R?aos A Co. sold yestorday at thoir Brokors' Exchango, that building lot in Ohapel-stroet, opposite tho Northeastern Railroad, thirty feet front by one hundred and twolvo foot doep, for $1010 (ten hun dred and ten dollars). Also that throo and a half etory briok ro?idonco, woat side of Church-street, next north of tho First Baptist Church, contain ing twelve rooms, pantry and other conveniences, lot lifty-fivo foot on Ohurch-atreot and two hun dred and forty foot deep, but much out of repair, for $6775. Tus Ladies' Fair, at Hibernian Hall, last night, w*as crowded to overflowing. Tho Tableaux were Buporbly gotten up, and very well executed. "Hia watha's Wooing" and "Minohaha's Death" wero particularly fino. The mise en scene showed a thorough appreciation of Longfellow. "The Tillage School" and "Rowena and Rebecca" were much admirod. "The Literary Wife" was an ad xnirablo concoption of tho Das bleu, but tho last tableau outshono them all. It represented "tho new regime?hoxr Cuffoo and Dinah feel." The colored lady was dressed within an inch of her life in semi-bridal costume, putting on "airs,' the gentleman, i. e. Cuffoo, a consummate dandy, bedizened with jewelry, ogling tho fair Dian through his lorgnette. In the background were two poor white "buckra:" ono washing,?up to her elbows in the soap-subs; the other ironing -with one hand, holding tho baby on the other arm. This last pantomime, we feel assured, needed no interpreter. There will be another set of Tableaux to-night, and we advise all who have, and those who have not been thorn last night, to come and seo them, and to be certain to bring their wives and little folks. The ransio of the 6th U. S. I. Band waB a groat addition to the evening's, entertainment. Tho Anatalaacopo was one of tho leading fea tures of the evening, and attracted a great many visitors. The two young gentlemen in charge of it acquitted thomselvoa admirably. Tho "brick" is still thoro and may be looked through again to night. The Post?nico was in fall blast, doing a big bu ainoBs. The way those fair officials dispatched the malos was a caution. A short distauce from dranitavilie, directly on the railroad, the new KalmiaSMillB are going up. From present pros pecta .t?ey bid fair to equal the largest in tho State. Augusts seems ?prosp?rons. We see thero ??scarcely any trace of the war, and the noted en terprise of its citizens is visible in all directions. Oar et ay, {however, in Augusta, was not long, and ?we were unable to jjoo the oity more than in a general view In (the afternoon we ?returned to Aiken, where tho flood host of the Aiken Hotel, Mr. Smxser, had fin excellent dinner .proparcd for us. And here m& would speak ?commendingly of the management of this hoteL It is so exceedingly seldom <?hat one going into the interior finds a place to ?top where any kind of decent aocom ' modationsj ?an be had, that when one ia found we think it deserving -of more than passing notice. Mr. Smtbeb is a Y_ery good and ??entive landlord, and he and his amiable ?life understand thoroughly how to make you comfortable. We make this sp?cial mention of the Aiken House because many persons, this summer, will be fh quest of a healthful retreat, and we can assure them that they can visit Alken and be well cared for. Wednesday morning, at the Citadel, within tho inner enclosure, we saw about twonty gentlemen undergoing the penalty at tendant upon absence without loavo on the night previous. These gentlemen were compelled to spend a good portion of tho morning in tho healthful exorciso of porambulating an imaginary circle, each perambulator bearing upon hie shoul der a reapeotablo sized pieco of pine wood. Ycs torday evoning, however, wo wero in tho aamo place, an eye-witness of a mournfully ludicrous Bpectaclo. Whilst tho Cth Regiment of U. S. Regu lars wero drawn out in lino on r drosB parade, several prisoners wore marched up in front of tho liffo, and each delinquent reprimanded or sen tenced, as the miedomoanor required ; each one, of course, dotting his chapeau whon ?called for ward. As said ceremony was performed by tho last culprit called upon, a head stood confessed in an entire and disgraceful stato of hairless nudity, and the owner of tho head, which boro a striking rcMomhlanco to a human billiard ball, was inform ed in military parlances that ho bad been found guilty of tho crime of robbery, whereforo he was sontenced, first to bo drummed out of tho regi ment, and next to undergo two years' imprison ment in tho ponitentiary at hard labor. Tho prisoner was then seized upon by ? filo of guard, who suspended around his nock a rudo necklace of thick twine, to which was attached a board, on which was written in letters of hugo dimensions tho singlo but expressive word, "Robbeby." Ho was then marchod along around tho entire en closure, with a bayonet projecting on caoh sido of hia so closely Bhavon hoad. Tbo poor wrotchod creature mado a vain and sickly attempt to play tho facetious by inspecting tho inscription upon the disgraceful necklace-, but the smile faded ore it was born, and gave place to a look that a dog wears whon caught in the act of purloining a bone. On motion of Alderman Steinmeyer, tho Mayor was authorized, in oaae of the non-acceptance of tho oflico by any of tho gentlemen elected, to fill suoh vacancy. On motion of Alderman Enston proper ballot boxoa, seourod with good locks, woro orderod to be furnished to the Managers. Alderman Wuilden gave notice of his intention to introduce a bill to amond tho Ordinance regu lating tho salary of the teacher of French in the High School, and asked that this be considered its first reading. Agreed to. Alderman Gerdtb, from Committee on Streets, made the following report : Tho Committee on Streets recommended to