very full mail by tho land route, which brought us
dates of the 18th jnet. from Richmond and Wash
ington, and the 16th from Baltimore, Philadelphia,
Now York, Boston and Cincinnati, and the 14th
from Chicago. It is true this Is a littlo slow, but
as soon aB tho roads got aomowbat moro in trim,
and a supply of new rolling stock, wo may oxpect
the restoration of tho old schedulo which existed
before tho war. We have mado some extracts
-from Washington papers of tho 18th, which will bo
found in our columns. We notico among tho
items that tho Georgia Central Railroad, from Sa
vannah U> aincon, has got such assistance from
Iho Government as will enablo it ?o completo tho
traok tlirough to Macon at an early date. _ ci
Laps some of our roads might benefit by trying to
got similar assistance.

licat, a chango took place on Tuesday night last,
and tho wind, blowing freshly from the northeast,
gave indications of a gale, and tho air became

Captain L. M. Mtjbbay.?The friends of Captain
JL. M. Murray, formerly of tho New York and
Charleston BteamorB, will bo pleased to learn that
he has been appointed to tho now and elegant
steamship Vera Orun, which is now employed as a
packet botwoen Now York, Havana and Vera Cruz.
Robberies_Tho frequent robberies that have
lately taken placo in our city show, it appoars to
us, a now clement in the population. From the
day of the evacuation of tho city to a abort time
ago, wc havo boon singularly freo from crime, and
our houses havo been roinnrkably exempt from
Visits by robbers. Our citizens could retiro to bed
without tho foar of being disturbed by house
breakers "plying their vocation," and geutlemon
wtM lnave monoy in their pockets, knowing they
could find it there when iiiT ?nan the next morn
ing. But now one dreams of tho music of tho mal
let and tho chisel, and aflrightedly wakons up ex
pecting to soo a door or a window broken opeu,
and a dusky head protruding through it; while
others, from tho fear of thieves, and additional
reasons of a slight nature, go to sleep withouv any
money in their pockets. It is certainly hard upon
our citizens who are nervous, that they cannot en
joy a sound sloop after a day of toil, from a feeling
of insecurity; and it is really requisite that some
thing should be dono to stop the marauding and
stealing at. nights which is going on at tho pres
ent timo. A patrol of young men in tuo neigh
borhood of apota that aro heilig frequently visited

for on application to the Commander of tho Post
we have no doubt he would equip them with arms
