THE JEWISH PENTECOST, or Shebuotli, commenc
ed on Saturday night, and will tormiuate this
evening at starlight It is observed by tho Israel
ites agreeably to tho Divino command, "And ye
shall count unto you from the morrow after the
Sabbath (tir?t, day of Passover) from the day that
yo brought the sheaf of the wave offering. There
shall be seven completo Sabbaths. Evon unto the
morrow after tho seventh Sabbath shall ye num
ber fifty.daya." From the counting of "weeks,"
therefore, this festival derives its name, it being
literally a "Feasts of Weeks." On the fiftieth
day, or morrow after tho seven complete weeks,
an offering was brought unto the Lord of tho fiiBt
fruits of the land; and wo can readily understand
tho feelings of an agricultural pcoplo at having
the blessing of God on tho fruits of their labor,
and how readily they must have brought a portion
thereof as- an offering unto lum. But, besides
this, the first day of the festival ia tho anniversary
of the mo?t important evont that occurred to
Israel, the giving of tho ton commandments from
the heights of Sinai-the Law, also poetically
callod''the Light." This "light" thfty have pre
served from generation to generation. .It has
been with them throughout all thoir journeys,
even in the land of their enemies; and, although
centuries have rolled by, it still exists ta an "in
heritance of the congregation of Jacob."
