THE CHARLESTON MARKET.
REMARKS,-The European news received during the
week having completely unsettled the public mind has
caused an almost entire suspension of business. It is
' now nearly certain that the German States will become
involved in a war of unknown duration, and which may
In its course draw in the other European powers. This
critical state of affairs, united to financial difficulties m
England, has kept up a demand for gold from this
country to such an extent as to threaten a heavy advance
In the value of most artioleB of trade. Should France
and BuBsla keep out of this embrogllo, we may hope
that its effect on this country will not be lasting; but,
should the whole continent get into the difficulty, its in?
fluence on many branches ol trade may be important.
The German States, we believe, are not large consumera
of cotton, and should the war be kept within their
limits the staple may not be seriously depressed by it
for any length of time, butas long as it continues the
fear of the possible extension of the contest would
probably induce merchants and manufacturers to set
with caution, and lt would in this way have a tendency
to keep down the price of the article. The news by
.eaah European steamer will be looked for with great
anxiety for some time to come by all oleases of readers,
bot particularly by the merchant, whose most impor?
tant interest may be deeply affeoted.
COTTON.-This article throughout the past week bas |
felt very strongly the influence of the unfortunate neve
from ?UL-ope, and transactions in the ?tapio have bean
nearly suspended. On Friday last, before the receipt of I
the nows of the failure of the Paris Conference, Cotton [
was in moderate' demand, but prices favoring buyers,
the sales of that day amounted to about 100 bales, at the j
following quotations: Middling 84 to 86o., Strict Mid?
dling 37 to S8o" Gool Middling 38 to 89o. per lb. On
Saturday the news per City of Pari* waa received, whloh
With the doy being observed as a holiday, put a stop to
irade and there were no sales. On Monday the market
being very unsettled, only 13 bales of Strict Middling
Cotton were sold at 36s. per lb. On Tuesday buyers
?ere only disposed to purohase at a decline, and holders
teing unwilling to give way, no transactions took place.
On Wednesday, orders having in most cases been with?
drawn, the sales were confined to some 60 bales of re?
packed Ct tton at 80 to 82o, per lb. On yesterday the
market was rather easier, with sales of 65 bales of Cet
ton. Strict. Middling bringing 87c and Middling 35o. j?er |
lb., About 10 bales of -common repacks were also dis
yosid of at 27o. per lb.
SKA ISLAND COTTON.-There has been no inquiry for
this olaas of Cotton since our last, and we have no sales j

RIDE.-Receipts continue trifling, and sales confined
ito local consomption, at 12 xe per lb. for common clean
Carolina to 18Xo. per lb. for prime.
NAVAL STORES,-The reoeipts of Rosin during the
week amount to 815 bbls., and 1800 bbls. have been
.Old, part of whloh was previous stock. Prices have
ranged from $7 for the best qualities to $2 per bbl. for
oemmon black Rosin, with an active demand, but prices
generally lower. The receipts of Spirits of Turpentine
have been 262 bbls., of whloh 150 were sold at 75c. ts
77o. per gallon.
HAY.-The reoeipts of the week amount to 1100
bales Eastern, and about 400 bales North Biver, which,
coming to an already overstocked markst, has still
farthe'.' depressed prices. We learn of sales of North
Biver at about (1.16 per hundred, The late arrivals of
prime Eastern is being sold in limited quantities at
$1.40 to $1.50 per hundred. The demand is smaU and
the consumption very limited.
CORN.-There bits been reoeived since our last about
18)000 bushels, all from Baltimore. The market , here
hes gone up with the Baltimore market, and we learn of
salies of 4090 bushals of white Maryland Corn at $1.45
per bushel, weight, bags included. Holders are gene?
rally disposing of white Corn, in lots, at $1.(0 per
bushel, weight, br gs inoluded.
OATS.-We learn of no additional suppliai during the
week, and, with a limited demand, we quote the article
In a jobbing way at 85 to 90o per bushel.
FLOUR.-The reoeipts sinoe our hut have been light,
but we learn of no ohange ia prloes. We quote low
Sliper at $8.60 to $8 75 per bbl., and good Super at
$0 per bbl.
BACON.-The demand continues light, and prices
about the same as last week, say 16)4? to 17c per lb for
prime Shoulders and 19 X to 20o per lb for prime Bibbed
Sides. Hams 25 to 28c per lb.as in quality.
8UGAB AND MOLASSES.-There was sold b.r Messrs.
BNBIIOW k Co. 2800 boxes of Havana Sugar, No, 9 to
12, at'lix to ll)4e per lb. Mr. Jos. H. RISLEY nold at

