poor gratuitously. The organization
is full and completo, provision being mado by the
city for every indigent Bick poison, black or white.
Thoae who have homes, and aro too aick to go to
tho diBponsary, will be visited by the physician at
thoir houses, and the homeless Bick find attention
and medical advice at tho hospital. Medicines aro,
in all cases, given free of charge. This charity ia,
of course, only dosigncd for auch as are unable to
pay a physician to attend thom.

Charleston and Savannah Bailrood Company, held
yesterday at 12 M., at tho Planters and Mechanics'
Bank, the committeo previously appointed report
ed that they had purchased at tbo public aale on
the 20th inst., from the Trustees of that Company,
tho Charleston and Savannah Railroad, and all its
appurtenances, for tho bonofltof tint-'class of Bond
holders. When, on motion, it was

the authority by which thiB committeo purchased
the Charleston and Savannah Railroad now organ
izo themselves into a Company, to bo culled the
Savannah and Charleston Railroad Company, and
that the capital stock of aaid Company bo one mil
lion of dollars, divided into ton thousand shares of
one hundred dollars each.
Besolved, That we procood to the election of a
Board of Trustoos for tho Savannah and Charles
ton Railroad Company, now organized, to consist

aware that printing newspapers by steam wbb firat
accomplish ed so recently aa November 29,1814.
Tho edition of tbo London Times of that dato was
the first over printed by a steam presa. The hand
proas could eoldom strike off moro than 800 im
pressions an hour, and it was a tedious and labori
ous Job to get off tho 4000 copies of_which tho daily
issue of tho Time? at that period -.---'atf _. It
waa the second Mr. ?Tohn Walte*., son of the first
and fathor of the present proprietor of the Times,
who mado this innovation on the old routino of tho
office. He took oharge of the paper in 1803, and
tho very next year ho employed ono Thovat Mabt
zbb to construct an automatic proas, but for va
rious reasons the soborno at that timo went
through, and it was not until 1814 that K?nig, a
Saxon, eucoeedod in -perfecting a stoam prsBS that
was used to print tho Ttmct tot November 29. Tho
following account of the event is taken from a
rare biography of the three W__T_Bfl*.
Owing to the opposition of the prooemen, K?nig
waa not allowed to try his experiment in tho Timos
office, but tho form was taken to anothor building,
and an r.nnsunlly largo edition successfully print
ed. Tho pressmen liud throntonod dobtructum to
tho inventor and his machino, becauso thoy bc
liovod it would throw them out of omploymont.
As n ruso to keop thom from suspecting that auy
thing unusual wns going on, thoy wore told
to wait for expected nous from tho continent.
It was about six o'clock in tho morning when Mr.
Walter wont into tho prose room mid astonished
its occupants bv telling thom that tho Times was
already printed by stoam; that if thoy attomptod
violouco thcro was a forco ready to suppro-*s it:
but that If thoy woro ponceablo thoir wages shoi?d
bo continued to ovory ono of thom until similar
omploymont could bo found for thuin. Tho prom
ise wa-.,doubtlesr* faithfully performed, and having

Tho Times next morning, of course, had an
oditorial crowing oyoi- the i .suit of thoir enter
prise, and oxplaining lo their readors tho history
end principio of tho solf-ncting printing machino.
A half contury lias rolled by since then, and wc
now liavo steam presses as far suporior to Kohiq's
automaton as that was to tho old hand machino ;
but \int!l wo have a completo automatic typo-scttor,
wo shall never again liavo such a sonsntion in tho
printing business as was created by the first steam
press.
MAYon's Court, Wednesday morning, November
28.-No less than sixtocn wliito men and ono
colored man woro charged with smoking on tho
wharves. All of tho white mon who could bo found
wore fined in sums of from $2 to $3. Tho colored
individual Buffered in the latter amount. Our vigi
lant policomon aro calling tho attention of the
public in au emphatic manner to tho ordinance
against smoking on the wharves, and his Honor
thb Mayor is dotormincd to onforco tho penalties of
the law against nil violators of the same.
An Englishman, ovcrcomo by vinous potations,
had mado his pallet in East Bay, opposito tho
Custom-House, whore ho was waked by tho light
of a star shilling in his eyes. Ho must havo re
cently nrrivod in this country, and was probably
only just about to enter himself at tho Cuatoiu
Uouso, as in hie pocket woro found four English
shillings and cloven half Shillingn, besides $1.50 in
American specie. Ho was charged $5 for Ii?b
accommodations, which waa a very good guess at
the size of his pilo, ho having just $1.50 in green
backs besides the coin already mentioned.
A horned quadruped with a lacteal fountain,
being caught trespassing in White Point Garden,
was fined $1.
A white man and a nogro, rojoicing in the incon
diary name of Guy, were arrested for amusing
themselves with mutual instruction in tho noblo
art of self-dofonco in the portico of tho Postoffico.
His Honor considered tho PoBtoffico too public a
place for such exhibitions, and fined the pugilistic
porformors $10 each.
Two fair-c omplextonod individuals who preferred
whiskey to water, parements to mattresses, and
the sky to bod-curtainB, and who had selected re
pectively Cumberland street and Frasor'a Wharf
for thoir sleeping apartments, were charged $5
each for the indulgence of thoir outre fancies.
Tom, a colored ?pocimen of tho genus homo, who
had drunk whiskey until ho saw stars, and then
taken a horizontal position at the corner of Broad
and State streets to compare notes botweon the
whi.koy and heavenly luminaries, whore ho was
incontinently taken in charge by a third apooiea of
stars, who kindly furnished him with moro private
quarters, for which he waa required to pay the
usual amount of $5 currency.
A quartette of white men being ongagod in a
fisticuff concert in Elliott-street, wero grabbed by
soi no neighboring stars, who did not like Buoh
interference with the music of the spheres. Thoy
