early hour, and will contain, beside the usual
amount .of interesting, commercial matter, tables
showing the commerce of the port for the past
month.
LAH MAN'S LOAD.-'Why do the drivers of tho
scavenger carts so often ?verload them ? 'What is
the ase of piling inore offal on a cart than it w?l
hold, and then spilling it out all along tho route?
Yesterday carelessness of this kind was productive
Of a most offensive nuisance in a respectable part,
Of Meeting street, and the inhabitants complained
loudly of the imposition. Let our policemen be on
the lookjtrat for the cartera who carry a lazy man's
load and report them. Thia way of doing their
duty is worse than not doing it at au, and deserves
the imposition of a heavjrponalty, which would re?
dound to the good of the policemen and the city.
FrBE.-An alarm of fire was sounded at 4 A. M.
yesterday morning, and smoke was f ?eon issuing
from the roof of the house at the northwest corner
of Spring and St. Philip streets, ownod by Mr. B.
3U HATCHER. The first alarm was given by the
Marion House, hut as thKt engfeo -iraa soon on tho
spot, fortunately the flames were extinguished with
but a trifling loss. The fire was altogether acci?
dental and waa supposed to have originated from a
defective flue or a spark.
Thia portion of the city is composed altogether
of wooden buildings, and had the fire not have been
discovered so soon, the cons?quences would have
been very disastrous.
THE BATTEBY,-It is enough to make a Charles
tonian feel sad to walk on tho Battery in its pres?
ent dilapidated condition. It looks like the garden
Of a bankrupt or a sluggard, neglected and gone to
waste. The grass grows green* over its walks, and
there are holes in it that the mounds would not
suffice to fill. Many people complain that its
being frequented by colored people renders it no
longer a pleasant resort, and that it is not worth
while to spend any more money on it; but if we are
to adopt that doctrine we will have no public
walks, gardens, parks, nor anything at all of that
sort, for the freedmen can go anywhere.
THE NEW POSTOEFIOE.-The selection of a posi?
tion for the poatoffioe was most judicious. The
building now used presents a neat and business?
like appearance, and affords an abundance of room
for carrying on the affairs of the postoffice, besides
leaving a sufficiently large place for the audience
to stand. The night box is on the loft band side of
the main entrance, and there is a separate box for
drop letters. Special care has been taken to
accommodate the ladies, and a separate entrance
is prepared for them, with a private stairs at the
aide of the building. The whole arrangement re?
flects great credit on the Postmaster, and if the
mails and delivery thereof were as woll arranged as
the postoffice, there would no longer be any
ground of complaint in that direction.
GOOD DISPATCH.-The steamship Kingfisher,
Captain HABBIS, aailod yesterday for Baltimore,
with 600 bales cotton and considerable quantities
of other merchandize. The Kingfisher is tho first
vessel of the now Baltimore Line. Sho arrived here
on Sunday last, with a largo cargo, and although
the woather, part of tho time Binco, has boen unfa?
vorable, Messrs. COURTENAY & TEENHOLM, hor
?gents, succeeded in getting a full cargo for her.
A part of this cotton is bound through to Liver?
pool, MessrB.^CotraTENAY & TBENHOLM giving
through bills of lading to that point, to be re-ship?
ped by the Baltimore and Livorpool steamship
line.

PAEADE OP A COLOBED FIRE COMPANY.-Yester?
day afternoon the Btreets were temporarily block?
aded by a denso crowd of freod peoplo-men,
women, boys, girls and babies-that accompanied
a colored fire company which was parading. When
one could get a glimpse of the company through
the throng of darkies, whioh was very rare, it was
seen to bo tho Niagara. It mustered about thirty
men, nicely dressed m a uniform of bluo shirts
turned down with red, black pants, and tho usual
fireman's hat. Thoy had a fine banner Of blue
silk, on which was printed, in gilt letters, the
name of the company, the date of its organization,
and then-motto-"Ever Beady." A colored band
was in attendance, which accounts for the crowd.
The company behaved with the greatest propriety,
and oven the accompanying crowd made no un
seemly noise.
