Eight years ago tho Peninsula of Italy consisted
of eight aovortifin and indi puiulcut Statos. Tho
union of all those vavioua 8tates under ono power
ful Govcrnmont has boon for years tho favorito
droam of a largo party among tho Italiane, and
tho traditional policy of Mio Houso of Savoy. It
wan in tho hopo of carrying out this scheme that
0ha.bl.E3 Albert, when tho revolution broke out
in Lomb&rdo-Vanetia in 1818, placed himself at
tho head of tho movement and marched with his
army into Lombardy.
Tho hated rulo of tho Austrians in the Peninsu
la Boomed about to bo broken, when two victorios
by Raoetsky over tho Sardinians and inBurgowts
turned tho scale and sootned to threaten tho very
existonco of tho Sardinian monarchy. Charles
Ai.iiKivr was forced to abdicate in favor of his son,
Victor Eman?kl. Tho Austrian hold upon Lom
bardy and Vonico seemod ?xod faster than over.
Meantime, revolution? in tho Papal States, in Na
ples, and elsewhere, wore likowiso put down and
wero followed by sovoro reactionary moasureB.
Victor Emanuel, on tho othor hind, had hoon
securing his position as tho Icador of tho party of
unity, by fostoring liberal institution?, while, at
tho ?amo time, ho had greatly augmented tho
material resources and foreign iniluenco of bis
kingdom, and had comontod an alliance with
Franco, to aid bim in his ultorior designs. Austria
took tho alarm, and urndo preparations for war.
Tho pooplo of Italy believed that tho moment of
national unity and regeneration was at hand; and
there was bittor disappointment when, after the
brilliant campaign of 1859, a penco was arranged
at Villafranca, whereby Sardinia became the pur
chaser of nearly all of Lombardy, except the im
portant fortresses of Posohiora and Mantua, for
tho sum of $12,000,000, whilo the rest of Lombar
dy and the wholo of Venice wero retained by
Austria.
Since that time tho great question in Italy, up
to the present year, haB been tho disposal of Rome.
Tho day has seemod closo at hand when that city,
too, muet be added to the new kingdom of Italy;
but, nnexpoctodly, Austria has boon the first to
loose hor hold upon an unwilling people, and tho
Popo still clings to bis temporal power. The ac
cession of territory whioh Yiotob Eslanuei. has
made, or probably will make, by tho war just
oloaed, comprises the entire Government of Ve
nice, having an area of 9,198 square miles, and a
population of 2,166,000; and tho small remnant of
Lombardy, with a population of perhaps 40,000.
Victor Emanuel, when he came to the throne,
had about 5,000,000 subjeots. He has reignod 17
years, and has now nearly 25,000,000.
Of the Italians in Europe, therefore, we see that
about 25,000,000 owo allegiance to the new king
dom, whilo there are 1,650,000 subjeot to foreign
powers, and 714,000 under the dominion of minor
Italian sovereigns,
GARIBALDI.
Guiseppe Garibaldi, tho bou of an Italian sea
man, was born at Nice, July 4, 1806, and was
brought up to follow his father's calling. From
early youth he manifested that daring and chival
roue spirit which has characterized him through
life, and one of his earliest exploits, performed
whilo a mere boy, was the saving: of a poor woman
from drowning at the risk of bis own life. He
was exiled* in 1834, and wont to Marseilles, whonce
be made voy&geB to various ports. Next wo hoar
of him at Rio Janeiro, when he engaged unsuc
cessfully in mercantile pursuits. The revolution
in Uraguay boou opened to him a more congenial
field of activity. Fitting out a small bark, which
be named the Blazzini, be Bailed for the Republic
with twenty companions, but on the way encoun
tered two launches of tho enemy. An engagement
ensued in which Garibaldi was victorious, though
dangerously wounded. Disembarking on neutral
territory, ho succeeded in joining an expedition
commanded by tbo insurgent loader liento Gov
zales. He married a South American woman of
extraordinary energy and devotion, and accom
panied and aided by her, he served in the forces
