Tho Philadelphia Age says of tho above subject :
There has boen a very largo influx of foreign

THE DISPLAY AT NEW HAVEN, CONN.
New Haven, Novembor 13.-Last night o party

THE DISPLAY AT CHICAGO.
Chicaoo, November 13.-Tho meteoric shower at
Chicago, partially promised for lost night, woa a
tod disappointment, both to the curious and to tho
astronomers, as tho motcora woro ecarcely moro
numerous or brilliant than may bo seen on any
clear night in the fall of tho yoar. From olovou to
ono o'clock about ono hundred and fifty woro
counted by Profoaaor Saflord, of tho Chicago Ob
servatory. Thoy oppoarod to como mostly from
tho constellation Loo, in the east, and to movo in
nearly o horizontal direction, though mony foil
obliquely and perpendicularly, mid tho direction
varied as tho constellation changed its position.
Ono very brilliant motoor, about 1 o'clock, started
from near tho constellation CaiiBsiprod, and, de
scribing a parabolic curve, oxtendod entirely acroas
the eastern boa vena, finally sinking below tho hori
zon. Tho first part of tho night was clear and cool,
and very favor._-.lo for investigation, but shortly
lifter 1 o'clock a haze came un, nnd tho beavens
woro aoon donsoly o.oraproau, so that no further
exhibition could bo witnoased.
I'hrcc to Pour O'clock.-Two httlo meteors ap
peared at three o'clock in the i.oulhwcst, and both
went southward from tho position of tho co ._>tolla
tion Ursa Major. Immediately nftorwurds another
shooting star appcarod fifteen degrcos north of
the zenith. Thoro woro not moro than thrco or
four of tho whole number that wera not south of
that point. The noxt meteor appeared in tho west,
forty degrees below tho Konitn, and the succeed
ing ono in tho east, near tho horizon; mid there
waa a very little ono in the southwest, thirty de
grees above tho horizon. There waa au interval
of one or two minutes in their flight. The timo
thcBO motoora remained in sight averaged ono
fourth to ono-balf a second. They woro mostly
bolow or between the constollations th . Greater
Dog and tho Creator Boar. Three-fourths of thom
touched tho southwestern section of tbo Milky

MF.TF.Ons IN NEW YOBK.
New Yobk, Novombor 13.-A party "watching
tho heaven.." last night, from o pr?valo observato

showers: *
Eleven to Three O'clock.-At about 11 o'clock last
night the first ono of tho shooting stars woa no
ticed at a point noor this city, where somo poins
woro token to seo tho number which carno. Only
two or threo morn were viaiblo till a quarter boforo
threo this morning. Thon within a period of ton
minutes threo bright shooting stars appeared at
tho south at an oltitudo of about forty-five dogrcc?
from tbo horizon. Tho first went eastward, tho
second westward, and the third southward, or
directly towards tho horizon. Tho bright lino of
tho path covered about fiftcon dogrcos.
Four lo Five O'clock.-Aftor four o'clock tho
shooting atari appeared in groat numbors. Thoy
went in all directions, but usually southward, and
more than half woro first aoon in tho aoulhwost.
Tho only flight approaching a "shower." which
was seen in tho course of the night, was at four
o'clock and ton minute.!. Then Chico stars darted
downward in quick succession. Ono waa excood
ingly brilliant and oft a trail which could bo soon
for somo timo after it disappeared. In the com ho
of ton minutes thoro woro eovon flights. Thon
they carno at longer intervals, and for about twen
ty minuto i not ouo shooting star was seen. Boforo
fivo o'clock thoro wcro eight or ten, howovcr. '.?/hey
woro noarly all small. Ono of them, which was
vory far distant, acoincd lil.o a long, thin lino of
fight, and was viaiblo for Rovoral aoconds.
five to Six O'clock.-From fivo to six o'clock
thoro woro moro motcora than iu any of tho othor
p?riode, though in couBoquonco, partly of the early
dawn, none woro distinguished after forty minutes
to six o'clock. At about half-past fivo o'clock a
largo meteor, as bright and Hashing as a rocket,
panned from tho constellation Orion towards tho
northwest. Ila train was as luminous as tho
brightest flame.
DRU-LIANT DISPLAY AT TBOT.
Tboy, N. Y., Novombor 14-2 A. M_At half-past
aoven o'clock last ovening a moteor of mont bril
liant appoaronco, and about tho size of a twonty
pound shot, carno directly from the constollation
of Orion, and travelled wostwardly until its dis
appearance. Its flight was accompanied by cor
rum. itionti that abaolutoly glittered aloug its on
tiro length. At olovoa o'olook anothor brilliant
moteor of tho first magnitude shot from tho boll
of Orion, traversing about . forty-fivo dogrooa of
tho horizon, accompanied with nebulous light,
similar to that which come tory bo dio s exhibit. It
como from the east, and took a southerly direc
tion, leaving a long trail.
During tho ovening, up to half-past twolvo o'clock,
noven of those motcora, mostly from the constella
tion Orion, passed in a southerly direction. Those
wo io all of tua firnt magnitude, and traversed south
with long trails. At a quarter to ono o'clock o vc ry
largo and brilliant moteor, accompanied with o
phoapboroscout light, appeared at the end of tho
bioklo, and instantly panned north, marked with
all tho colors of the rainbow.

In rogard to colors wo are far boland the an

faded, except tho green. Tho Tyrian purplo of
tbo outombed city of Pompeii is as frosh to-day
as it was threo thousand years ago. Somo o tho
stucco painted ages boforo the Christian era,
broken up and mixed, reverted to its original
lustre. And yet wo pity tbo ignorance of the dark
skinned children of tho ancient Egypt, The colors
upon tho walls of Nero's festal vault mo as fresh
as if painted yesterday. So ia tho check of tho
Egyptian prince who was contemporaneous with
Solomon, and Cloopatra, at whoso foot Cnosar laid
tho richea of bia empire
And in regard to metals. Tho edges of tbo
statues of tbo obelisks of Egypt, aud of tbo an

yoatorday. And tbo stones still remain bo closely
fitted that their scams, laid with mortar, cannot
bo penetrated with ti?o odgo of a pen-knifo. And
their mirinee is excoodingly liard. at) hard thal
whon the French artists engraved two lines upo:i
tho obelisk brought from Egypt, thoy dostroyod,
in Ibu tedious task, many of tho bost tools which
can bo manufactured. And yot tho so anciont monu
ments aro traced all ovor with inscriptions plaood
upon them in oldon timos. This, with other fa.'ia
ol a striking character, prove that thev woro far
moro skilled in metala than wo are. Quito recently
it is recorded that whon au American vossol waB

Fiction is very old; Scott had his countorpnrl t?ro

who bivi no limo to wait for tho j)ropor forging of
his weapon."but soizod it red hot, tobo forward,
but found to his surpriso that tho cool air bad
temporod his iron into an excellent Btool weapon.
Tho tempering of stool, therefore, which was now

Ventilation is doomed a modern rt. But this is
not tho faot, for apertures, unquostionablv made

to ventilate our nouses.
