Two daya ago, in this city, died the celebrated "Father
Prout," whose i lullt nanni was Francis Mahony, one of
the most charming writers of our timo, nutt of our
tonguo. Bo was boru ia Cork County, and dlod at 62
yoarB of agc. AB a litterateur ho is best known by the
.Prout Papers,' a eor.CB of learned and witty jeux d'esprit
published originally in Frazer's Magazine. I kuo? not
whothor the Indefatigable Dr. McKenzie baa over edited
and published tho "Prout Papers" in America, as ho
has done by several other similar performances. If
not, thoy will desorvo this attention at his hands Poor
Father Mahony bad the misfortune, many years ago, to
quarrel with hie Church, and nineo that time has ue'vor
keon permitted to administer the sacraments.
AB a political writer ho bos always been distinguished
by a vchemont hatred of tho Popo in his temporal capa
city; and many thought he had broken off from his
Holiness In his spiritual capacity as well; <yet ou bia
death bed he received tho usual consolations of religion

wafer on his tongue. For some years ho has resided in

ed for tho tasto of his Tory British public by abuBlng

the religion In which ho was brought up, and the land
Where his mother bnro him, were all to bo snoered at for
that cultivated British publio for which ho wrote, and
he sneered accordingly.

ing of gratitude for many an hour of genuine laughtor
