SEJIENADE.-Wo tender our thanks for the com
pliment paid the DAILY NEWS last night, by Con
ductor WELTON and his Bplendid Band (6th U. S.
I.). Thoy gavo ns a very handsome serenade,
and played several pieces; among thom one of oar
favoriteB : "Como where my Love lies Dreaming,"
which oxcrcised ita potent charm on the very
devils in our third story, who for a space laid by
their "sticks." Wo feel under great obligation to
the- 6th Band, and will say, what wo have said bo
fore, that Charleston has never had tho good for
tune of having a finer band than this.
CHARLESTON DIRECTOIIY.-Tho enterprising
young gentlemen who undertook, some time ago,
the publication of a City Directory, we are pleased
to know have finally succeeded in their dosiga. A
copy of tho work has been laid upon our table by
tho publishers, Messrs. BURKE &, BOINEST, and
wo recommend it to our citizens, every ODO of
which will recognize ita usefulness. It is very
handsomely gotton up, and reflects much credit
upon its energetic publishers.

REDUCTION OF FARE TO NEW YOBK_It haB been
a source of grnat satisfaction to our citizens to
notice that Messrs. WILLIS & CHISOLM and RAVE
NKL& Co., Agents for New York stoamere, have
reduced the rate for carrying passengers to New
York, and the freight rates have also been some
what modified. Pablio opinion has for some time
past seen the necessity for this move, and thoau
having the direction of these vessels have acted
wisely in meeting this sentiment by a timely and
liberal concession. During much of the past sea
son some of the neighboring cities have enjoyed
facilities in their steam lines which we have been
deprived of, and we notice the present ohange with
the hope that hereafter the steamers forming the
lines to this point will be run on at least as favor
able terms as these communicating with our
neighbors. This much is absolutely necessary to
the prosperity of this city.
A Nsw HOUSE.-We are pleased to learn from
the announcement in another colamn that Messrs.
COURTENAY & TOBNHOLH, for many months past
favorably kuown to our business community as
commission and forwarding merchants at the
once important distributing point of Newberry,
S. C, have located themselves permanently in this
city, and propose conducting a general mercantile

11 or 12o'clock, Mosca Clomonts, a frecdman, in
tho omploy of Messrs. HOPKINS, MOPJJEIISON &
Co., waa going down to tho wharf, on business,
whon his attention was attractod by two colored
youths (disciples of old FAOIN, doubtless) follow
ing a gentleman, and making various etratogie
moves and manouvres, with a view to transfer a
silk pocket handkerchief from said gentleman's
pocket to their own. A colored boy was watching
their proceedings, and romonstratod with them,
whon thoy struck bia hat off his hoad, and com
menced beating him.
At this stage Moses came up, and intorloroJ,
saying, "It is a ah arno in you two followa to boat
this boy so." "What you got do wid it?" was tho
reply, and this angry retort was enforced hy a
brickbat from oach of tho two would-bo pickpock
ets. Ona of the missiles struck Moaea on the
occiput, the othor on the forehead, inflicting two
agly wounds. By this timo tho polico had come np,
and arrested all parties. Dr. 6. LOGAN was called
in, and promptly dressed the wound?. It is not
thought that tho injury is serions, unless some un
foreseen complication arise.
The two infractora of the peace aro named Ste
phen Brown and Adam Singleton,-both f jllowing
thieving as a profession, and well known to the
police. Two ladies, residing in Broad-etreet, see
ing these worthies on their way to the Gnard
House, joined the procession, and informed Lieut.
CAMPBELL, the ofllcor of the day, that thoy had
been robbod recently of sundry articles of cloth
ing, etc., and that they identified tho prisoners as
the thioves.
