Tho selections are modo with very good judgment; aud there is always sufficient variety in the character of thc articles suit almost every taste. Mr. RUSSELL is the gent for this city. THE VIGILANT FUIE ENGINE COMPANY.-An ac? count of the celebration of the thirty-seventh anniversary of this company ten years ago, having been placed in our hands by a friend, wo take pleasure in quoting some extraots from it, as their parade on that day was one of the most interesti? ng we have ever witnessed, and made, at the ime, a strong impression on ns. The ?"th of Feb? ruary, 1856, "was the occasion of a general re mion of all the surviving members of the com? pany since its organization," and while thc young and active men took charge of a uew engine which had just been brought out for the company, and which they had christened tho "Little Giant," the honorary members manned tho ropes of the old engine, and in their march through the principal streets mado such a show as would bo oxpeclod of ono hundred and fifty-three men belonging to one corps, and all similarly uniformed. At that time there were five of the original members living, but now thero are but three, two of them J having sinco gone to their last resting-place. The company was formed as carly as 1?15, under tho title of "The Vigilant Fire Company," with no engine or apparatus; but in consequence of con? siderable destruction of property l'rom fire, they, as good citizens, associated themselves together to render help to their fellow-creatures. In 1S19 they were incorporated under tho namo of "Tho Vigilant Firo Engine Company," and on tho fourth of January, 1820, thc City Council tendered to thom ono of tho city engiucs, and from that time they have rendered all tho services they were capable of to arrest tho devouring element and to save tho property of our people. At thc present time they aro in a most nourishing condition, having lately increased largely in members, whose ambition is to bo useful to tho community; and, although their company may bo tho oldest, they wish to contend with their younger brethren in that spirit of generous rivalry which has always made tho Firo Department of Charleston so har? monious in alleviating tho distress of our doar old city when suffering undi r the ravages of destruc? tive flames. It is 8eldom that we condescend to pay any at? tention to anonymous communications addressed to ue, in our editorial capacity, especially where the tenor of thc nameless letters borders upon tho offensive and impudent. We cannot refrain, however, from serving np for tho edification of our [many readers, verbatum et lilTotim, a few specimens of the ridiculous commet? that have been elicited from several thick-skulled and igno? rantly superstitious individuals, by tho publica? tion in ye3terday's issue of what any man, with the least particle of common sense, could readily per? ceive was hut a serio-comic humorous burlesque of tho ridiculous ghost stories so freely circulated in reference to tho owl-liko and calf-like sounds that have been heard of late in the vicinity of the burnt district adjaccLt to tho Circular Church. Letter number one rer\ds as follows: CHARLESTON, February 8, IfGt?. Editors Daily News: GENTLEMEN-I have been much pained and surprised, on the perusal of a sensation article, published in this morning's is? sue of "THE NEWS," at perceiving that your desire to create an excitement in our quiet community should so far have got the better of your sense of propriety as to have induced you, in an allusion to the absurd ghost stories in relation to the strange sounds that havo been heard to proceed from the ruins of the Circular Church, so to pander to tho superstitious fears of tho timid as to crcato in their minds such unwholcsonio effects as cannot fail to arise from a diseased imagination, artfully worked upon by suggestions of supernatural visita? tions. I am at a loss to conceive what good result can accrue from this foolish endeavor on your part to get up a sensation story calculated to produce such evil results. Respectful ly, N. S. Now we havo not thc slightest suspicion as to tho identity of our unknown correspondent ; but inasmuch as hu signs the initials N. S., wo take it for granted that he is a num-skull, and so hy this name wo will speak of him. Mr. Noa-SKULL must certainly bo afflicted with a collection of mud on the brain, or ho would have perceived at a glanco that in our remarks in relation to tho " absurd ghost stories/' we most emphatically intimated that ghost number ono was nothing but an owl, and ghost number two an innocent calf; and that, moreover, tho tenor of tho entire article was such as made it evident to any one but a num-skull, that ve simply intended to burlesque tho whole affair. This is even a better explanation than (ho < alfsto ry, and beats the bear and panther story ali hollow. Letter number three is from a strict believer in ghost stories. For tho benefil, of M. * um-Skull, we would remark, en passant, that wc do not en? dorse thc opinions and sentiments therein set down. CHARLESTON, February 8. Messrs Editors,-! perceive from an article pub? lished in THE NEWS ot to-day's issue that you aro endeavoring to throw into ridiculo a most serious matter. I rofer to tho strange sounds and stranger sights that I myself have heard and seen night after night in and around tho burnt district on which stand the ruins of the old Circular Church. If you would visit the spot in earnest on any night you choose between the hours of twelvo and two, hear what I have heard, see what I have seen, and feel rchat I have felt, your opinion would probably undergo some change. So much for tho ghost correspondence. Wo again repeat that wc favor the owl and calf or dog solution of tho problem. GLASS HOUSES.-We clip the following from tho I New York Tribune of tho 3d instant : A Georgia papor assures us that tho disposition in tho South to read new books is unexampled. Wo aro glad to hear it. Wc hope also they will not wholly neglect tho old books. Let us suggest tho Spolhng-Book, Lindley Murray, and tho New Testament. They arc old, but tbuy will bu now down South. The Tribune of tho same date publishes a letter on public lands in Iowa, from a Mr. HENB?