Molasses, some of direot importation, and we quote
Muscovado Molasses at 65 to 65c per gallon and Clayed
Molasses at 50 to 55c per gallon.
TIMBER AND LUMBER.-The market oontlnues de?
pressed and with an ample supply; we quote Pine Tim?
ber, common, at $6 to $8 per M; good $10 to 14; prime
$16 to $18; raft boards $20 per M; scantling $15 per M;
steam sawed Lumber from $20 to $80 per M, as in
quality.
SALT-Is still lu only limited demand, but holders
are firm at $1.76 to 2 per saok.
FREIGHT.-To Liverpool there is but little offering;
but Xd. per lb. on Upland Cotton is the asking rate. To
New York, by steamer, Xe. per lb. on Upland Gotton,
and 75o. per bbl on Vegetables. By sailing vessel wo
quote Xe per lb. on Upland Cotton. Agents of steam?
ers and Bailing vessels have established a through route
from the interior to New York on Cotton; being at the
rate of $5 per bale by aail, and $6 per bale by steam
EXCHANGE.-In Sterling there is but little doing, and
only the best bills can be sold. It has fluctuated con?
siderably during the week, and we loam of sales from
$6.62 to 7.25 to the pound sterling.
DOMESTIC EXCHANGE. -The Bankers are selling
Sight Oheoks on New York at X premium. They pur?
chase Sight Drafts at X off; 12 to 15 days, X oB; 20 to
?8 days, 1 per oent off; 30 days, IX off; 60 days, 2X off.

Augusta Market.
AUGUSTA, June 20.-COTTON.-The market is quite
unsettled. We hear of sales of a few bales at private
figures. There is not enough doing to warrant quota?
tions.
GOLD.-Brokers are buying at 145 to 160 and selling at
160 to 162. Little doing.
SILVEB.-Brokers are buying at 186. None sold.
Securities are in good demand. '.
Mobile Market.
MOBILE, June 16.-COTTON,-Early in the day we
heard of some orders to buy for Northern account, but
the steamer's news arrived in time to stop operations.
Borne few bal- a of ro-packs changed hands, tutsi prices
which did not transpire. As will be seen by reference
to our dispatchei of yesterday evening, the Liverpool
dates to the 6th report another reverse in the Cotton
market, and a gfneral state of anxiety and depression,
growing out of the threatening aspect of political affairs
in Europe. This news confirms the interpretation
given of the last steamer's news, and was' not
unbooked for. As might bo expected, it has
smothered what little life the market here has had,
and we may look for an almost general suspension of
business in Cotton until more daylight is Been in the
east. The rise in gold may have the effect of causing
a corresponding greenback advance in Cotton, but there
will scarcely be much demand for tue staple until other
markets than the North can be found for lt, The spin?
ners in this ?ountry are pretty well supplied for the
present, and the stock on sale in New York ana other
markets, together with what is already on the way, will
be smple to Bupply their demands for some time to
ccme. Dispatches from there indicate the same state
oi inactivity as here, and while that lasts we can look
for but little inquiry. Prices are nominal here.
MONETARY AND FINANCIAL-Tho transactions of the
day have been very light in all departments.
Domestio Exchange is flat ?cd duU, rates showing a
decline on yesterday's sales. The banks are drawing
very sparingly, and the transactions reported were done
outside at par to % premium.
Gold opened this morning at 145 to 147, at which a
email amount of business was done, but on reoelpt of
the noon dispatch from New York the market became
so wild and unsettled that it is difficult to give an accu?
rate quotation. We will state, however, that holders
generally were making no offers better than 163 to 165,
out no sales were reported at these rates.
Sterling remains nominal, and New Orleans Sight at
par, with but little doing.
Wilmington Market.
WILMINGTON, June 20.-TUBPBKTINE.-Sales of 93
bbls at $4 for new virgin and $3 for yellow dip.
BOSH*-We quote sales of a small lot at $6 25 to 6 75
forpalei.
Conow-Sales of a small lot at 34c for middling.

