THE CITY BAILBOAD.- The interrogatories put by us
yesterday, on this subject have elicited the desired re.
spouse. We find, upon information, that the project has
not been abandoned ; far from it The money is ail at
hand; the company are negotiating at this time with
contractors for the work. Lnmber, iron, sud other ma?
terial necessary, bave all fallen within the last few
months, and by waiting a little whilo longer the compa?
ny wiU save seme $'?0.000 or more in the expense of the
construction of the read; while they will ?till have
abundant time to complete it before November next,
when they hope to have it in running ordtr. As the
community is having fair accommodations st present
from the Omnibus Line, the company consider they are
warranted in deferring the execution of the work, and
thereby save twenty or twenty-five per cent, in the co
of the road.
DREADFUL FRIGHT.-The ruins of St Finbar'
Cathedral came near being the scene of a serious
calamity yesterday. While the workmen (who are en
gaged in taking down the steeple) were at work, the
policeman guarding the place thought ho saw the wall
opening and tbe steeple abont to tall, and giving the
alarm, immediately rushed from the building and ran to
the opposite side of the street where he was followed by
three workmen employ i d below. There were six men on
the steeple, and their situation, in cons?quence of this
?rematare repoit, now became painful in the extreme,
here was no chance of escape, and they gathered In
group, expecting momentarily to be precipitated to the
ground, and either crushed or badly hurt, and a Ger
man (who wis among the nnmber) was so badly frighten
ed that the blood gushed from his month and nose.
Fortunately for the party, rhe wall did not fall; and it
turned out that the policeman was mistaken, and had
so cause for bis apprehensions,
THE STREETS AGAIN.-Wo received a nnmber of let.
tera yesterday from parties residing in King-street be*
tween George and Calhoun, charging us with partiality,
because we singled ont the corner of Broad and East
Bay streets ss the slushiest place in town. They are
willing to leave the decision (as to which is the biggest,
.softest, blackest collection of mud), to a board of un?
biassed arbiters, confider t Kir g street will carry off the
palm Now we are sorry onrup-town friends should
consider them?elves slighted. This was mo?trem?te
from our intention. We know that Dais part of King
street ls in very bad order. The poor omnibus horses
bave to traverse this slough a dozen times a day. One
day's ral ? will make this street there impassable. Bnt
siter al), our King-street friends aro better off than their
Broad-street brotaren. The former, thanks to the nar?
rowness of the street, can cross, on an emergency, In a
hop. skip and Jump, and they get off with muddy boots
and breeches; bnt not so down town. We saw yester?
day sundry lodivlduls, d strone of crossing opposite
Messrs. Edgerton & Richards. They were looking this
way and that, bnt could not find any resting place upon
which they could venture to p'ant their fe et, so they cir?
cumnavigated this impassable gulf, and went over at the
crossing below. Fortunately, we have hoard of no
serious accidents aa yet; and we sincerely hope that
something will be dene before long, by somebody, to
afford the innocent public some sense of security.
THE MEDICAL COLLEGE or SOUTH CAROLINA.-The
Annual Circular of the Trustees and Faculty of this Col?
lege has been politely sent us by the Deon; and as
we have long cherished a warm regard for this venerable
institution, we propose to give something more than a
cursory notice. The Faculty is one of the best in the
country. Besides the regular Professors, a full staff of
supplementary Professors have been appointed, and tho
College now offers facilities and Inducements second to
none In the United state s.

The several changes indicated in the circular go to
show that the Trustees have come to the conclusion
that a younger arm should guido the helm; a happy
method of transfusion bas thus "een adopted,-throwing
young blood Into the vein H of the cid institution. With
.an energetic working ann like Dr. Ohlsolm nt the head,
the College must succeed.
We further note In the circular that although three
additional lecture? will be given daily, the charges to
students will be the sams as heretofore. Another new
feature in tho present circular ls the plan of tutorial
"qu'zzes,"-an admirable plan, one professor every
night recapitulating (in questioi s and answers) the lec?
tures gone over during tne p ecediug week.

about ll o'clock In the forenoon, he hoard that a man
bad rolled a barrel of flour from out of hlB store, No. 10
Market-street, and tl.at he ran alter him, and came np
to the defendant at about three hundred yards from his
store, rolling thc barrel along the street. Witness ob?
tained a policeman, and had tim arrested and -er.t to
the Guard House Witness knew the flour to bo his.

Kenney testified that on Wednesday las?, while he was

ing words between Kenney and defendant about some
rope, witness said, here is a rope which a boy left with
me yesterday or the day before. When Kenney went to
take the rope, d<fendant took hold of him, aDd said to
Kenney he sbould not have pocsession of it until he paid
him the money be owed him. A scuffle ensued, which
witness stopped. Defendabt then took np a brick, which
Kenney told him to drop, and he did ; but he bod not I
got twenty yards before be picked up another. Kenney
took the rope and walked off with it in his hand, and \
defendant cursed him a d-d Irish son of a b-. Sen?
tenced to a floe of $6. or ten dsye' imprisonment
B. McSally, c lored soldier.-Drank and disorderly.
Policeman Kiley testified that he was on duty on Wed?
nesday night in Anson street, and that shout 8 o'clock
the defendant came along drunk, whooping and yelling,
and clearing the sidewalk. Witness took bold of him
to carry him to the Guard House, when defendant re?
sisted and attempted to butt him with his head.and bite
bim, and hurt him every way he could. At last, wit?
ness used his club upon him, and brought him to the
Guard House. 'I ho case was referred to the captain of j
his company.
John H. Lawson.-Interfering with a sentinel on du?
ty.-Lawrence MoFarlan, (Jo. C, 36th regiment U. 8. C.
T., testified that he was on duty Wednesday night asa I
sentinel, and at about 9 o'clock the defendant came up '
acd asked him where was Calhoun stree*, which witness
showed hun. Defendant then asked him whether he
was white or black, and witness answered that he was
colored. Defendant then wanted to know what he was
doing with that eagle on bis hat; that tbry did 'nt like
such things in South Carolina, and put bis hand in hia
breast. Witness came to tho charge with bis musket
and then defendant dropped his hand. Witness called
Corporal of thc guard, and had him arrested. De- j
fendant was in liquor. Sentenced to pay a flue of {6.
MAYOR'S COURT.-There was nothing interesting be?
fore his Honor yesterday morning, there being but one
drunken man brought up, and bc was so orderly that he
was fined only $2.
Two men, who have been dispensing superior bran?
dies, wines, and cordials in small quantities to the
thirsty public without a license, were lined $100 each.
