The latter copies the article on Stonewall Jackson's Last Days, by Dr. HONTEB MCGUIRE, from the Richmond Medical Journal. WEATHER, ETC.-We are having most delightful weather this month; rather hot, perhaps, but not more ao than is usual at this season. The nights are cool and refreshing, inviting tired nature's sweet restorer; always provided, however, you have taken the necessary precautions to secure immunity from tho attacks of the sanguinary mosquito host. We have had an abundance of rain during the past few weeks, laying the dust in the city, and stimulating vegetation in the coun try. The health of the city, as far as we are in formed, is very good at this time; no sp?cial type of disease prevailing, and the doctors complaining of having nothing to do. Altogether, wo have every reason to be thankful for the blessings a kind Providence has thna bestowed npon ns. THE FIBE yesterday morning was rear the cor ner of John and Elizabeth streets, in a hay and grain atore on Elizabeth street. It was first no ticed about two o'clock, ?hen the alarm waa givtn, and Mr. MOBAN'H family awakened (to whom thia store belonged). Tbo roof of Mr. M.'s house caught several times in the course of the morning, but the fire was always promptly extinguished by the firemen, who had gone out on the roof. The grain store WRB ontirely consumed, though it waa built of brick. Owing to the great scarcity of water, the Fire Department had great difiiulty to master the fi?mes, and the engines worked away from a little after two o'clock till daylight. Mr. MORAN had juat received a fresh cargo of feed aud grain a few dajB ago; was partially insured at the Agency of Messrs, TUPPER A LANE, for $1000 on house and $2000 on the ?lock. The fire waa undoubtedly the work of an incen diary. Mr. MOHAN bad his kitchen burned io a similar manner about three months ago. If our police is inadequate to protect citizens again- the fiendish work of the midnight incendiary, we are certainly in favor of having the force increased; i. e. if there is a reasonable expectation that such increase of the police will afford us greater secu rity of life and property. CiiAMBEn OF COMMENCE,-Tho regular quarterly meeting of this body waa held at the Hiberoian Hall laet night, according to previous announce ment. The meeting was well attended. A large number of new members were eleoted. After the usual routine business had been dispatched, a ae ries of resolutions were Adopted, in reference to the shipping interest of this port. On motion of H. QOCIIDIS, Esq., a resolution was adopted appointing a committee to proceed to Cincinnati, in conjunction with the delegates ap pointed by the Bjard of Trade, for the purpose oi urging the completion of the Charleston and Cin cinnati Railroad. GEOBOE A. TBENIIOLM, Esq., offered a resolution calling for ? committee to confer with City Coun cil, in reference to the rebuilding of the city. He supported tho resolution by an able and appropri ate epeeoh. After the business had been transacted, the So ciety eat down to a bounteous collation, farniahct' by Madame A. FAVIZB. The oervices wero of a very impressive and interesting charaoter, and reflect great credit upon all who have exhibited so great interest in promoting the welfare of the young, by religious instruction. Such instructions aro calculated to bo of much benefit, particularly when conducted on the plan adopted by this Church, where music becomes one of its features. Tho exeroises wore commenced with a Sunday School hymn, sung hy the ohildren under the di rection of Professor Oso. A. ROBINSON, whose un tiring efforts in giving musical instruction to them has been amply rewarded by the beautiful manner iu which quite a number of hymns were sung dnring the afternoon. After prayer by the Rev. Mr. CUTHBEBT, Pastor of the Church, the Superintendent of the School, W. S. HENNERY, Esq., read the Annual Report, which was very satisfactory, and gave evidence that the teachers, by their zeal and perseverance, had again fully established the School, after a temporary suspension occasioned by the war. The ohildren were then addressed by the Rev. Mr. CDTBBBBT in his naual pathetic and instruc tive style, bringing to the attention of parents and children their duty, and the advantages to be de rived by early religions instruction. Dr. S. H. BROWN was next called on, who ad dressed the congregation and ohildren in a chaste, distinct and handsome manner, which could nqt but eiioit the approbation and hearty co-opera tion of all present. Another hymn by the childron, and the bene diction by the Pastor closed these pleasant exer cises, which could have been enjoyed by the large assembly for a much longer time. HOMICIDE.-About6o'clock yesterday evening a colored man waa killed under the following cir cumstances: Tom Levy, freedman, living on King street, below Tradd, had a "fuss" with his wife; she ran out into the street; he pursuod her, pistol in hand, and ordered her to como back. She grasped his hand, so as to prevent his shoot ing her. He firnd, and shot his brother, Jim Levy, who happened to be one of several colored per sons standing close by during tho melee. The ball took effect on tho left Bide of his neck, severing the carotid artery, it is thought. The hemorrhage was very profuse, and the man died in about 10 min?tes. Tom ran back through tho lot (Mr. PE.VDEROAST'B), jumped the fence into the Scotch Church yard, and got away. Several froedmen standing by voluuteered to assist the police in their effort? to capture him, and succeeded about 11 P. M. in arresting him on East Bay. Tom sus tains a bad character in his neighborhood; dis posed to bo quarrelsome; always carries a pistol, and threatens to nee it on the least provocation. TBOVOST COURT-May li-United States va. JOHN FOBBES, white.--Assault.-The defendant stood charged with beating a freedman on tho 10th inat. daring the row in King and Radcliffe streets. A number of witnesses were examined for the proBocation and defence. The offence was not proven, and the Court diaoharged the prisoner. An intelligent colored man, a lawyer, assisted in the prosecntion. He was quite self-possessed, and conducted the cross-examination with great credit to himself. We are authorized to state that he is in no wise connected with Mr. BOWEN'B practico. United States vs. JOSEPH BILLETDOX, white. Stealing sashes from a negro's house.-Found guilty, and sentenced to ten days' imprisonment. The United States ti?. B. REILS_Selling li quor to soldiers.-Witnesses for the prosecntion I having failed to appear, the case waa deferred. The United States vs. Plenty Mlnyard and Bony Oadsden.-Stealing a boat_Defendants admitted that they had taken the boat, and agreed to pay the owner, Carolina Michael. He demands thirty dollars for the nee of the boat, and as indemnity for the loss his crop had sustained by the time he waa engaged hunting for the boat. The Court sentenced the prisoners to thirty days' hard labor. I The several parties engaged in the Elliott-street row on Saturday night, are to be tried before Military Commission. So also the freodmen from Barnwell, accused of stealing horste ard mole? hear Graham's Turn-Out. BAHNWELL.-Tho Sentinel of Saturday, speaking of the crops, says*. "As far as we have been ablo to observe the crops in the District are promising-. The wheat crop, in some localities, has been in jured by rust,,but in. other. sootionB look?"-well.