Baltimore Market.
BALTIMORE, June 18.-Oom?.-The unsteadiness
of the market for gold continues to chook purchasers;
no inquiry, and prices in the absence of transactions
are bnt nominal
FLOUS-Our market is sluggish for common descrip?
tions, but firm for good, though lnaotive; s took light,
and demand mostly for local trade. We report a sale
of 100 bbls Western Extra at $11 25. Oom Heal ls held
still higher; we quote yellow at (5, and white at $5 60
per bbl.
GBAIN,- Wheat is scarce, very little arriving; several
small lots of Southern offered and sold to-day-included
were 100 bushels white at $3 26, and 190 do red at $3.
A prime paroel of Minnesota Spring red was offered
on 'Change, , and $2 66 bid for.it, held at $2 60 per
bushel. Corn-18,200 bushels white snd 4700 bushels
yellow received; demand good and prices further ad?
vanced, with sales of 8 to 10,000 bushels white at $115
to $118; 600 bushels yellow at 98 oents to $101, bulk at
$1 per bushel Oats-Western were offered quite freely,
300 bushels heavy sold at 60 cents; 1000 bushels do at
54 oents per bushel, including bags-no light sold.

MOLASSES.-No sales reported.
PBOVHUOHS-The market was very muoh ezoited early

buyers were numerous and active, but transactions
were few on account of the high prices demanded; later

We report sales of 90 boxes and 8 hhds middies at 18o;
20 hhds bacon sides at 19>? to 20o; 20 do shoulders at
L8% to 18J??, and a small lot of Western keg lard, not
prime, at 21%o per lb. At the close we quote bulk
moulders at 19 to 15%0, as to quality; sides 18%o.
Bacon is held in Jobbing lots at 17o for shoulders, and
10c for sides. Mess pork $44 to $35 per bbl. Western

HONST. MABKET.
The New York Evening Post, of June 18tb, says :
Gold is less active than on Saturday, but the market
3 excited, and the transactions have been at rapidly
wrying rates. Before the opening of the Gold Boom
here were sales at 108% to 169, which was the highest
trice of the morning, the lowest rates being 157%. Coln
s scarce for delivery, and the borrowing rate is % in
?vor of the lenders. The news by the Peruvian has had
1 depressing influence on the price.
The loan market ls extremely easy but inactive. Call
cane are easily obtained on first-class securities at 4 to
I per cent. Discounts are scarcely so active, the rates
ranging from 6% to 8%.
The stock market is dull but Irregular. In responso
to the rise In gold old five-twenties have risen to 103'-"
o 103%; but persons who have bought them for ship
lient find it difficult to sell their bill of exchange. Ball
road shares are quiet except Erie aud Illinois Central,
tor which there is some foreign demand.
Foreign sxohange is heavy in consequence of the
largo supply ot sterling and the small aemand for re?
mittance. The best banking bills are reported to have
lold to-day as low as 108%.
PBODUOH MABKET.
MONDAY, June 18.- FLOOB, Ac-The market for
Wei tern and State Flour is fairly active and 15 to 80 cte
per bbl better. The BSIOB are 10,000 bbls at $ J 90 to 7 50
for superfine State; $7 95 to 9 for extra State; $9 10 to
10 tar fancy State; $8 35 to 8 00 for the low grades of
Western extra; $9 26 to 10 25 for shipping Ohio; $10 30
to 14 for trade and family brands, and $14 25 to 17 for
St. Louis extras.
Canadian Flour is more active and 15 to 25 cts better.
Sales of 600 bbls at $0 60 to 10 25 for the low grades of
extra, and $10 40 to 13 60 for trade and family extras.
Southern Flour ls fairly aotive and 10 to 20 ote better.
Bali? of 700 bbls at $10 60 to 1210 for mixed to good su?
perfine country Baltimore, &e" and $12 25 to 17 for trade

