the examination of a few facts we havo to present
Tue points required in tho fire-proof filling of a Safe,
may bo enumerated as follows :
1st. It must bc a slow conductor of heat
2d. It must hold a large quantity of water to vaporize
when attacked by Ure.
3d. It must be unchangeable until a moro than ordi?
nary degree of heat is applied. In this consists ono of
tho chief merits pf using alum.
4th. It must be of such consistency that lt will neith?
er escape thrown small leaks, nor crack into fragments
when exposed to violent heat cr to severe concussions
in faEing.
8th. lt should not oxidize or rust the iron frame, aa
all wet mixtures, such as plaster mixed with water, are
ao well known to do.
Cth. It should not communicate dampness to tho in?
terior chamber, and thereby mould books, impair parch?
ment and other valuables.
7th. Its value in all tho above conditions should not
be impaired I j agc and reasonable usage.
In every Safe that is thoroughly fire-proof, there must
be something to generate steam.
Heretofore we havo used Plaster of Paris, mixed with
?water, for this purpose.
Tho objections to using water in the niling of Safes
are :
It renders thc Safe very damp, thereby often ruining
papers by loosening seals, kc.
It soon corrodes thc iron of thc Safe, and rusts holes
through which tho filling oozes out.
By the evaporation of tho water thc Safe soon becomes |
less firo-proof.
These objections we have entirely obviated in our
present Safe, as our filling ls as dry as gunpowder, and
when tho fire takes placo, tho steam is generated by the
melting of the alum.
