WASHINGTON, Hay 22.-The following dispatches
from Commodore Rodgers were received to-day at
the Navy Department :

Cf the city on the SO th of April. Admiral Pears m
-anchored our men-of-war out of gunshot of the
fortifications of Callao. Merchant vessels bad
some days before taken up positions out of the
way of hostile operations. Ic was thought that
the attack would commence ou the 1st of May,
When the time expired given to neutrals for remo
Val; but on the 2d of .May, about 10 o'clock A. M.,
the Spanish fleet got Tinder way.
Some time was spent in dressing their lines,
and about ll o'clock the squadron moved in two
directions to attack the de fences of Callao. The
first division under Admiral NQH* Z, consisting of
the iron-clad Numancia, of 7000 tons burden, with
the frigates Bianca and. Resolution, moved al og
the San ??renzp Island io attack the baitorien on
the south side of Callao, while tue frigates "Villa
do Madrid, Berenguela and.Almanza, passing in
front of the national and merchant vessels an?
chored in the bay, steamed at first slowly toward
the Peruvian batteries on the north aide of the
eity. As these vessels approached they accele?
rated their speed and ran swiftly into position.
At 12| o'clock, the first gun waa fired, I thought,
from the Numancia, quickly followed by two from
a battery op the south side. The Spanish fleet
-carried about 240 guns, mostly S2-ponn<:ers. The
Numancia was armed with 68-pounders, as was'
nb j .'be three-gun corvette Viocedory, which waa
h-dd :n reserve to tow if necessary, and also, I
presume, to cover the transports.
The Peruvian batteries nam be red in the aggre
SteM? gana, .five of them 450-pounders (Blake?
rs), and four Anna rong guns, SOO-pounder J,
mounted on the top of iron t?rrete. The rest
were 32-ponndere. Sand bags were extensively
used in making the battery, to which were added
brick masonry1 and some pf Adobe. The firing
soon became of a warm charge ter. Ahoat lo
o'clock the Villa de Madrid set ber jib and try?
sails and ran out of the fight. She made signals,
and waa taken in to? by the Yinoudora, with steam
escaping abundantly belo*. She was soon follow?
ed by th?Bevenjudi, listed* over to one side, and
with-smoke pouring from her ports. Just before
she retired a puff of black dust had shot oat et
ber water line on the side away from the battery.

erate irun clads, covered with Tai road iron, and
having a 68-pouuder at each end. The monitor
waa struck ten times, bot received no damage. I
do not know how the other fared. There were
several emull men-of-war, bat. their artillery.was
too light to be u jed, and they were.secured in,the
Mole.

MOBILE, May 33 -Corio?-There baa been a good
deiuead throughout the day for the better qualities,

lower gradea are entirely neglected. Notwithstanding

mands, abd price- hare continued arm and hard. The
stock on sale is very poor, and good selections hard to

The former have been rather neglected, but the latter