Bye Flour is better and in demand. Sales of 600 bbls

GBAIN-The wheat market to-day has been very ex?
cite'!, and prices are decidedly better. The sales are
28,000 bus els at $2 40 for No 2 MUwaukee Club, $2 42%
to $2 45 for No 1 do, and cholee do, to arrive, at $2 69.
Barley ls qs'let and unchanged.
Barley malt is lnaotive and nominal.
Oas are 3 to 4o better and quite active. Iho sales
are 68,000 bushels new Western at 66 to 61c, and 81o
tor Canadian.
Bye is in good demand and firmer, The sales are
14,000 bushelB at $1 10 for Wisconsin, and $1 86 for
Canadian.
Oom is decidedly better, but has been very unsettled
during the day, dosing buoyant. The sales are 192,000
bushels unsound at 92 to 94c; new Western mixed at 95
to 97c, afloat, closing at our outside figures.
PBOVIBIONS-The pork market has been active and ex?
cited, but very irregular, opening at our extreme figure,
rapidly falling off to inside rates, but subsequently re?
acting and. dosing uith much firmness at 33 to $33 12%
for mess. The sales, cash and regular, are 12,000 bbls
at 32 75 to $33 75 for m OBS; 26 50 to $26 75 for prime,
and 28 to $28 60 for prime mess.
Beef is without change to noto. 8ales of 150 bbl* at
12 to $14 for old plain mess; 16 to $21 for now do; 14 to
$17 for old extra do, and 20 to $24 for now do.
Tierce boef and b^of hams are nominal.
Cut meats are hold at higher flguroH, but tho bllsinOSS
ts light, and we bear o( only smaU lots hams ati8>?c.
Bacon i* quiet bat firm.
Lard is dull and prices to some extent nominal. Sales
of 150 kettle rendered at 22%c, and 150 do city, 21% to
22c.
ASHES.-The market is firm and fairly active at $7 75
@8 for Pots, and $16@16 for Pearls.
COFF EE -We have no sales to report, and prices are
nominal.
COTTON.-The market continues quiet at 40@42c for
middlings.
HAY.-The market is firm and quite active at from 55
@60o for shipping, and 65@75c for retail lots.
HOPS-are firm and in good demand for home con?
sumption. We quote at from 20@60 and 70c, as to
growth and quality.
LIME -Rockland is firm and in good demand at $1 60
for common and $2 10 for lump.
MOLASSES-Is firm and iii fair demand.
OILS. -Fish oils are dull but steady at $1 35 to 1 40 for
crude whale and ti 50 for crude sperm. Lard oil is
firm at $1 60 to 2 05 for No. 2, No. 1 and prime.
PETROLEUM-IS dull but steady at 27c for crude, 42
to 42 %o for refined in bond, and 56 to 60c for do free.
RICE-Is dull and prices are nominal.
SUOAB.-Baw sugars are very firmly held; holders
generally ask ll to 11X? for fair to good refi ring. Re?
fined are higher and firm at 17c forharda, 16 X to 16c for
soft white, and 14 to iso for do yellows.
TALLOW -Prices are firmer, but buyers hold off, and
we hear of only about 25,000 lbs, the market cloBing at
12% to 13c for western and oity.
WHISKEY.-The market la more active and firmer.
Sales of 500 bbls in bond at 8Cc.
COTTON,-J. P. MOBTON & Co. of New York, in their
circular of the 16th instant for Europe, says:
It is now generally conceded that the eupplv in the
Interior is exhausted. The ou?rent exports are drawing
