WE ABE glad to notico that certain very worthy
merchants of the city have decided upon closing
their atores every Saturday afternoon at two
f o'clock during the hot weather. This arrange
ment will greatly add. to the health and comfort
: of employees, and it is to be hoped that other
houses will follow the laudafilo example The ar
"' rangement ia to commence after Saturday, 12th
inst.
DEATH OF AM OLD CITIZEN OF COLUMBIA.-The
Columbia papers of yotterday announce tbe death
of Mr. BENJAMIN BAWLS, the oldest citizen of that
city, who breathed his laet on Wednesday, at half
past four o'clock. The Phonix says "be was a
man of strict integrity in every relation of life,
and we leave to some one more competent and in
timately associated with him to give a moro hon
orable and deserving notice. He died at the ma
ture age of ninety-four years; and the letter we
published from his pen, a few weeks ago, to Gen.
SuEitMAN, shows that that there was no declension
, in bis mental powers."
B. D. TOWNSEND, Ee<j.-We congratulate the
stockholders of tbe Choraw and Coalfields Rail
road Company on having secured the valuable
services of this gentUman as President of their
Road. Major TOWNSEND is a thorough practical
business man, conversant with everything that
pertains to his new office. His long connection
with the banking interest of the State endowed
him with peculiar qualifications for his present
needs; for "raising the wind," we take it, will be
the firat duty of the new President.
We hope the Major will make a successful
- - - officer (bot in fact we have no doubt of that), and
that the coal may soon be brought to Charleston
from the Deep River Minea.

ine.-Stealing.-JAMES BROWN, Policeman, sworn,
stated: "Met dofoudant, early this morning, in
Chapel etrcet, with a large bundlo ander uis arm;
inked him what ho had; Baid it waa a sail ho got
rrom a boat at the foot of Markot street, belong
ing to Mr. PETERS, who told him to taho it home
for safo keeping. Dad Boen a boat of Mr. AUM
STBONQ'S at the foot of Calhoun etroet with a sail
missing; itiquired and found thld to bo the one;
arrested tho boy.
Mr. Wai. ARMSTRONG, sworn, statod that ho re
cognized the sail as his own; that ho had the boat
last night all trim, tho sails rolled up, and this
morning, on going down, found the sail gone; it
bad been cut o?" during the night.
The prisoner [an uncommonly hard looking
case] had a long story, wherein ho stated that ho
did not reside in this city of Charleston, but wea
from the country ; not very well acquainted ; had
been over to (Jurist Church, and rowed his pas
sage ovor in somebody's boat ; "had to take cafe
of the sail ; man tote me to tok it rout.' to he
Bister ; was jes'g wine to tok it roan', when dis here
man Btop mo, (lia mornln', at de streak of day.

tief it, no eech a ting." Senteuced to fifteen days'
hard labor on the st rec ta.
D. 8. ?a. Beoky Gillan.-THOMAS JACKSON, Po
liceman, sworn, testified that this girl had a dead
child ia tho yard ; boon dead for four days ; was in
a box; and unburied. ;
. The girl is quita young and appears to be half
an idiot ; stud eho had been sick, and did not
know the right place to go ; went to the Boper
Hospital, and they told her her panera woro not
right; then went to tho Provost Mardbal'?, and
they told her they had nothing to do with it ; so
aho'jnst let it stay.
Tho Court discharged her. j
[We are informed that an inquest waa held by
t?ie Coroner on tho same day, on which tho child
bad died; tho Coroner furnished a certificate, and
was afraid to entrust it to the mother, abe'ap
peoring idiotic to him. He gave tho certificate to
a colored man in the yard, and directed bim where
to go; the negro promised to do so; and yesterday
(four days after) tbo child was still unburied ]
TJ. S. os. Thomas Toner, a U. t?. sailor.-Police
man sworn, stated that while walking io Elliott
street, lust night, he found defendant lying down
drunk, unable to take care of himsolf, and took
charge of him.
Prisoner stated that he was nob drunk; had only
drank about fivo glasses of ale, which made him
aleepy. Fined $3.
TJ. 8. vs. Thomas McLean.-Larceny.-James
Walker sworn, Btated that be lives at No. l-l Chap
el-street; knows the prisoner; saw bim day before
yesterday try the door; he broke open the place
last night.
Eliza Walker eaid that ehe went to defendant's
house, and Baw her things there, to wit : two
dishes, china plates and some bowb>, one looking
glass, ono clock, and Beveral other things.
Mr. OPPENHEIM sworn, stated that he OWQB the
premises; bad placed Walker and bia wife in
charge. Defendant denied to witneaa lhat he had
the things, and then acknowledged that he had
tbem, but had bought them. Sentenced to thirty
days' hard labor.
NOVM. CABE IN COUBT.-Tbo Judges of the Pro
vost Court have their troubles as well aa other
people. Their time, patience and attontlon, ia
called iuto requisition by every imaginable kind of
care. Many of tho freedmen think it the great
panacoa-the sovereign enro for all tho ailmonta
colored flesh is heir to, as is shown hy a note re
ceived in thia Court yesterday. We copy literatim :

Tho Court decided that they had no jurisdiction
in this case.

Scott will bo able to procure a phyeician. Every
part of the city is properly cared for, and no one
naetl suffer for want of medical attendance be
cause of inability to pay.]

farlan from the Presidency of the road, the Stock
holders tender him their deep sense of the ser
vices he has rendered the company from the ,
inoipienoy of the enterprise up to this time, and
deeply regret that circumstances of an imperative
nature should now compel him to withdraw from
the active administration of its affairs.
There boing no further business the meeting

above meeting it appeared that the debts of the
Company aro iuoousiderable and represented in
Confederate Curretioy, while ka assets for the
proseoution of tho work consists of about Three
Hundred. and Seventy-five Thousand Dollars in
tho Capital Stock? of the Northeastern aud Cho
raw and Darlington Railroad Companies.
About ten miles of tho road havo been graded,
and comparatively little work is necessary to pre
pare tho road bed to receive tho superstructure
as far au tho North Carolina lino.
It is now proposed to make au e.irnest effort to
push forward the work, a8 soon as tho necessary
arrangements eau be perfected for that purpose ;
aud it will afford us pleasure, from timo to time,
to notice the progress wh.ch is made.
