The oldest church now existing in this country
is situated near Stnitb?eld, Isle of Wight county,

went to Germany and-Switzerland, and in 1849

This blouk ia to bo elegant, and, as far as
practicable, fire-proof; the centre to be laid
out as i? public garden, with pleasure-walk?,
shrubbery, fountains, etc. Connected with
the building, and surrounding the garden, to
be a colonnade, sar m cunte d by a'good promo-,
nade. '' '
The first floor'of the blook to be divided
into sixty spacious stores, opening on the ad
jaoent etreet^-nnd also on the colonnade, and
public garden.within. The tocond floor will
contain forty-seven stores, opening on the
promenade. On this floor will also be located
a spacious opera house, assembly rooms, and
other places of public resort and innocent
amusement. The third floor will be sur
rounded by a spaoiooB gallery, and will be
appropriated to society and Masonio halls,
a-ikdemies of art and design, photograph
galleries, etc.

been agitated at different times, since the fire I
of 18G1. Two weeks ago the Committee of I
Ways and Means in our City Council recom
mended the appointment of a Committeo, to
confer with the lotholders, and ascertain what j
amount would be required to purchase the
proporty. Such a Committee wits appointed,
and on Thursday night last a roport was made
(whether official or informal, wo do not now
remember), that the lots aro valued at about j
$167,000, but that it would probably take
tbreo or four timos that amount to purchaso
thom.
This being tho case, we may take it fpr
granted, that in tho present condition of the
finances of the city, such a proposition can
not bo seriously entertained. An open park,
covering the entire equnro, would, in a by
gienio point of* view, doubtless be moro de
sirable than tho arcade, with an interior gar.

when wo cannot get what wo vt*ould like most,
we must bo content with that whioh is within
reaoh. And as this enterprise presents so
j muoh to recommend it, we sincerely hope to

One of the great writers and philosophers
of New England is GEORGE. BANCROFT. Six
or eight heavy volumes (we do not recollect |
exactly how many) of documentary, colonial
and revolutionary history of the United
States, have placed him on 1 he highest pin
nacle of fame (in Boston). Outside of this he
has dono nothing to entitle bim to the high
position which the country has assigned him.
Thanks to the well-organized syBtem of mu
tual admiration and reciprocal puffing, in
modern Athens, Mr. BANCROFT has attained
a patfing reputation. Ile husbands bis re
source-*; only speaks and writes on great oc
casions ; looks very wise, and ordinarily pre
serves a stately, dignified silence.
lie did us the honor, a few years ?go, to
assist at the anniversary celebration of tbo
Battle of King's Mountain, in this State. Ile
was a good Slates Bights Demoorat in those
days, and uooepted, as a matter of course, the
adulation paid bim. Amusing was the scene
and interview between him and the Btudents
of the South Carolina College, at a party in
Columbia. There were two Soeieties eon
neoted with ?he Institution, and a deputation
from eaoh in ?'urn waited on tho distinguished
At-henian, allocating him in classic stylo and
fulsome strain, as might be expected under
the circum???7?noes. When deputation No. 1
Came, the great historian rose, and blandly
smiling, delivered himt*elf of a "out and
dried" little'speech. This done, he bowed

rises, smiles, bows, saye his speech,-(the
very same one as before), bows again, apd No.
2 withdraws. The great historian resumes
his seat, rapidly relapsing into tho Plymouth

passing around him. Some of the students

tain the old gentleman,-and after mustering
up sufficient courage, draw near the awful

One of the yonng gentlemen makes some re
mark, hy way of starting the conversation,
and what was his surprise when ho sees his
interlooutor again put ou his oratorical ex
pression of countenance, by this time well
known. . Mr. BANCROFT once again says the

after this let him alone for the remainder of

not proof against such repeated dampers.