RETUBNINO REFUGEES.-It- is not as frequent a
sight now as it ^'aa thia time last year, but still
you can often seo even now, at the depot of the
South Carolina Railroad, being unloaded from the
trains, the furniture, bedding, ho\_ehoId utensils
and trunks of refugees who are jost returning to
tho city after an absence of threo, four, or even
five years. Examine these remnants of property,
and you can eoe at a glance what they once were
and what they now are. The history of removals
and of hard usage is written indelibly and unmis?
takably upon them in scratches, bruises, and
breakage. The history of the furniture is the his?
tory of the family. They, too, are dilapidated.
They are older. TJioy are no longer whole.1 An
old member has gone to rest in his appointed
time, or the sword has cut off the gallant son in
tho bloom of youth, or a daughter hos succumbed
to unwonted hardships. Still the remnant of the
family brings the remnant of the property back to
Charleston, to tho'old city, to "the much loved
home. They are here once more, and tho horrors
of refugee life are for a moment forgotten. The
trading of furniture, clothes, and jewelry, at one
fourth their value, to hard-fisted old farmers for
corn at two or three prices, is like a troubled
dream. Tho church Bpires, the long streets, the
shop windows, the moving panorama of vehioles
and pedestrians, tho rattling of wheels? the boat?
ing of hammers, the cries of fishermen, in short,
all the familiar sights and BOituds of city lifo, seem
so natural, sd" exactly the same as they did years
ago, that they seem for a moment never to have
been away. But city people can neyer entirely for?
get the miseries of a forced life in the backwoods,
and we believe implicitly that to whisper the word
up-country in the ear of a sleeping e:_-refugee
would give him the nightmare.
MAYOB'B COUBT.-Ono of the Green Islanders
having a fondness for the juico, took a drop too
much and performed several fantastic manoeuvres in
Market-street, to the edification of an appreciative
audience. According to recent regulations, a pub
lio dance costs Something, and many was bagged
by a stray policeman. She asserted in piteous
tonos that it was not her fault, as the last tasto
made her sing and frolic, and besides she had four
children home dependent on her. Justice could
not be hoodwinked in this way, and MAB? was
charged $5 as the fruit of her transgression.
An ugly African with an ironical countenance,
went into the hardware business and stole a quan?
tity of old iron from the dredging machine at one
of the wharves. His case was referrod to a magis?
trate. * j'
A darkey, ambitious of preferment, ondoavored
to force his way on Adger's wharf contrary to reg?
ulations, and was fined $5 for the effort.
As the Circus is now coming equestrian perform?
ances are all the vogue, and a drayman, inspired
with lofty and inspiring thoughts, mad? tho side?
walk, near tho Artesian Well, his course But, like
love, it did not run smooth, as he was arrested in
his mad career by a star, and carried to the judge's
stand, where a fino of $5 was awarded as the result
of his performance. ,
Elliott street is such, a classic locality that it is
seldom anything good turns up there. In the pre?
sent instance one of its denizens, inflamed by light?
ning whiskey, commenced whooping and yelling in
a terrible manner. The guardians of the night were
alarmed, and smothered the songster in a cell. His
notes wore so bad, and tho whole entertainment
such a failure, that ho had to pay $10 for his first
lesson. The price was high and money scarce,-so
he was jugged.
One of the old habitnos- of the Guard House, and'
who has been there BO often that she is considered
a regular boarder, was caught again^tm a heavy
drunk. Rosa had nothing to say; language was in?
capable of expressing her feelings, and she hung
her head in silence $10 was sternly read out as
her punishment, and she droopingly departed,
looking like the Last Rose of Summer.
NEW FIRM.-We invite attention to tho card of
Messrs. W. Y. LEITCH and R. S. BBUNS, who have
formed a copartnership in business; Mr. LE?TOH
is well known to the public as lately tho Surveyor
of this port, who resigned his position because he
could not take the ironclad teat oath. Mr. BRUNS
is favorably known as having been the head of
tho house of BBUNS & BEE. Both gentlemen,
therefore, are too well known to the public to re?
quire further notice from tho DAILY NEWS.
SAVANNAH STEAMERS.-Attention is dirooted to
tho advertisement of Mosers. FERGUSON & HOLMES,
announcing tho opening of a new line of steamers
between Charleston and Savannah.
