The Bells of St. Michael's Cnuncn.?Many
inquiries, of late, having buen mude of the fate of
Hurt beautiful chime of belle, whoao sound at
tracted tho attention of all ?tranger? who over
.board them on the Sabbath, and whoso notes upon
tho ears of those who were raised within the? hear
ing of Ihem never can be forgotton, wo have to
reply, that after being taken down from the stee
ple tliey were removed to Columbia, and there
placed upon the railroad platform, where they re
mained until Gen. Sherman's entry into that city
last February, when they were broken up and de
stroyed by his troops.
Thcso bells had been taken down beforo the
evacuation of Charleston by tho British in 1781,
and sent to England by Major Traille, of the
Boyal Artillery, who claimed them aa a military
perquisite. They were tliero aold at auction to a
Mr. Bybenew, who shipped them back to this city
as a commercial adventure; but when they were
landed on the wharf the overjoyed citizens took
possession of them, and replaced them in their
former positions In the steeple. Thia gentleman
shortly after became bankrupt, and nothing fur
ther was ever heard of the transaction.
Fatal Occurrence.?Ou Monday night, at about
11 o'clock, Thomas GoRDOtf, residing at No. 5
Church-street, and who for somo time back has
been employed on the Detective for?a of this city,
jumped from a window of the fourth story of his
house, and was instantly lulled. Cause: Delirium
tremciiB.

this morning, merely slating that all kinds of
painting arc done by these gentlemen?as, for in
-tancc, the flag which hangs before our door in
forming the public of tho whereabouts of the
Daily News.
Nathan fi Ottolenoui.?Passing the corner of
vVcntworth and Meeting streets, this morning, we
glanced at the establishment which is to be occu
pied by these gentlemen for the carrying on of
their transactions. The repairs are nearly com
pleted, wo are happy to say, and in a short time
we may expect to sec a lively timo at this place, if
the knowledge and experience of Mr. Nathan, and
tho superior qualifications aa a salesman of Mr.
Ottolen?ui, can make and retain a capital busi
ness.

Attention is particularly directed to the card of
H. L. Jeffers it Co., in to-day's issue. Thia firm,
for many years known as Cothran, Jeffers & Co.,
in this city, did a very extensive business, \vhich
was interrupted by the war; and they have now
returned to resume their former occupation, and
continue their services to their friends.
Groceries, etc.?James C?ntwell, at the north
east corner of King and Market-streets, advertises
this morning au excellent ami varied assortment
of groceries. Mr. Cantwell baa long ago estab
lished such a character for industry and correct
ness, as to give him a high position among the
merchants of the city. See his several advertise
ments.
Commercial House.?We aro gratified to see
thia popular old establishment, at the northeast
corner of Church and Queoii-strcots, opened again,
and wish for it a return of the bright days it once
experienced. The proprietor, Mi'. C, Ostich, is
well known as a thriving, industrious gentleman,
deserving well tho patronage of the public. See

Live Oak Club House.?Tho card of tho pro
prietors of this establishment demands attention.
The dinners and suppers served to order, are not
?surpassed by any in the country, and have, with
other mutters, rendered this house so very popu
lar.

Chicago has mado its seventh annual statement
from which it appear* that there arc soventoci
grain warohouaos in that city, with a total capacitj
0,035,000 bushels. Of those, two have a capacity ol
of a million and a quarter each: the lowest is 75,00(
bushel?. The business in produce shows a slight
falling off in nearly every instance from the tig
uros of tho yoar prccoding. The receipts of flom
?luring tho yoar amounted to 1,170,273 barrels
?gahiBt 1,424,055 barrels received during the pre
ceding year. The total shipments of Uour during
tho samo yoar amounted to 1,287,545 barrels
against 1,507,81G barrel? in the year 18G9-4. These
statistics show a slight decrease in tho trade foi
tho past yoar, due chiefly to tho unsettled state ol
tu? ui-ikot and tho-fluotualioiM- in, gold, as- wel
as to tho high ratos of freight that ruled after tin
cloao of navigation. Tho manufacturo of hiiil
wines In that city during tho yoar'?8R4, amounted
to only C8,?355 barr?la; equal to 8,498,at5 gallons
