consequence of tho alleged discovery, tho majority of

A verdict of ifll,6lfl 07 wa? rondered Monday in the
Conrtof Oommon Pleas, Now York, against tho Camdon
and Amboy Railroad Company, ina suit brought by
a Mr. LAUB and others to recover the valuo of cotton
received by defendants as common carriers, and burned
at their wharf in that city before it was-dellvored to the
consignees. .

was burned on May 12th, and whict? waa hoavily insur
ed, was, with bia wife, after a lengthy investigation at
the demand of the insurance com oanlcs by the Aro in
spector, committed for argon. Twice previously Mr,

There Is a project on foot among the Israelites of the
United States to build a. magnificent college, for the
purpose of educating the young men professing that
faith in all the scientific and classical branches, but par
ticularly in Jewish theology. Hitherto tho Jows have
had to send their children designed for the ministry to
the continent for education.
A heavy storm passed over the country in the vicinity
of Griffin, Ga., on Tuesday last, doing great injury to
the growing crops. On one plantation all the buildings
vere blown down, and all the horses killed. On an
other, two negroes were killed, and tho owner seriously
injured. The wheat crops along tho Uno of the tornado
were completely prostrated and rained.
A rencontre occurred In Thomasvillo, Ga., on Thurs
day last, between THOMAS J. LIOHTFOOT and O. O. RICH
ARDSON, daring which pistola and knives were freely
used and both parties severely, if hot mortally, wound
ed. KICHAUDPON, a few months' since, waa'agent of the
Freedmen's Bureau at that place, but was admitted to
the bar by Judge HANBELL at the court at Valdosta on
Monday last.
A report has reached St Joseph, Mo., from the Plains,
to the effect that the Indians latoly convened at Ash
Hollow have quarreled among themselves. Tomo
hundred of the young braves refused to yield to the
older members of the tribe, who favorod going to Lara
mlo to the great peaoe treaty, and painted for the war
path. Whereupon the wise heads surrounded the
youngsters, killed their horse?, burned thoir tents, and
. : killed one or two of the ringleaders, after which peace
?reigned among the gentle savages.
A Blinman official paperstatts that the Rabbinical Jews
in Russia possess six hundred and fifteen synagogues
and two thousand four hundred and thlrty-flvo orato
rios, to whioh 5100 religions officials aro attached. The

monts, havo fourteen synagogues and forty-six religious
officials. Of 6,336,001) souls, composing the population
of Poland, the Jews are abovo 700,000, II per cent, on

In the United States District Court .at Montgomery,
on Monday, an indictment for treason was road against
Judge WM. G. JONXS. The Indictment sot forth that the
accused did, In December, I860, in connection with JEF
re_ON DAVIS, JUDAH P. BENJAMIN, and divers othora,
conepir?) to obstruct tho execution of the law? of the
United States, and attempt to ovorthrow eaid Govern
ment by inciting to and organizing armprt t<SS!***ndt
and insurrection, ko. Other indictments were also
found for conspiracy, and a trae bill was also found
against G. W. GAYLE, T. 8. OABBWEIX and J. A. Wpaxs,
for complicity in the assassination of A. LINCOLN .

