A DEGRADED SOLDIER-In passing the corner of
Broad and Meeting-streets, yosterday, we saw a
fine looking soldier, a member of thc 47th Penn.
Vol., standing on a barrel, as a punishment, we
presume, with a placard marked "thief1 attached
io his back. It ?H a melancholy reflection that a
man who has faced "danger at the cannons
w mouth," should so far forget himself as to be liable
io such, disgrace, and so public, a degradation. Wc
hope this example will bc jo salutary as to pre?
vent a repetition of this peculiar punishment.
NICKERSON'.S HOTEL.-By reference "to an adver?
tisement in our paper to-day, it will be seen that"
this establishment in Columbia is now open. To
pass encomiums upon tho ability of such a veteran
in his business as Mr. NtCKEnsoN, is certainly not
our province, for his praisos aro in everybody's
mouth. We congratulate our sister city on the
re-opcning of a fine hotel, under tho former cour?

with which our railroads aro being repaired.

present rate of reconstruction, it will bc some

But a new business has also been developed out

MAX MARETZER ON THE N. Y. HERALD.- I have
never regarded it as a tic of affection between the
editor of thc Herald and myself that we both hap
