North hesitates while the financial policy of the
Government remains resettled. It is urged in
Washington that action upon the fuuding bill bo
taken, and that the revenue will be ampio for ali
purposes, and allow a large Binking fund, if the
financial scheme of the internal revenue confroit
tee be adopted. The amount desirable by this
scheme is estimated at fivo hundred million.-. Ir'
such is tho fact it is a heavy tax upon tho people,
"but, it is admitted, tho South must lie supplied

he retracted bis acceptation of a dinner invita?

RAILWAY ACCIDENTS AND VERDICTS IV ENOLANO.
The nnmber of railway disaster? in England last
year was greater than usual, and many heavy
verdicts were niven in favor of persons'who re
. ?ived severe injuries. The Southeastern Railway
Company were "cast" in very heavy damages in
several eases, especially those arising ont of the
Staplohurst accident. 'lu ODO of these-for the
oss of a hnaband, leaving two children-tho dam?
ages were ?7000- (*35,000)-?4000 for the widow
and ?1500 for each of the chiidreu. In fuir other
of these 8tap.ehur.-t cases the vt-rd iota were for
personal injuries, ??1500, ?2000 ?ir>n{) mid ?550,
making abogother ?14,550. Otnor claims for
losses by death ami personal injuries caused by
this terrible aoeij.-nt were c-'impromLoid by pay?
ment of some very large sums, varying in amount,
but making a tota!, wit'i the sums recovered by
the verdicts above mentioned, of sentit ?50,000. *
Tho Northwestern Company were defeudauts in
eight actions which were brought Lu trial. lu
one a verdict was given for the company; in
another, tl??.' plaintiff was uoneniiud. In the six
others verdicts w-re found for ?1250, ?.150, ?200
and ?200, also ?100 for the loss of a wife, against
the Great Northern there were three actions for
personal injuries, in one of which ?he damagos
awarded wore ?172'; in the other two, ?"100 and
?175 were given. The Laa?nsbire. and Yorkshire
Comp my had nine actions against them for per?
sonal injuries. Tu? verdicts were respectively for
