BEMARKH?For several weoks the news from Europe
las indicated tho approach of a great money panio?one
?f those emorgoncles in the commercial world whloh
ring the strongest firms to bankruptcy. This orisio
has no doubt been mainly produced by the danger of a
war in Germany, and its gradual oxtenalon to all Eu
rope, but the great decline in Cotton and other causes
havo not boon without their influence. The last news
by the Cuba has probably given us a view of some of
the worst features of tho case commercially, and If the
British Government has suthorizod the Bank to sus
pend tho action of the charter, which Is probably to
permit a temporary suspensi?n of specie payment, the
fltringenoy in money matters there will cease in a vary
short porlod. The extent to which this crisis may act
en this country is yet to bo determined. In the South
matters have beou so prostrate for a long time that ihsy
cannot well be worse, and tho great mass of tho people
hero will pass through it without suffering to any great
extent by its action.
W COTTON.?The demand for the staple has boon good,
tnd the market has had an advancing tendonoy most of
the week. The trade has also developed a now feature,
which Ih the continued advance of tho staple hero in
the face of a heavy decline in England. The British

ITico of the staple, that we naturally look for a fall here
Thon tho market there goes down. Bat the matter has
been reversod on this occasion, and we hope for its oon
Unuauco, for ths benefit of the cotton grower of the
South, whOBo interest has long demanded a competitor
t* the English cotton buyer. Tho firmness of the New
York market and the demand from Northern manufac
turers, whoso stock of good Cotton, wo learn, la small,
las given the tone to the market here, and has, to a
(roat extent, regulated tho price.
On Friday last the market remained without change,
120 bales being disposed of at 29 to 82o. per lb. for Low
Middling, to Miildllrig Cotton. On Saturday there was
In improved inquiry, and most of the Cotton offered
found ready purchasers st Improved i atea, most grades
tf the staple advancing during ths day K to lo. per lb.,
and tii o Bales amounting to about three hundred* bales,
Itriot Middling Cotton bringing ?3c. per lb. On Mon
day 100 bales ohaoged hands, but the markot was irreg
' alar and prices so unsettled as to prevent reliable qno
V ta?onr?, but the transaoUons indicated a decided upward
htendency in the value of the staple. On Toes lay prices
flBntinuod to go up. and Strlot Middling was sold at 86o.
per lb.,?the operations of the day extending to about 100
hales. On Wednesday 350 bales were disposed of, Strict
Middling Cotton I i some cases bringing 37a per lb.
Yesterday the im.ri.et continued buoyant and upward,
With sales of 300 bales, mostly of the lower grades
selling stock light. We quote :

the Cuba, at Halifax, announolug tho decline of five

England's rato of discount from seven to ten per cent.,
thore was a pressure to buy gold aud to soil stocks.
Immediately after 4.30 P. M., tbo Cuba's news wsb
known in tho gold room, and tho govo-nment broker is
said to have sold ovor $2.000,000 at 130,', to 130.U to
supply tbo domain!. Alter 6 P. M-. sales were mado at
133. aud afterwards at the cIobo at 131>?. Loans woro
made flat, and two, threo, and four per oent. woro also
paid for carrying gold. Govorumout is said to havo
sold about $15,000.000 to-day.
Tho foreign exchango market was dull throughout the
day. pending the expocted news from Europe. Prime
bankers' sixty day sterling bill? are quoted 109K to
109K from first and second bands, and Paris francs

The stock market was strong throughout tho day,
until the receipt of the Cuba's ne?s after 4.30 P. M.,
wbon a raid was made on the markot, and Erie was sold
down to 72, Plttsburg to 84, Michigan Southern to 79 \,
Reading, 107%; Chicago and Northwestern to 28, Now
York Contrai to 9.1*,' to 93K. and Cumberland to 45.
The mai ket closed unsettled bnt strong. Parties wero
buyers who are of opinion tbat the declino is only tem
porary, and that war in Europa will ultimately have
the effect of advancing the prices os all American so
caritl s.
The monoy markot is moro active, owing to tbo de
mand from buyers of gold from Government, and coll
loans range from five to six per cent
About $20,000,000 in currency will be required to
morrow to pay for the $15,000,000 gold said to have been
sold by Governmoat to-day, and it is appreheuded tbat
some of the eager buyera to-day will be compelled to
seU tboir gold for cash to-morrow, in order to meet their
payments.
