Tn passing the corner of Broad and Meeting-streets, yesterday, we saw a fine looking soldier, a member of tho 47th Penn. Vol., standing on a barrel, as a punishment, we presume, with a placard marked "thief attached to his back. It is a melancholy reflection that a man who has faced "danger at the cannon's iiiouth," should so far forget himself as to bo Hablo to such disgrace, and ao public a degradation. We hope this example will be hd salutary as to pre vent a repetition of this peculiar punishment. Presidents and directors are persistent in t'evel oping such resources as they can command; but funds are scarce, aud every bar of iron and every croas-tio has to bo paid for in money. At the present rato of reconstruction, it will be some time yet ere the locomotivo will rango over its for mer extended routes. In the mean time travel goes on?tho primitive times of May and Jane, in back-broaking, side-aching wagons are passed, and wo now rido on springs, in comparative comfort. But a new business has also been developed out of tho necessities of the times. Every village in the up-coontry now has its enterprising store keepers?stocks of goods are permeating to every district, and tho work of transporting merchan dise to all these distant points, and the hauling of cotton to tho hcads^of our railroads, has developed a wagon business which brings to mind thoso long-a-go times when railroads were not, and when the sharp crack of the whip, and the merry ging'.e of bolls, told of prosperity on tho old Charleston business mart, which centered around tho "Bull's Head Tavorn," on King-street Road, long kept in great comfort by our now venerable towusnian, T. W. Johnson. But our intention was to speak of the facility with which our country friends now dispatch their cotton to Charleston and receive in eschango their assorted stocks of merchandise for the. local trade. The business of transportation having been sys tematized, nothing ia easier than to soil tho cot ton and deliver it in Charleston,-buy a stock of .goods hero, and have them transported to any part of the intorior.
