We understand that an accident happened on
the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad, last
night, near Sumter, S O., by which tho mail train
for this place was thrown off the trade. We havo
not heard what damage was done, nor whether
any person .was injured by the accident.

BIGAMY.-We are informed, by a letter from a
reliable gentleman in Robeson Ouunty, of tho par?
ticulars of a recent villainous outrage. It ap?
pears that Mr. Harvey, of Riohmond, Va., r. rail?
road contractor, worked on the Piedmont Road
some months ago-having in his employment one
John T. Price, of Buckingham Oountv, Va., as a
blacksmith. Price became acquainted with Mis*
Fannv Whitemore, a respectable young lady of j
Bookingham County, and married her last March,
while thus engaged on tho railroad, boon after
Mr. Harvey moved bis business and hands to tho
Wilmington, Charlotto aud Rutherford Railroad,
in Richmond Countv, where Price and his newly
married wife lived tintil a few days ago, when it
transpired that Price has a wife hvmg m Buck?
ingham Couutv, Va., or elsewhere. Upon this
being publiclv* known, Prieo absconded and hw
whereabouts'is unknown. The young lady thus
deceived aud injured is intelligent, amiable, and
possessed of excellent character. It is greatly to
be hoped that the villain may be arrested and
brought to punishment.
Let our young women of all classos of society
take warning. Many similar occurrences, within
the past two years especially, admonish them of
the danger of forming matrimonial alliances with
strangers of whom they know ani inquire noth?

ANOTHER SHOOTING AFFAIR.-The community
was startled yesterday by the roport that a white
man, formerly belonging to Mississippi, named
M. D. Powell, h?d shot and killed a negro, An?
thony Holt, ou tho .plantation of Mr. Nathaniel
Whittaker, three miles southwest of the city. On
inquiry, we find that tho wounded man-for ho
was not dead last night, though in a critical con?
dition-had been forbidden the premises, autl,
coming there in the absence of the proprietor,
was ordered off by Mr. P. Report has it that tho
darkey becamo very insolent, when the young
man mentioned drew a pistol and shot him through
the body. One rumor i* that throe balls took
effect, but this requires to be confirmed. Ordors
for the arrest of tue white man were issued at
once, but the bird has not been caught.

We are really gratified to learn that the direc?
tora of the western railroad, at their meeting in
Morganton, on Thursday, reinstated Col. S.im.
MoD. Tate, their former able and efficient presi?
dent. He is ono of the most efficient railroaders
in the South.-ibid.
HIGHWAY ROBBERY.- We learn that an investi?
gation of a oase of highway robbery was held be?
fore Justice Taylor, on Wednesday iaat. Wo were
not present at the investigation, but the facts of
the case, as wo have since learned them, are as
follows :
About two months and a half ago, a freedman
residing ou the Sound, while on his way to his
home from the city, was attacked by two other
freedmen, near Camp Whiting, who evidently be?
longed to a gang, with thoir rendezvous near tho
scene of the transaction, and ono nf them present?
ing a pistol to his head demanded the delivery of
bis money and other possessions..
The freedman attacked oompliod with tho de?
mand, and delivered to his assailants $15 cur?
rency, and tho articlos he had purchased while in |
the city. He was then allowed to proceed on his
way, but had made but very little progress) when
he was fired at and had a portion of his coat shot
away. ,
Search was afterwards made for the highway?
men, but all attempts to discover them were fruit?
less, until a few days since, when one of the party
was arrested, and au examination entered into.
This negro gave his name as Augustus Williams,
and was recognized as ono of the highwaymen by
the victim of their assault.
His identity being clearly established, he was
committed to jail, to await hiH trial at the next
term of the (Superior Court.- Wilmington Journal.
Report has it that the murderer of John A.
Cut chin has been detected and arrested. The
rumor is probably false.
At Halifax it was thought an effort would bo 1
made to rescue Dick Thompson, the horse thief,
from j H il. Is this Raleigh's Dick, who Jeft here
some time ago rather suddenly? He was arrested
in . Brunswick county, Va., having in bis posses?
sion a horse stolen from the children ot Mr. Wm.
Boseman. Thompson was working as a painter
for Mr. Drumgold, with whom he had ougaged |
pasturage for the horse. Having worked for this
gentleman for some timo previous to the commis?
sion of Hie theft, and conducted himself in an irre?
proachable manner, entire confidonce was plaoed j
m his statements. The thief was brought to !
Weldon oh Saturday last by Messrs. B. W. Spill
man and H. P. Phillips, and was lodged in the ;
county jail on Sunday.
MATTE?18 IN AND ABOUT FAYETTEVILLE.-The HOW
bridge that spans the Cape Fear is going up
rapidly, and will, perhaps, be completed by the
middle of October. It ia said to be a fine struc?
ture, and will certainly be a great convenience to
farmers "beyond the river." If it btands as long

amount to only ?365.

the death of tho venerable and distinguished Flag
Officer Lawrence Rousseau, who entered thu na?

when tho navy was in its infancy, and serve? with

the Union broken and fluttered. Yet. notwith?
standing hid youth And manhood had been spent

trod the quarter deck beneath tho star emblazon?

the war of sections commenced and the tocsin of

the waterd of the Mississippi. Being broken down
with ?go and arduous service, after he formed tho

obey tho orders of his legitimate superior and
not seeking the empty bauble reputation.
We had long lo3t sight of this veteran sailor, whose
tottering walk, large fund of practical nautical
knowledge and thorough acquaintance with sea?
manship and naval tactics, excited our svinpatby
and simiulnted us with ambition and enthusiasm,
to^ acquire his knowledge of vessels and nautical
science, to gain by our achievements the fame he
enjoyed aud to be reverenced and rt spected in the
winter ot our life, wtion the storms ol'tho sea
and the clash of battle, were to be encountered
no more, as much ho was by both officers and nun.
