Extraordinary Elopement.
The New York Xews of Friday, says that a mer?
chant of that place, named BO?BGANAXI, recently
eloped with the grand-daughter of his wife, and
gives the following account of the circumstances
of the case. It says :
The history of the case affords examples of
trusting love, cold-blooded treachery and heart?
less fraud, each as are not often presented. Ef?
forts are being made, we understand, to shield
the guilty man, or, at least, to hide his sin from
the world at large. Bat as it will be morally im?
possible, from the Boci?l standing of one of the
parties, to conceal the matter for any length of
time, and as alike the interests of society and
sympathy for an estimable lady, foully and irre?
parably wronged, demand publicity, we will pro?
ceed in this placo to givo a full and truthful ac?
count of the affair: by this means preventing tho
issuing o' ex parte or garbled reports.
To present the matter clearly, it will be neces?
sary to give a brief resume of the previous career
6 -?f the principal parties concerned.
Those who have studied, with any degree of
care, the previous history of our country, will
have no difficulty in recalling to their recollection
the ?ame of Mrs. General Eaton. This lady was, !
in her day, one of the most fascinating women of
Washington; she was active, intelligent; witty,
full of life and animation, and was posaosacd of a
very fair share of personal attraction. By her
social graces she commanded the attention of
many of thc leaders of fashion in Washington,
and, as all ntr -ativea inform us, won thc especial
favor of the.great General and President Jackson
himself. In short, sho was at one time "the bright
particular star" of the American Capital.
From our republican court she was transferred
to adorn the Court of Madrid, to which place
General Eaton was accredited Minister. She
passed some time both in London and Paris, and
well sustained the credit of the American name.
After General Eaton's, death his widow was left
the possessor of an independent fortune, well in?
vested. She lived in excellent style, and was
noted alike for her good taste, liberality and
charity. In course of time she assumed the
guardianship of ber two grandchildren, a young
. girl and boy, and made ample provision for their
futuro life, settling apon each of them a sufficient

spectable connection in his own country, but was
certainly very poor-and for a considerable space
of time could"procure no employment. Forced to
be idle, and yet forced to live, his prospects were
very disheartening. Bat in his rambles he
chanced to meet one of oar leading musicians (Dod
worth, ve believe-though for this we will not
certainly vouch), who recommended him to adopt
the profession of a dancing master, for which he
vas apparently well qualified. The Italian acted
upon thia friendly hint thus given, and met with
an encouraging degree of success.
Among bia dancing pupils were a boy and a
girl-the grandson and granddaughter of Mrs.
General Eaton. Ana it is from this point; that, in
an evil hoar, the career of the Italian professor cf
dancing became intimately connected with the fate
of the Eaton family.

rather handsome, though not prepossessing to a

semble more of the dancing master or barber than
of the gentleman-bat such as he was the grand?
children referred to, the boy and the girl, con?
ceived a decided hking for him, and even went so
far one day as to request their grandmother to
allow bim to visit at har house.
At first Mrs. Eaton waa indignant at the idea of
this social innovation, bat, as Providence or ill
look ordained, finally consented. With all the
enroling of bis character he soon ascertained the
exact state of Mrs. K's finances: he also discov?
ered, rh at ia fact vas patent to an, her amiability
and soft-bear tcdnesr.. Of these latter qualities he
smoothly took advantage, and before many months
had paeBed it vas announced in fashionable circled
that the widow of General Eaton and Bourganani,
the dancing master, vere to be married.
The rumor "took the tova" by surprise. But
the fact of the wedding shortly after exoited the
town still more. Yes; the dancing master, vho
had seemed to be the intimate companion of the
? young girl, his early friend, nov married her
guardian, and Mrs. Eaton became Madam Bour?
ganani.
His adopted grand-daaghter was quiet, rather
pleasing, naturally open-hearted young girl, easily
influenced and warmly attached to the Italian,
whoso intimate relationship to her gave him
every facility to increase this ' attachment. To
the ruin of this young creature the former danc?
ing master cooly and calmly proceeded, step by
step, with a caution and a stratagem worthy of
Machiavelli.
Last week Bourganani proceeded to Washing?
ton, vhere he remained several days. Meanwhile
thc young grand-daughter was observed to bo
ver j restless, and evidently in ill-health. Gossip
began td assert itself. Dame Rumor employed a
few of be? thousand tongues; but on Monday
night last the Italian returned to New York.
On Tuesday the grand-daughter left the board
ag bouse on the plea of visiting her sister, and
returned no more. Tuesday night tho poor vife
waited "all through-the weary hours in vain" for
fte husband whom she was destined never more
to see. On Wednesday afternoon there appeared
in tho papers, and also in the morning papers of
yesterday, a line among the locals announcing the
departure for Europe (among others) of Mr. and
Mrs. A. Bourganani.
On Wednesday last his wife receivod a letter |
coolly written and carefully worded, announcing
his departure to Europe-containing a few com
mpn;pUoe apologies for bis baseness-and inform?
ing.her (her the loving woman to whom he owed
bis all, owed the very coat on his base back, and
the very money with which he paid his passage in
tho steamer, her who had given up the world's
golden God for him), that if "she kept quiet," he
having converted all her property into cash and
taken it with him, would allow her the magnifi?
cent allowance of twenty dollars a week.
The false husband and unnatural relative, with
his unhappy victim, have "gone to Europe."

at least the reprobation of' society should, alike
here and abroad, be directed on the head of the
villain, while the heartfelt and most oractica! sym?
pathy of the community, both here and in Wash?

bad; corn in the lowlands, from constant rains,
have died oat; cotton, also, from tho same cause.
A. large portion, say three-fourths of the uplands,
have poor stands of cotton, from defeotive seed
and constant rains; the plant boing tender and
feeble dies the first hot day. Marjy, have planted
over, perhaps half the replanted land is ?D corn.
The prospect for bad corn crops, present high
price ot breadatufis and an almost certainty of
live cente per pound tax on cotton, havo induced
the chango.