tho mannor in which tliOBO "facts" woro obtained.
Our papers have, from timo to timo, publiBhod
reporta of tho catechetical exorcises held under
tho auspices of this Committee. Gen. LEE, EX
Vico-Prosidont STEPHENS, Judge SUAUKEY, and
other distinguished Confederate leadors, woro put
to tho question, and houos ly answered according
to truth and tho dictatOBof thoir consionco. Thoir
testimony, however, hadno woight; it was not tho
articlo wantod. The Cotnmittoo poraoverod, and
in courso of timo woro completely, triumphantly
successful, in procuring tho vory "facta" they
woro in search of, and from a distinguished South
ern ox-Confedorato. Whit could bo fairor on their
part, than to draw the logical inference from such
testimony?
But who waa this distinguished ox-Confedorato?
And what are tho "facts" furnished by him be
fore this Inquisition? Tho following extract from
I a rccont Cincinnati papor will answer tboBO ques
tions:
Among tho most important ovidence taken by
the Congressional Reconstruction Committee is
that of Oapt. T. Mackey. The witnoBa ?B a nativo
of CharloBton, S. 0., and a resident of Shreveport,
La. Ho was Chiof Ett?iuoor of the rebol frans
Mississippi Department during the war, and sur
rendered on tho 27th of May, 18G5, being at the
timo a member of Qon. Price s stuff. A month or
two later ho was appointed Provost Marshal of
Lowan, and the adjoining counties of ToxaB. He
entered energetically upon bia duties, and seems
to have acted in all respects as a loyal officer
should. Ho says ho found tho gonoral sentiment
of the peoplo to bo notonly opposed to tho Govern
ment of the United States, but bittorly antagonis
tic to all who declared thomselvcs as willing to act
in good faith toward the Government-tho good
faith to tho Government, in the judgment of tho
people at largo in Texas, meauB, ba?4 faith to tho
community.
Now, boforo wo proceed any further wi th the
Captain's testimony, it may uot bo unprofitable to
examine into bia competency as a witness in the
oaae. The internal ovidonoo contained in tho
foregoing paragraph is in itself very damaging to
tho character and credibility of the witness. Ho
surrendered as a member of Gen. PKICE'S staff,
May 27,1865, and "a month or two lator was ap
pointed Provost Marshal of Lowan, and the ad-?
joiuing countieB of Texas;" (under Federal author
ity, be it understood). This is tho first and only
case on record, as far as our knowledge extends,
of a Confederate officer being elevated to the dig
nities|of aPederal command; and that.too,within a
month or two of his surrender and parole 1 . Capt.
MACKEY evidently fouud it m easy to change his
allegiance, and swallow all the necessary oaths, as
to doff his woathor-boiten grey, and don the now
and shining bitte. Hippy he with conscience so
convoniont.
But wo never before knew that this species of
"easy" conscience formed a commendable qualifi
cation in the character of a witnohs. Trntb, wo
boliovo, is supposed to be the cardinal requisite
for a proper discharge of this fonction. But what
regard for truth can bo imputed to him, who, by
bia words and actions, givos the Ho to-day to what
he said and did only four weeks ago? Wo, of
courso, have no reference, to his surrender, nor to
his takiug the oath of allegience, and acting up to
all its requirements. But why Provost Marshal?
Another TITOS OATES, he nt once nota out with
his nowly ncquirod pone to arrest parties who, he
alleges, had made themselves specially obnoxious
to the Union cause during the war.
Now, let us euppoeo tho "facts" given by Oapt.
MACKEY all in accordance with truth; that resist
ance waB made to his authority; that he did find
the people inimical to the loyal cause [be it borne
iu mind, he ia the representative of the United
States]; can we not very readily account for it all,
on the most ordinary principles of human nature?
The gallant Captain was known to all these people
as a i stinguished Confodorato officer. True, be
was not Chief Engineer of tho Trans-MisBissippi,
as he states; but that is no matter. With the most
brazen-faced shameleesness he changes his coat,
and sots out to instituto an inquisition into tho
disloyal aots of thoso peoplo-which acts, if snob
there were, came to his kuowledge by reason of
bia late association with them.
What must we style Captain MACKEY? A double
traitor? Did he enter the Confederate cause
against hie convictions, and then by his rapid
conversion to the United States Provost Marshal's
omeo forswear his lato sentiments? Shall we call
him a Bpy? Or ?B he simply to bo rogardod in. the
cbaractor of State's evidence? All these deduc
tions arfffrom the in tur util ?vidence contained in
his testimony. But, fortunately, wo are not re
stricted to these. The previous character of a
wituoss is an important factor as regards the cre
dibility of his testimony ; and as Captain MACKEY
is blazoned abroadas a native of Charleston, S. C,
it is reasonable to suppoao that his early con tem
poraries know something of his antecedents.

TROUBLES IN THE WEST.
Wo loam from our Western exohanges that, in
a recent tour made by Geo. BLAIR through the
Btato of Missouri, for the purpose of presenting
the President's policy to the poop lo, he was con
tinually insulted, and his audiences attacked and
disturbed by rowdies, set On thereto., and counte
nanced by the Radical offioials, who now control
that State. In several instances fights occurred,
knives and firearms were freely used, and lives
woro lost, The Radical plugs were the attacking
party in every instance, and if tho slightest resist
ance was offsrod to thoir violence, the party re
sisting was arrosted, while the roai infractora or
the peaco were allowed to go scot free.
Straws show which way tho wind blows, and
thoso fact? indicaic strongly that the Radicals are
determined to risk4 a civil war rather than part
with the power obtained by the Inauguration of a
civil war. Wo are still further convinood of this
determination on their part by the information
that the Sheriffs of Missouri are gradually collect
ing around them a standing posse, who are kopt
constantly paid, and are composed ot the worst
characters of the community. For what purpose
such an unnsnal measure, save to enable the
powers that be to hold their places against the
will of tho respectable masses of the population?
