lie thanked for the very cleanly state in which tho
atrcetB aro now kept, and for tho prompt mannor
in which offal and garbago arc removed from them.
At this particular season of tho yoar the inspec
tors cannot bo too vigilant in tho oxerciao of thoir
duties, nor tho laborera too activo in taking off
-foul matter, that tho action of tho Bun may in a
*?ery short time render pestilent. Any noglcct or
inattention on tho part of thoso officer? might
cause diseaao of such a character as to throw
"back, to a great extent, tho prosperity which ia
"beginning to enliven our city; boBidos, tho indi
vidual Buffering that remi8Bne38 of duty might
?bring upon ub, should cause tho greatest diligence
on their part to promoto i ta health. But, at pres
ent, there aro no causes for complaint that we can
pee?all concorned seem to bo aaxioua to keep off
miaehiof of every kind, and are ?paring no pains
or labor to carry out this great hope of the hearts
of all.
We perceive, aleo, with groat pleasure, that tho
aide-walks of our streets are being repaired and
xoally improved, much to tho comfort of ladica
*with tight BhocB, and rheumatic male pedestrians.
?Chore are not mnny things in this world that we
can say wo dospise, but we vow that we heartily
abhor rugged and uneven pavements, for they
Jiave played ua ao many tricks in our life, that wo
(bolievo tho hatred ia mutual. Thore nevor waa a
Jjrick higher than the rest, or a hole in tho pavc
-rnent, that we did not go precipitately over the
oue, and rapidly into the other; nor did wo over,
with tbat graco which has so peculiarly marked
Us, ever attempt to pull our hat to a blushing
young lady, that we didn't go through one or the
other of theao performances, much to the delight
of the little boyB in the neighborhood, and more
to the damage of ourselves and our hat. Ought
*wo not, then, to be pleased at seeing these ropairs
going on, and at the thought of ceaaing our gym
naBtic exercises, which wc discovered long ago
didn't pay. Wo are pleased, and tendor to the
authorities our individual thanks, and pronounce
them all bricks but tho night watchmen, and thoy
are bats.

sioned by tho doath of the late ittctimbent, Jas. S.

Ratlboad Ib?n-.?Three cargoes of this impor
tant article has arrived here within a few days,
consigned to the South Carolina Railroad Company.
"We trust that this is an indication that thoy intend
to push their railroad connections through to Co
lumbia and Augusta with all the force that thoy
Can command. Freight, in large quantities, is at
Augusta awaiting transportation, and cannot be
got away, owing to tho low stage of tho Savannah
Hiver and tho breaking up of railroad communi
cation with tho acaboard. Some light draft boats,
?n the Savannah, are getting enormou8 freights.
The transportation facilities to the upper portion
of our own State are exceedingly bad, and pasBcn
gera and freight are aubject to great expense and
lose of time in having to reBort to the old wagon
eyatem. We cannot havo any mail faculties until
the railroad connections arc made; and aa the
Government baa contracted to have the mails
transported through Carolina, wo presume they
arc only waiting for our roads to be connected to
. give us a daily mail.

gentleman has authorized Mr. Geobok D. Woot
TON, attorney at law, on Main-atreet, near the cor
Bor of Sixth, to purchase any number of them not
exceeding ton thousand, at what their face calla
for, to bo paid dollar for dollar in greenbacks.
Jtr. Wootton has already received a large num
ber, but ut ill the demand ia nothing liko supplied.
The "Richmond Republic" of the 18th saya: Gen.
Joseph E. Johnston and lady reached the city
yesterday evening, and aro atopping at the Spota
-frood Hotel.
The Savannah Daily ifera'tl, of Saturday last.
in its commercial column, sayB:
Tho resumption of railway travel between Sa
vannah and Auguata. aa also tho forwarding of
goods by tho road, will groatly relievo our mer
chants. On Monday morning next the trains by
the (/'entrai Railroad will connect at Station 4.1
frith hacks running to Wayneaboro', and thence to
Auguata by tho Augusta and Savannah Railroad.
Savannah and Augusta, by this arrangement, are
?brought within twenty-two hours' travoL
Gov. Pierpont, of Va., has sont McMullen, a
"member of tho Southern Congress, a dologato to
-Washington to get regro troops removed from
Virginia. Ko movement has been made in that
?direction by the War Department.
A number of Northern capitalists have takea
bold of the James Rivor and liana wh a Canal, and
intend to have that important artery of trado opon
for business in time to Dring to market tho coming
crops of the region of country tributary to it.
A Richmond correspondent of tho New York Tri
bune says that General Terry was openly insulted
?by being hissed, while riding through tho atrceta
?a few days since. ,
Tho Holston Conference of the Methodist Epis
oopal Church will meet at Marion, Smytho county,
va., on tho 14th proximo. Bishop Andrews will
