The City Market.?On Saturday morning last
tve? walked through this very nocosaary and uaoful
institution, and wcro much ploascd with ita ap
pearance. In tho ilrst place, it waa as clean as a
penny; and in tho next, it was so well supplied,
that a Btudcnt of gastronomy could havo devoted
aiiauy hours to dolightful study. The moat stalls
grorc well filled with fine parts of beef, mutton,
pork, &c, at pricca to suit tho times and pockets,
as wo should judgo by the number of purchasers
tve saw surrounding the butchers. Tho vegetable
Snarkots wcro abundantly supplied with esculents
of every kind, and, with that tasto that has always
distinguished our market women, beautifully ar
ranged. Beans, peas, okra, tomatoes, squaahos,
Ac, Ac., wero very plentiful. The fruit depart
ment was moro scant than it generally is at this
eeason, owing to great shortness of the crop.
Thero were some melons, however, of huge Bize?
certainly tho best wo have soon this year. The
fish market was not very striking aB to variety,
?but bhickfish were plenty, with a few chub and
)bBB8.
Wo noticed in our stroll a few innovations upon
old custome, brought about, no doubt, by tho now
clement that is every day mixing with us and in
grafting upon us thoir industrial habits. Books
and papers may be purchasod there, and razors,
?HUBhcs, thimbles, scissors, and all tho littleknick
Jiiiacka it is presumed the housewife needs, cither
for herself ?r the old man at home. Cold cooked
meats and fish can alao be obtained, with concomi
tants, so that ho who runs may cat, and wo are
told, too, at & very small expense. Theso matters

more and more, as each new day succeeds the last,

Arrival of tue Moneka.?Tho steamship
'JMoneka, Captain C. ?P. Marshman, from New
J'ork, which port she left on Thursday afternoon,
24th inst., reached her wharf in this city early on
?Sunday forenoon, bringing an oxcellent freight and
Bomo passengers. We are indebted to her purser
for late Northorn paper?.
Arrival of the Quaker City.?The splendid
steamship Quaker City reached this place on Sun
day forenoon, from Now York. She has just been
overhauled, looks in elegant order, and wheu she
?gets in good working condition will undoubtedly
travel hor routo aa quick as anything afloat. She
?belongs -to tho Leahy line, and is consigned to Mr.
Thaddecs Street. We are indebted ' to Purser

The steamship Quaker City, recoutly purchased
. T)y tho Loary Brothers from the Government, has
?been elegantly fitted up and furnished by them for
their Charleston line of packets, for which port
Bho will loavo to-day at three P. M., from pier No.
14, East River, foot of Wall-stroet. Tho Quaker
City was a favorito with the travoling public pre
vious to tho war, owing to her groat speed and
easy sea-going qualities: now sho possesBCs addi
tional attractions in her large and airy staterooms
and spaoioiiM cabins, which must bo soon to be ap
preciated, no cxpon.se having been spared in alter
ing her to suit tho tastes and requirements of tho
times. Tho Quakor City is commanded by Captain
West, who baa retired from the Navy for "that pur

Northeastern Railroad.?Mr. Alexander Con
31IE, who bas long boon connected with this road
as conductor, has recently been appointed to tho
position of Assistant Superintendent. To the en
ergy of Mr. C. tho company aB well as the public
are greatly indebted for the speedy reconstruction
. of the trestles and bridges which has enabled tho
xoad to resume its work; aud wo congratulate him
jjipon his promotion, feeling satisfied that the office
could not have been conferred upon one who pos
sesses moro fully tho confidence of tho.community.
We take this occasion to refer our readers to tho
"chango of schedule of thia road, commencing to
day, and to say that arrangements have been made
?by which baggage and freight will be convoyed in
cars over tho Santee Bivor, without breaking bulk.
?Several cars havo already been transported over.
Accident.?Whilo a car on the Northeastern
Railroad, loaded with government stores, was be
ing lowered down tho inclined plane on this side of
the Santco River, tho hawsor with which it was
connected parted, and with great speed it was pre
cipitated into tho stream. It was immediately
?brought alongsido the bank, tho roof taken off,
and the contents carried ashore. As barrels of
hard tack and salt beef wero tho only paascngors
it contained, wo are happy to say that .no lives
tvero loBt, though several wore badly damagod.
The cabio, which was in bad condition, has been
?replaced by one of suporior quality.
W. Ashmead Cohhtenay.?This gentleman, now
in Nowbcrry, publishes a card iu our columns this

enterprise, and that it will expand into a business
