COLUMBIA JOCKEY CLUB.-The Columbia Oarolinian.ot
yesterday has the following:
At an extra meeting of the subscribers to tho Purs eB
for Trotting and Running Horses at Columbia, A. M.
HUNT was called to the chair, aud briefly stated the ob?
ject of the meeting.
It was resolved that a Club be formed, to bo sty 1 od the
"Oongaree Jockey Club," and thit an election be en?
tered into immediately for the proper officers, whero
upon the following named gentlemen were unanimous?
ly elected :
President.-Gol. V7m. M. Myers.
Vice Presidents.-?hos. Taylor, Wm. Shiver, A. M.
Hunt, J. D. Green, R. O. Anderson, Esq., C. M. Howell,
Esq., Maj. Jno. Meighan.
Secretary.-L. T. Levin.
Treaeurer.-H. E. Scott.
It was also resolved, that all Trotting Races should be
governed by the rules of the "Long Island Jockey
Club," and all Bunning Races by rules of "Augusta
Jockey Club."
It was further resolved, that this Club adopt the Rules
and R'gnlations of the "Augusta Jockey Club" for its
government, and that tho Races be advertised to com?
mence on the 4th day of July, and to continue four
days.
The meeting then adjourned until Friday, 14th inst.,
at which time the members will .come prepared to de?
cide upon the number and amount of each purse, dis?
tance, etc. J. L. LUMSDEN,
Secretary pro tem.
The above organization having been perfected, we
look for a speedy development of a sport, the prepa?
ration for which involves ai much science and skill as
any profession in the world. In the hands of gentle?
men, thepleasmres of the turf constitute the chief fea?
tures of attraction in all our large cities; and we know
not why, in the present instance, with such names at
the head of a club as appears above, Columbia may
not have a race course and stad of horses second to
none in the South.
HANDSOME PRESENT TO A MASONIC LODGE.-The Co?
lumbia Phoenix, of yesterday, says : "We have been
showx^a beautiful set of jewelB, gavels, working tools,
and a handsomely bound Bible, donations from several
brethren of the mystio tie, in Louisville, Ky., to their
unfortunate brother Masons of Richland Lodge, No. 89,
Such acts of brotherly love, from the people of one sec?
tion of the country to those of another, tend to cement
the hearts of men." '
OBANGEDUBG, S. C.-The decree of the Central Direc?
tory to the contrary notwithstanding, we are fast recon?
structing. Tho Times of yesterday says that the work
Of building new stores still goes on bravely.
Carpenters find plenty of occupation, and our town
can show more new houses and greater improvements
than any place of its size and population in the State.
The various lots belonging to the Beach Estate, spoken
of in our last issue, as selling for such good prices,
were bought principally for the purpose of eroding
stores.
Dr. E. 3. Oliveros holds one upon whioh he built some
time past a commodious dwelling and store-and upon
the others we hear of fine buildings soon to be erected
by Oornelsen, Kramer A Co,, Mr. Kirk Robinson, Mr.
J. A. Hamilton, and perhaps others. The fine store of
Messrs. G. D. Eeltt St Co., now nearly completad, and
the dwelling house of Sheriff Dukes, are great improve?
ments to RuSBol-atreet.

ANCIENT FINE ABTB,-To the Editor of the New York
Herald: Respecting the relics of porcelain ware found
in the late exhumations at Herculaneum, which have
been forwarded to the Society of Antiquities lniLondon,
whereof your correspondent says the bottle resembling
DRAKE'S Plantation Bitters was undoubtedly placed
among the ruins by the agent of Dr. DRAKE, we desire
to state that he is incorrect in every respect. If a bot?
tle was found there bearing our lettering, the language
of tho Ancient Romans was different from the accepted
literature of that day. Onr Agent has other business
than this In Eurong and has not been in Italy at all.
No doubt Americans carry Plantation Bitters to Rome;
but trying to impose upon a society of Antiquarians in
this way seems quite useless, and we do not appreciate
the joke. It is unnecessary for us to spend money in
Europe while we are unable to supply the demand for
theso celebrated Bitters here. Respectfully,

Keep Disease at Bay.
Invalids, broken down in health and spirits by Chro?
nic Dyspepsia, or suffering from the terrible exhaustion
which follows tho attacks of acute disease, the testimo?
ny of thousands who have been raised as by a miracle
from a similar state of prostration, by HOSTETTEE'S
STOMACH BITTERS, is asure guarantee that by the
samo means you too may be strengthened and restored,
But to those who stand in peril of epidemics, to aU
who, by reason of exposure, privations, and unconge?
nial climate or unhoalthy pursuits, may at any moment
be stricken down, this paragragh is moBt particularly
and emphatically addressed. You, who are thus situa?
ted, are proffered an absolute safeguard against the
danger that menances you. Tone and regulate the sys?
tem with this harmless medicinal Stimulant and Alte?
rative, and you will be forearmed against the maladies
whose seeds float around you in the air unseen. HOS
TETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS are not only a stand?
ard Tonic and Alterative throughout the United States,
but they are accredited by the certificates of the most
distinguished citizens of the Union, to the people of aU
other lands. In Canada, Australia, and the West Indies,
they are gradually taking the place of all other stomach?
ics, whether native or foreign, and as surely as truth ls
progressive and demonstration overthrows doubt, they
will eventually supersede every other Inyigorant and
Restorative now employed in medicinal practice.
