Tho Southern households, where tho females of
a family have taken entirely upon tiiomselvos the
burdon of domo9tic duty, are marked by a degree
of neatness and order uttorly impossible under tho
oareloss supervision and labor of nogro sorvants.
Every ono knows of their surprising dust-holes for
storing away filth of every description, and their
maxim -that "dirt never kills,-' which they carry
religiously into practice. The moro superintend?
ence of their caroloss labors was a greater drudg?
ery than to do it oneself.
Whero there is noalth, a moderate degree of
energy and good will, and several in a family, the
work is no heavy binden upon any ono of them.
It is only surprising, in a short time, what can bo
done and done woll, of the labor which six or
seven servants, in eternal bustle and confusion,
were striving to accomplish in the twelve hoare.
In these days of labor-saving inventions work has
been reduced as light as work can well be. A good
kitchen and cooking stove will hardly injure the
hands or complexi?n of *&o fairest bello, whose
heaviest task work had hitherto been to master
the difficulties of an opera of Meyerbior, or to paint
a landscape lrom Poussh*. The new washing
machine leaves little to be desired in the way of
lightening heaviest of all domestic drudgery;
a division of labor there oonverts a toil, if not into
? pleasure, at least into a very boorabie necessity
and an ultimate benefit. , "
We bedeve that in a year the amount or money
saved, and of comfort gained, if every woman in a
Southern "household should resolutely set her face
1 toward the discharge of duties which will be ulti
mately forced upon her, would promote the happi
ness, energy, and usefulness of the whole land. A
- spirit of independence would take the place of that
inertness which has hitherto paralyzed all our ef?
forts, and we would become a stronger and better
people. She might, perhaps, find less time for the
requirements of fashion, nut quito as muoh for
the management of her family, the cultivation of
her mind, and a practice of all those social virtues
and accomplishments which conduce so much to
the happiness of a fireside.

The Final Fate of the Universe.

If two bodies were placed in space without any
force acting upon each other than thoir own gravi?
ty, they would immodiately start toward each
other, and would rush together. -The Bun and
planets, which constitute the stellar system, to
which our solar system belongs, are prevented
from ninning together into one mass by their revo?
lutions about each other. Tho revolutions of the
planets around our sun, and of tho satellites about
their primaries, have boen ascertained, with that
"wonderful precision which is tho just prido of as?
tronomical science, and astronomers are now en
: gaged in tho sublime prob em of unrovoiling tho
revolutions of the countless suns that make up our
stellar Bystem. Alroady the oluBtor of the Pleiados
ia indicated ns tho proximate locality of the centre
around which our sun, with his attendant planets,
is sweeping his vast orbit; and it is suggested that
it is probably the common centre of tho orbits of
all the suns of our stellar system.
If the foroo of gravity extends across tho incon?
ceivable spaces which separate the several stellar
systems of the universe, those systems must rush
together unless they are held apart by revolutions
around each other.
If light were an emanation, as held by Newton,
the spaoes between the solid bodies of the universe
might bo absolutely empty; and in that case, the
revelations of the bodies around each other might
go on forever. On the other hand, if light is a vi
ration in a subtle fluid, the fluid must obstruct
the motions of bodies revolving in it, and they
must finally como together in ono mass. The ex?
periment so ingeniously devised by Arago, and
j carried out with such honorable regard for tho
. fame of its designer by Messrs. Fouoault, Fizeau
and Bereque, to determine whothor there is a dif?
ference in the velocity of light in its pas sa go
through air and water, has demonstrated that
light is ? vibration. It follows from this that, as
far as light extends, space'is filled with a material
fluid which resists the motion of bodies revolving
in it, and bodies within this space must gradually
- wind thoir way inward, and ultimately como to?
gether into ono mass.
The moon must be drawing very Blowly nearer
and nearer the earth, and tho two bodies, in tho
' far distant future, wal como tqgethor. The solid
crust of the oar th will be' broken up by tho shook,
an immonso quantity of heat will bo generated by
the destruction of the moon's Uiotion, and the two
bodies will ruso, together into one molten globe.
AB tho new and enlarged earth is cooled upon its
surface, a second series of - geological deposits will
be constituted, accompanied, perhaps, by strange
and inconceivable, forms of animal and vegetable
life.
At tho samo lime, the earth is winding its way
inward toward the sun, and must ultimately fall
an inconsiderable pebble, into the vast glowing
mass. The samo fate awaits all tho planets, and
pur solar system must one day bo but a singlo
globe. When this globe is cooled to tho right
temperature, it may be covered with a multitudo of
inhabitants, and astronomers may rho who will
watch its revolutions among tho associated suns of
our stellar system. If then' knowledge and intel?
lect aro equal lo tho soionce of our astronomers,
they will foresee the ultimate coming togobher of
all those suns into one common globo. And not
this only, l'or they will predict the final coming to?
gether of all tho stellar systems of tho visible uni?
verso icto ono mass of matter.
When this mass is first collected, it will bo in?
tensely hot from the dostruction ot' motion in tho
gradually cooled. During tho cooling thore will
e tho samo pl ty and mutual intorohango of boat,
light, electricity, magnetism, and other impondera?
ble forcos that in now upon this oarth. As tho
cooling proceeds tho action of theso forces will di?
minish; whon 1)77 dogroas is roachod, light will
cease and darkness will lill tho universo. As each
vibration of boat leaves tho material mass, it will
expand outward at tho rate of 102 OOO miles per
second in all directions, in tho form of a swift
swelling hollow globo. Whon tho tomporaturo ol'
absolute cold ia roached (-493-2 dogreos), tho last
vibration of heat will loavo tho mass of matter and
will expand outward through all iufiuity of space
and time.
Supposing, howovor, tho ethereal fluid which
fills tho visible portion ol' tho uuivorso is limited in
extent, so that .tho last vibration of heat will reach
its boundaries and coaso, what thou bocomcs of
tho force of tho universe and of tho doctrine of tho
conservation of force.

On Tuesday night, about ll o'clock, a bouse oc
cupiod by Iko Andorson, a freedman, took fire, and
was entirely consumed.
On Wednesday night, phortly after the Columbus
train had pasred. a iko broke out in tho telegraph

press o??eo adjoimng,was burnt down. Tho building
occupied as an ?frico by tho National, was theprop
erty of our townsman, Mr. J. L. Evington, and

THE CLEANER AND CONDENSER ATTACHMENT
Is an ENTIRELY NEW FEATURE, and a great ac?
quisition to tho Gin proper. It is very simple ia con?
struction and operation, and requires no appreciable force
to drive it It serves to separate all the vast amount of
fine dust and sand from the ginned cotton, which, by the
ordinary process, would be deposited with it and be
packed in bales for market. The Condenser also prevents
the possibility of ming the ginning buildings, even if the
Gin itself could generate firo (which this Gm cannot do).
It occupies but littlo space, and may be operated in al?
most any building, however small, and whon desirable
may be used in the open field. It is entirely portable,
and, with the Gin, forms A COMPLETE GINNING ES?
TABLISHMENT OF ITSELF, whioh can be moved from
plantation to plantation.
The saving in tho erection of biiildings such as are re?
quired for those Gins and Condensers ovor tho cost of
those roquirod for other gins, will far excoed the entire