of tho Republic until tho coeeation or hostilities.
When Rosae, the Dictator ot Ru?nos Ayros, de
clared war against Uraguay, ho was charged with
the command of tho R. publican fleet. Some
timos, however, ho fought in the ranks of the
Italian Legion ou land, and occasionally com
manded it. Tho Btato or affairs in Italy in 1848 re
called him to his native country, and ho placed
himself at tho disposal of Charles Albert. He
fought with his accustomed gallantry in Lom
burdy until ovorp-iwered by tho AuBtriane, and
then he took command under tho revolutionary
Govornmcnt nf Homo. During the siege of that
city by tho French ho was stationed outaido the
walls with 1200 mon, and, seconded by Avczzana,
defeated a greatly superior forco and took 800
Erisoners. He bcit tho Neapolitans in two
attles, and after tho capturo of tho city resolved,
with his hamlftil of men, to continuo ?hc struggle
in tho opon country. With 4000 mon he set out
for Naples, fimlly, aftor a series of remarka
bly doxtcroiiH muBUvres, reached San Marino,
and thero, with ouly 1800 mon remaining, found
himself hemmed in. II? would have acco.<tod the
amnosty offered him, but tho Austiians wished to
exo?udo from it afow French soldiers, and, rather
than sacrifi?e them, ho resolved, with about half
bin force, to make by nivht another effort to
escape. He succeeded, with about 21)0 men, in
getting aboard some fishiug boats at Cnsenatico,
and niado anil lor Vonice. H?b littlo flcot was
described by tho Austrian squadron in tbo Adri
atic and dispersed. Sonic were captured and
others ran ashoio. Among tho latter was tho
boat containing Garibaldi and his heroic wife
Two daye later, Anna Garibaldi diod. The chief
himself ruado his way across the peninsula from
tho east coast to tho west, and finally reached
Chicavari, in tho Sardinian State. Ho camo to
New York in 1850, and supported himself by work
in? in a candle factory on Staten Island, until he
found.an opportunity of returning to his old
calling of a soaman.
In 1858 ho was invited by tho Sardinian Gov
ernment to form a national legion, which soon be
came celebrated under the oamo of Cacoialori
delle Alpit or Hunters of the Alps. Landing at
Marsala, in B cily, May 12,18C0, Le rallied nomo
of the revolutionists to his standard, captured
Palermo, entered Messina, and by tho end or Julv
was master of all Sicily, with the titlo of Dictator
The King evacuated tho capital, and Garibaldi
made his solemn entrance into Naples on the 8th
of September. In opposition ti the wishes of tho
extreme party, Garibaldi mado over his macnifl
eent conquest to tho King of Sardinia, and ro
tired to hir little farm in the Islaud of Caprero
In August, 18G2, notwithstanding tho decided
hostihtv of Victor Emanuel, ho i mbarked with a
few volunteors for Catania, on his way to Rome.
The Sardinian troops rocoived orders to oppose
bis progresa, and a battle was accordingly foncht
at Aspromonte, where Garibaldi, his Bon Monotti
and his whole command wore taken prisoners'
The ex-Dictator himself was seriously wounded in
tho foot, and for a long timo was threatened with
amputation. In the course of a torn months he
was sot at liborty, and has ninoo rccided chioily at
Caprera. He wus appointed general in the Italian
army, aftor tho annexation or tho Kingdom of the
Two Sicilies. During t?<o present campnign ho
hsR fv>m'n'?ndod the Sixth Corps, consisting of
about 40,000 men.

orders.

folio of war, and took command of the division

against Russia, rocoiving, at the close of tho war,

rendered, the Order of the liath, and the Grand
CrosB of the Legion of Honor. Ho attorwards
served as War Miniator in tbo Ministry of Cavour,
but In 1859 ho resigned that post for activo sor
vico in tbo liuld. Id 18G1 he succeeded Cialdiui
as Commandor-in-Ohiofof the troopBof tho King
of Italy; and in 1801, ho war intrusted with the
formation of a now Cabinet, in which ho hold tho
portfolio of Foroign Affairs. _
