The Burnt District.?Although hundreds of per sons pass through thin dark and miserable part of our J city every night, and a poition of them, from necessity, at a late hour, there have been no e fforts made to put j one or two gas lamps in it so as to enable passengers to see. at bast, a little of their way. An Artistic Tbxno.?We bad the pleasure of looking at one of the most beautiful presentation canes, the other day, we hive ever seen. tsc- hticfc was of the purest ebony, and the monnting wa? most elaborate and rich. The present was to a distinguished gentleman, as an apurecittlon of his high persrnai qualities, and for his able services. The taste and elegance of tho work xnanahip is unsurpassed, and ws are gratified to know that Charleston can prodfoce such artlsih workmen. Having said so much in regard to the excellent per formance, ft is only juft that we should mention that the head of the cane was designed and executed by Mr. Biddona, of the firm of Alien k Siddons. Sing-street, and that the beautiful < ngravlng was the work of Mr. 1 J?her, A Pair or Goelktb ?We were favoured, yesterday evening, with a peep at a piir of very handsome silver gebiete, made by Meters. Aixan & Siddons, manufac turing jewelers, No. 307 King street. These beautiful enps were made to the order of M. H. Nathan, Esq., the popular Chief of the Fire Department, who offers them as prizes at the approaching anniversary; one ,o the hand engine thnt shall throw the highest or longe?t B?eam, the other to the best steamer, as will be fouud in the programme of the anniversary celebration pub lished in another cblumn. The goblets are v< ry hand somely finished; one engraved with a tatteful design, representing a double-break hand engine; the other having a steamer engraved on it. Mr. Nathan merits the highest praise for (be ze?l and Uberallly he bas so repeatedly displayed in his efforts to further the Interests of bis department. Nothing is so well calculated to create the ri.ht kind of esprit de corps as this emulation and honorable rivalry to which the Chief here invites all the compacit?. Witnees cald that at this time Seig-ant Fuller, of the Police, came up. and ordered the man who was plavingto desist, as it was no hour for playing on the banjo; ho refused, l"g that he was going serenading. The Sergeant then orrleied witness to arrest defendant, which ho did, bnt defendant resisted, and eventually got away. Witnees Men went back to West street, which was a portion ot his p>?>t, and t'icre met defendant with Sergeant Fu'ler and \ olieem m Nolan, and the Sergeant again directed witness to arrest him, when defendant said he wouldn't go to thee>uard Rouse, that he was not one of?he party and then squared < If at witness. The Court found de fendant not guilty. Samuel He?ry, co ored, Anson Hohnes, colorid, Goo. Mitchell, colored, and Henry Holmes, colored.?Disor derly conduct.?John Mitchell, colored, testified that he was at the African Church in Calhriun street, on Sunday last, and that he crossed to tho opposite bide of the way to get a drink, when he saw and recognized Henry Hoi nies, George Mitchell, and SamuT Henry, and they all immediately rushed on him. Henry Holmes slid he was going to Iteid street to shoot Jim (irant, and showed a pistol, whu-h witness siw. Witness followed the crowd up to Heid street, at d saw Grant, who is a Irlend of his. The def ndauts etnt for Grant to come out of his hou?;, but witness told him not to go, for George Holmes had a pistol for him. but came out himself, aud as he came into the street, he saw a small bo; with a brick in hin band, which he made, bimdrop; Anson Holmes came at witness and challenge 1 blm to fight, which witness refused, and b-iug udvised to leave, did so, and returned to Calboun-strcct; when witness had got in the yard, Anson Holmes caught witness by the collar, and he tried to getaway, but Samuel Henry also took hold of him and held him, while Henry Holmes Crew a pistol and snapped it at him several times; a large crowd of people were around, and cailed out repeatedly, "don't shoot him;" Samuel Mitchell struck witness a severe blow on the head and cot it, but he cannot say what he was hit with. The sentence of Henry Hol nies for at tempting to shoot tho prosecutor, and of Samuel Mitchell for aiding and abetting, is thirty days' im prlsoDment: and that of George Mitchell and Anson Holmes for fighting and creating a disturbance, is ten days' imprisonment Theodore Gougb, eclored?Nuisance.?Sergeant Mc Donald of the police, testified that he saw two carts which are<?86d for carrying night soil with barrels, put into an open yard in St Phillp-Rirett, and that the stench which arises from these have caused great com plaints from the neighbors Witness stated that on these complaint, ho arrested defendant. There were no horses with the carts, but the latter were as filthy as they conld possibly be. Sentenced to $5 flno or tbree days' imprisonment Henry Edmondtdon, colored?Disorderly conduct? Thomas Draytou, colored, testified that he is step-father of defendant, and thathe is diaobeditntto his mother and himself, wayward and fond of bad company, which he will not quit?that be ia devoted toloaflop and fight ing, ard will not work, although he 1 as a good place. Witness stated that If defendant would behave himself, ho could bave constant employment. Witueaa begged that something would be dou? with defendant that might tend to a re'ormatiou. A man who was brought up for being exceedingly drunk, etat? d that he had just arrived In the city, and being bound by courtesy to drink to its prosperity, he perl aps had drank a glass or two too I much, but that ho was ? Illing to explain to His Honor through a $5 greenback. The apology was accepted. A gentleman of familiar manners, who having got intoxicated, and walked into the bouse of a citizen to sleep it ofT on a sofa, was kindly carried from bis resi dence to the Guard House, iu a scavenger's cart, for which charitable act be paid only $1>>. A sailor, who was trjiug to force himself into a htker's j oven, under the iniprcnxion tbut it was the steamer ho I belonged to, was lined $5 for loafing. A young man of lnquisitivo mind, who did'ntktow exactly where he lived, and consequently made up his mind to kDOck at every door until he found his resi dence, was stopped by the police just as he got into the full tide of successful experiment, hud a home provided I him for the small sum of $5. A bar keeper, who was moved by the spirit, to quench the thirst of several parched throats ou Sunday, paid 55 for his kindness.