Council, some time ago, the regular laying out of a section of laud bounded south by Tradd-atreet, north by Broad, east by Logan, and west by a pond owned by A. H. Chiaolm, Esq.; the buildings are all destroyed, excepting one. The Committee then reported to have this section ombodied, and running tho stroets parallel with the adjacent streets, which would give each lot-holder a well formed lot. This report was considered by Council and re ferred back to the Committee .on Streets, for the purpose of reporting more fully, and to have a plat drawn, as was suggested. Your Committee now respectfully report, that many obstados have appeared, of which they were not aware at the timo the first report was made, as they had neither map nor plat to ho guided by; and tho plat before you now is far from being complote, but is suffi cient to show that the plan proposed then cannot be carried out to the advantage of the lotholders, on account of there being too many small lots, and many of them of a depth below one hundred feet, and nearly all the lots weBt of New-street and east of Savage-street have only a depth of very little more than one hundred feet,?aud as the laying out proposed would give the lots between New and Savage streets a depth of about one hundred and twenty-five feet, and tho lots between New and LogaU streets about two hundred feet, it will therefore be perceived that this plan could not be made satisfactory to the lotholders generally. But it certainly would reflect upon the good taste and enterprise of the people of Charleston, and bo decidedly against the landholders of the city to rebuild this portion in the old cornerwise way after all the buildings bat one are gone and the placo baa been converted into an old Hold; so mach so, that about one-third of these lots havo been completely levelled, and the land marks de stroyed, an?. tho wayfarer has thought proper to choose hia own roads, which he considered moro direct and more convenient than the streets made by tho city. Your Comn?ttc? therefore recommend that a meeting of the lotholders be called by Council for the purpose of obtaining their consent, and for them to choose a board of trustees, to whom they might entrust all their lota, each of them taking a certificate for tho same, stating the number of superficial leot that each plat or deod calla for, (andar? actually there, ) naming the locality of each lot. Tho board of trustees may then adopt aud recommend to Council the plan now proposed or any other plan which they, in their judgment, consider better. After the streets and lots shall bo laid out, all the lota shall be put up at auction, giving each lot or certificate-holder notice of suoh sales, so as to enable him or them to attend them; and should any of the oertifioate-holders purchase any lot or lots in the same locality that his certificate calls for; and should such certificate call for loss land than what he bought, he shall pay the balance, according to. tho price made; and should the loi so bought be leas than his certificate calls for, thon bo or they must credit on such certificate, and the balance is paid to him or them when all tho lauds are Bold, excepting lotholders on Logan street and Tradd stroet should contribute a por tion of thoir lands for widening said streets. On New and Savage streets there is nothing lost by widening,.for these streets are becoming muoh shorter, and, therefore, what is lost in one way is made up in another; and as Broad street is not widened, of course there is no loss thoro. There are no doubt many lots which have en cumbrances on thorn, and others again belonging to minors. Let the trustees retain tho former until the encumbrances can be removed ; and as for the proporty belonging to minors, let applica tion be made to the Court of Equity for the sale of this property. For If a double price should be obtained, at the expiration of seven years than what it might bring now, it would yet be to the advantage of these minors to sell now. It should farther bo remembered that if there is no attraction offered to this portion of the city, it may remain in its present state for many yoars to oome. For we have had examples of this kind in days of prosperity, when there .was no lack of means to cause it. Many lots, the buildings of which were destroyed by-the great fire of 1838, wero not rebuilt upon until ten or fifteen years after. Ana as we are almost sure of getting street oars next winter, which no doubt will bave a ten dency to move the town more toward the present suburbs, as has beon the case in all cites where thoy have been introduced, a,nd some of our prettiest and most pleasant parte may become negleoted by it. Jiut if this spot is taken in hand now, good wide streete made, beautifal shade trees planted (of whioh so many varieties are so well adapted to oar climate), this, with a good large lot, on a good wido street, cannot fail to help considerably-to havo this portion robuilt. In conclusion, tho Committee deem it not out of place to state that the proposal offered is not mado for any eelfieh purposes. They would say to tho landholders: ''Don't deceive yourselves, and think that the city will purchase your proper ty if you withhold your consent." Tho city tins already its full share of debts; and besides that, if the city bays out the intoroat of those who are. perhaps, born and raised thoro, to whom should the city look for purchasers ? It is, thereforo, Tory desirable for ali that thio plan, upon the whole, should be carried into effoct; for those who wish to sell will have a much bettor chance to get more for their lots after they shall have been unproved, especially whon it is borne in mind that all tho improvements contomplatod are to bo carried out at tho expense of tho city.
