We are indebted to tho (Southern ExpreBB for
late Southern und Wetjtem papers.
The Weather-The hoavy rains that wo havo
enjoyed latterly seem io have dispolled the
cl?nela and havo cooled tho atmosphere considera
bly. July made hr-r conge graciously, retiring in
a porfeot blaze of beauty. In tho morning thoro
was scarcely a speck to stain the aznro heaven.
The glorious orb of day, in pity to our par-boiled
condition, veiled somowhat his fiery splendor.
Shirt collars preserved thsir dignity, in spite of a
long hot walk, and though items were scarce, yet
the stroots woro by no moans empty. Coup d'
solid was not dreamed of, aud reporters and lo
elia walked boldly in the "raging noon" and
feared no evil, fur thoy had borrowod an um
brella.
United States District Coubt.-This Court
was in session yesterday, but no business of much
importance was transacted. An Admiralty case
was called, but further hoariug postponed to some*
future day.
Nsw Concern.-"Wo call attention to the adver
tisement in to-day's paper of Messrs. Macbeth &
Bavenel, Real Estate, Stock Brokers, anti Gouo
ral Commission Merchants and Insurance Agents.
Both aro young mon well known in Charleston,
and aro thoroughly competent to transact buei
neaa. rThey present a ?wet rospeciab?e Hat of
references.
Damno Bobbery.-- A gentleman residing in
Wentworth, near King street, while taking a com
Portable "siesta" yesterday afternoon between the
hours of three and four o'clock, was robbed of a
very valuable gold watch and chain worth about
$300. The thief was a bold and dexterouB adept)
and our friend awoke from the pleasures of dron.ni?
land lo realizo his heavy loss.
Editohiatl, Visit.-We had the pleasure of
seeing in our sanotum last night, Mr. Moose, of
Augusta, the Editor of the Chronicle <t Sentinel.
Mr. M. is loouing line and lioarty, and we caunqt
but congratulate bim upon the prosperity of his
capital paper. Ttio '.'Arontcte & -Sentinel ia really
one of the boat papers in the Southern country,
and evinces, in ita editorial dopnrtmeut, the
genius and spirit of an able and thorough prac
ticed editor.
Theft.-Mr. Schibmeb, Assistant Clerk in tho
Market, and Intipoctor of Weights and Measures,
met with a sovero loss a few days since. Ho lnul
just stepped out of his offiee, leaviug his pocket
book, containing between $200 and $300 and somo
papers, on bis table. Upon his return the pocket
book was minus, and he bas not succeeded in
tracing tho theft to any party. The only portion
who waa Been to pass the oflico was a man with
somo fowls, and it is supposed that, seeing tho
portmonnaie through tho window, he had made
lovo to it and flown away.
Escaped fbom Jaii..-One Guo. W. Quimby, an
ex-officer of the United Statos army, escaped from
jail on the evening of the 80th, by passing the
guards, they supposing him still to be an oflicor.
These escapes have been very frequent lately.
The prisoners appear to be allowed a certain lax
ness that thoy improvo on; thoy exemplify the old
adage admirably, "give them an inch and they
take an oil." In the present instance, it appears
that the prisonor was allowed to walu around the
city with some of the jail officials, and has appar
ently walked off. Such occurrences are disgrace
ful, and their repetition does not add to their
savor.
A New Academy.-It will bo seen from our ad.
vertising colnuins, that tho Bev. Dr. Myers, of
London, will soon open a first-class school in our
city. Tho bigh testimonials which tho Bev. gen
tleman brings, and his well-known oharacter and
attainments, enable us to call the attention of
parents to his institution, with confidence in the
ability of the B?v. gentleman to impart a sound
education. Mr. Myers is a thorough Hebrew
scholar, and accustomed to teach this and other
branches. We would call particular notice to the
book-keeping department. This is & new feature
in a general Behool, and one of tho greatest im
portance.
WS clip tho following from tho Savannah Daily
New* and Herald of Monday last : .?
Bev. Fatheb O'Neiia.-With rtferonce to the
severe illness of this reverend geraioman who was
recently attacked with typhoici fever in Columbus,
Ga., wo olip tho milo wing from tho Sun of Wed
nesday morning last :
Wa were pleased to loam from the attendant
physician, yesterday, that Bev. Father O'Neill,
whoso illnesB we noticed yesterday morning, is
improving, and that ho bids fair to be restored in
a snort time. This, we feel sure, will be gratifying
intelligence to many of his friends.
TbeAmerioanFabmer.-We have received from
the publishers, Messrs. Worthington & Lewis, of
No. 52 Gay-street, Baltimore, the August number
of this monthly magazine of agriculture and hor
ticulture, and are pleased with the amount of in
formatloB which it oontaius for the vegetable and
fruit farmer, the poultry and stook raiser, and all
others who devote their time and attention to
pastoral pursuit?. To show tbe sense of pro
priety whioh actuates the conductors ' of this ex
cellent periodical, wo Clip from it the following ad
vertiaoniont and remarks by the editor :
Sheep Steauno-"I can buy a pair of Cash
more goats, brought from the South by some of
the 'boys,' who 'confiscated- tbem. Can they be
raised pro?taoly? What ?b it safo to pay for
them ?"
The above oxtraot is from a Northern agricultu
ral paper. The English of It is, that a man oall
ing himself a soldier, robbed some one of those
goats, while in the United H taloa service, and is
not ashamed to offer them for 6ftle; while another,
who wishes to turn an honest (?) penny by the
. purchase, calis the thief, endearingly, one of "the
boys," and usob falsely the honest word "conlis
oate," to cover np* tbe msoalitv. A respectable
editor publishes the letter without reproof, and
''. treats the writer with the civility duo to a Chris
tian or a gentleman I
Old Southern Dnoo House_It always affords
na gratification to notioo our old Charleston
merchants ro-eetablishiug thouinolvoa in busi

our city.
By roforonco to our advertising columns to-day,
wo perceive that Messrs. G ?odkioii, Winkmxn .V
Go. liuvo purchased tho Drug Gitabliatiiuont of
Mr. J. A. Moroan, No. 153 ?Mooting street, and
wo learn from thesogeutlemun that tlioy will add
a new foature to t ho business by tho diroct im
portation of drugs, choniioala, .to., from well
known Enropoiiu laboratories. Mr. Wineman,
who is a thoroughly educated druggist and apo

Mayor's CounT, July 31.-_A female, with a de

Pakkmiii's II-patio Bittbuis.-It Is a wise dispensa
tion of rrovi donco that In the samo locality where some
diseases exist, the roots end plants which are certain
remedios for them are often to be found, walting only
for industrious hands, guided by Intelligent heads, to
pluck them from the earth and arrange theni as nature
directs for the benefit of mankind. In our section of
country, where complaints of the livor, dyspepsia and
chills nd fever make Ufo miserable and rack the human
frame, the vegetable cures are abundant, but they have
watted for some iclentlflo f?ind, l.ke tbat of Mr. 1'ank
