war tn Germany, and im gradual extension to all Eu?
rope, bot the great decline in Cotton and other causes
have not been without their influence. The lart news
by the Cuba has prubebly given ns a view of some of
the worst features of the ease commercially, and if the
British Government has authorized the Bank to sus?
pend the action of the charter, which ls. probably to
permit a temporary suspension of specie payment, the
-stringency in money mattera there will cease in s vary
.hort period. The extent to which this crisis may act
on this country is yet to be determined. In the South
matters have been so prostrate for a long time that they
cannot well be worse, and the great mass of the people
here will pass through it without suffering to any great
extent by its action.
COTTON".-The demand for the staple has been good,
and the market baa had an advancing tendency most ot
the week. The trade has also developed a now feature,
which is the continued advance of the staple here In
the face of a heavy deonne in England The British
market baa been so long in the habit of dictating the
price of the staple, that Te naturally look for a fall here
. when the market there g es down. But the matter has
baan reversed on tl la ooea s on, and vu hope for its con?
tinu in ce, for the benefit of the cotton grower of the
South, whoso in wes has long demanded a competitor
to the i*"gM?>? cotton buyer. The firmness of the New
York market and the demand from Norihern manufac?

great extent, regulated the price.

been light, comprising 493 bbls. Rosin, all gradea One
lot of Extra Pale sold at flO; Pale, $9; No. 1, $7.60; No.

Receipts of Spirits Turpentine 135 bbls., part of which,
early In the week. In New York bbls., sold at 88c.; th?
balance 82a per gallon, in good packages. Of Crude 260
bola were received, and Virgie brought $5; Yellow Dip
$3-all pet bbl, ot 280 Ipa No sales of Tar.
HAY.-The arrivals of the week consist of about 700
bales Eastern and 600 bales North River. The former
was sold to arrive some time since, and part of the lat?
ter has been disposed of at $1.30 per hundred. The
mar kat continues d nil, with a good stock and a limited
?lemana. We quote North River $1.30 to $1.40 ; East?
ern, nominal.
CORN.-The crude continues to arrive freely, and
the receipts of the week are over 30,000 bushels, mostly
from Baltimore. Wo learn of the following sales: 4300
bushels of White Maryland, in bull, at $1.10 por bushel,
weight; 2000 bushels a hite Maryland at $1.22 to $1.23
per bushel, weight, bags included; 2100 bushels White,
bags inclu led, at $1 20, measure; 1119 bushels White at
$1.21, weight, baga included; 1000 bushels Yellow at
$1.06 per bushel, measure, without bags. Prices are
firm, with a good demand.
OATS_The market ls fully supplied, and the demand
mr this grain is limites. The asking price in large quan?
tities is 60 to 65c. per bushel, and in.a retail way about
70c per bushel.
FLOOR -The receipts continue light, with a limited
demand. We learn of sales of Super Flour at $9 per

BACON.-The ?dranos in Northern markets has put
ap the views of holders here, and we report a still fur- ]

Liverpool coarse, snd tl 60 for a third to a quarter fine.
Dealers are supplying the demand for the interior at

The New York World, Financial article of Mondi
22d inst says :
Throughout the day there was a deep undercurrent
anxiety in financial circles, in regard to the expect
news from Europe, and on receipt of the telegrams frc
the Cuba, at Halifax, announcing the decline of fi1
twenty bonds to 64@66, ai d an advance in the Bank
England's rate of discount from seven to ten per ceil
tuere was a pressure to buy gold and to sell stocks.
Immediately after 4.30 P. M., tho Cuba's news w
known in the gold room, and the government broker
said to. bave sold over $2.000,000 ? at 130.:,' to 130 'X
supply the demand. Alter 5 P. M., sales were made
133. and afterwards at the close at 131 Loans we
