THE WEEKLY NEWS.- The weekly editfon of Tina
NBWS will bo regularly issued overy Sunday
morning, and will contain all tho latest telegraphic j
news, the latest ship and commercial news, as J
well as a gteat variety of iutorosting reading mat?
ter. A# persons in tho city desiring it left at their j

'THE LEGISLATURE. -We are requested by tho
President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the
House of Representatives, to state that the Houses
over which they respectively preside will assemble
and be called to order at 7 P. M., on Monday, the {
/ 26th inst.
No hour being named by the Constitution, this .
bas boon selected, as it ia believed to be the most
convenient and agreeable to the members of both |
brandies of the General Assembly.
Charleston, November 12, 1866. o'
TEE RAIN.-On Sunday night we were visited by
a very heavy fall of rain, which has completely
squelched the dust for a few days. It came, how?
ever, rather mal apropos for the convenience of
some people. Several of the' oburches were ie
opened that night, after a long intermission, and
were all well attended; but the down-coming rain,
we fear, distracted the attention of many fair
hearers. East Bay now presents the appearance
?f a vast quagmire, and it requires comet man?
agement to cross that Slough of Despond without
being mired. The vehicles that always throng
that street have stirred up the mud to the consis?
tency of mush, and the stones that aro piled so
temptingly on either side make us sigh for the
. days of pavements, and pray most fervently that
the coming of the new one may be hastened.
o ^
CURBSTONES.-We aro pleasod to notice the
improvement of the curbing now being perfected
on East Bay. Neglect and ill usage had caused
many of the stones to give way, while others had
entirely lost their former proportions. By direc?
tion of the, city authorities workmenv are now
engaged in restoring these stones to an upright
position, and ia other respects improving the
condition of the sidewalk. This will afford a great
protection to tho pavements, as in some places
they were partially submerged by every heavy rain.
As an initiative step we can look forward with
some degree of hope to the time when not only the
streets but the sidewalks of this busy thoroughfare
, will be again paved. It is a consummation most
devoutly to be wished for.
MELANCHOLY OCCURRENCE,-Mr. EMANUEL, an
old and highly esteemed merchant of Marion C.
H., fell from the pla'tform of tho baok car on tho j
Northeastern Railroad last Saturday night. Thc
train was in motion, and the shock of the fall in?
jured him so severely (some of his ribs being
* broken, besides other internal injuries'received)
that he died soon after. He WBB on his way homo
at the timo, having just returned from a visit to
tlda city.
QUICK PASSAGE.-The fine Al new steamship Sea ,
Guli, DUTTON Commander, arrived in Baltimore on |
Sunday in fifty-five hours. The steamers of Messrs.
COURTENAY & TRENHOLM'S new Uno aro all swift I
vessels, making average voyages, inside of sixty |
hours, which is a great advantage to shippers.
? Q
' PROVOST COURT.-This Court still exorcises jurie-1
diction over tho Sea Islands, and as many planters, j
resident of the city, aro interested in its proceed?
ings, we append tho time and place of its sit?
tings : On Saturday, the 17th, it will bo held at Mr.
JABEZ WESCOAT'S house, on Edisto ; on tho 27th
at Rockville, Wadmalaw Island, and on the 3d De?
cember at Secessionville. Maj. D. T. COBBIN, who ?
long had charge of the Court in this city, is the
presiding officer.
