THURSDAY MOUSING, DECEMBER 14, 186 New I {(io ks. B.VUK1SOT..S. A Nov?. Bj Challes Lever. For sa by John Bassett, Som? people seem tc be gifted with immortal ty-at least there is no end to them-and LEVI is one of these. Not having our Encyclopedia : hand, we cannot say how many years have pass? since his first-born saw the light, nor whether tl mercurial Charles (/Malley or the rollicking Ha ry Lorreqner are entitled to the honors of prim* gemturc. Dm these were followed in quick ai rapid succession by M numerous brotherhood "Jack Hinton," "Tom Bturko of Ours,'- "Bolas Cashel," "The Knight of Gwynne," "Kate O'Dom ghoe," "The Martins of Cru' Martin," "Maurie Tierney," "The Dodd Family Abroad," "Thc Wa tons," "Sir Jasper Carew," "Gerald Fitzgerald and 'Tarrington," are ali wc happen to renieniix at present. LEVEI:, though undoubtedly one of tho mot voluminous of eotcmporary English novelists, cai not lay chum to the highest place in that path i literature. He never entered thc list in eatii with T.IACKEK.VY; with BCLWEK, in tho delineatic of lifo in tho upper classes of English societ; with DICKENS in descriptive power, either of scent or character-yet in his own chosen path he hi had few superior*. . Being, fortunately for himself aiu^ bis reader a native of (?reen Flin, he considers Ireland h own private, particular cabbage gardem. in wine uo unhallowed Sasaenagh, nor other outside bai hanan, Las any right to dig; and that he digs t some parp?se, the abov.j enumeration of annui products will abundantly demonstrate'. LEVEI moreover, in the days of his youth, wc belier* was a surgeon in the British army; hence his fl niiliarity with everything relating to thc servie? and eapecialif^with the habits, humors and etpr de cor]* of that peculiar institution of thoBritis anny-the Mess Table. Charles O'Malley, th production of his youth, wc consider by faa- th best of all his stories: there ia a freshness an buoyancy about it that never Hags, throng! moro than three hundrtd pages. To bc sure there is a trillo too mueh of sherry, claret an diablerie ia it-but then it is all in charactei Harry Lorrequer and Jack Hiutonarc attempts i; thc sanio vein, but, in our opinion, far less sue ?cess ful. Thc Knight ol'Gwynne and The O'Donoghoo prc sent a fine delineation of Irish life and characte as jt cxiuted in the days befbro tho Union. Her wc have the gay ornaments of the trish Court, th brilliant galaxy of thc bar and forum, nnrivulle. in Europe for their eloquence, wit and humor, ur banity and polish of manners; and the thousam and ?nie nameless trilles, which, combined, giv< charm to society and zest to its enjoyment. Thia lt is well known,'is historical, and not the mer creation of thej artist's laney. In the numerou memoirs of that day we get glimpses of a society ii Dublin which has seldom, if ever, been surpasse? for a combination of bi amy, grace, eloquence generous hospitality, a high, chivalrous sense o honor, brilliant wit, a classical taste and scholarh acquirements. Rut, t?mpora mutanter, the Par Lament House is now a bank, and the marble pal aces of the absentee nobility of Ireland are no? put to ignoble uses-giving entertainment to trav? elling bag-men, and serving to display thc gaud] wares of tho haberdasher. Maurice Tierney, wc believe, is thc first ol LEvmt'sjcontinental novels; interesting, more from its incidental connection with tho stirring time? and characters of he first Empire, than for any intrinsic merit. All his subsequent novels, during the last lift ecu years, have been written on the .?Continent. His hoalth, or his creditors, wc forget which, rendered a prolonged absence from Eng? land desirable. In all these books, however, Ire? land is ?till thc theme. A re duced Lrish family of high.?fj?cciit rind great pride of ancestry, forms .tho foreground; some English nabob, retired grocer, banker or stock broker, with Ins family, vidgar, in their love of pomp and display, and, like all parvenus, every trying to hide the fact. All ? that is admirable is on the ?ide of the poor Irish; \ihat is ridiculous, in the rich but vulgar Saxons. Tiiis ia thc stock in trade of all his con? tinental novels. Of the nations of Europe, this Bohemian tells us nothing. He carries you to Baden-Baden, to Rome, Florence, Yionna and Paris; but it is Lreland still you see and hoar, and the selfislmcss of tho English you aro disgusted with. The scene of Barrington, thc book we last read, is entirely i t Ireland, or nearly so ; thc story a pleasant one ; plenty of incidents, and well worth perusal. Peter Barrington, and his sister Dinah, .are fino specimens of their type. Polly DJ1, ono .of thc mos: universally accomplished young ladies we have ever come across, even in a noval. She is au adept in everything she puts her hand to, from breaking a horse to making conservo of roses ; and tho way she " quizzed" her brother Tom in his medical examination, toiling him about the glenoid cavity, popliteal space, and the fifth pair of nerves, would have entitled hor to the professorship of anatomy in Dr. ELIZABETH BLACK? WELL'S college. LEVER las his faults, as already remarked, sameness being one of the worst; still he ie au ac? complished raconteur, and never fails to interest his reader. But he is long past his prime; his latter novels certainly begin to show that tho racy freshness of youth is gone. We miss the fire, the elau of tho Irish Dragoon. A more serious charge against our author, however-strange as it may sound to thc unreflecting reader-is a want of pa? triotism; that with all his talk about Ireland, he has no true sympathy with her people. His he? roes are invariably from the higher classes of society; not that we object to this perse, but wc arc too democratic not to reprehend his utterly ignorin.; all that is good, generous and noble in the peasantry, and only holding them up as ob? ject? of ridiculo. A strong contrast to this is CARLETON, who, in his inimitable tales of Irish life, does ample justice to these warm, eeuerou?, trustful natures. _ TUE Italian correspondent of the London Times savs : "Mademoiselle Adelina Patti is now hi Italy foi- the first time. She appeared on the 11th at the Fagllano Theatre, at Florence, with unequivo? cal success. Considerable doubts were entertained even by her friends o:' her ability to sustain the reputation which she has gained in England and France, before so critical un audience as the opera going world in Italy. The theatre, which is one of thc largest, if not tin- largest, io Italy, lia? been recently redecorated, and tue space for the au? dience increased. It was reopened, on the occa? sion of Mdlle. Patti's debut, with the old favorite .opora of 'La Somn?mbula,1 in which the character of Amina was charmingly sustained by the young prinui donna, who fairly took a crammed house? by Storm; and the critics" who went, anticipating a failure, reman;"'! to give a justly merited applause. Mdlle. Patti is engaged to sing for ten nights, and after the expiration of her engagement will, it is understood, visit sumo of the other cities in Italy." First Premium Steam Saw-Mills.
