Wan Killed at Sloan's Ferry.
A distressing accident occurred last

who was employed on the construction

were badly injured.
lt is not known just what caused the

The body of Mr. Allen was brought
to the city Thursday night and em
balmed by G. P. Tolly & Son. On
Friday it was shipped to bis homo at

Death of Mrs. Aiken.
The Washington correspondent of
The News and Courier, under date of

Wyatt Aiken, of Abbeville, died hero
today at Providencu Hospital, after a
snort illness from peritonitis, compli
cated with pleurisy. Mrs. Aiken find
been quito ill for several weeks prior

after lingering a few hours, she passed

Tho cold wave of thc past two ?lays
has cause?! much uneasiness among the
gardeners and fruit growers for fear of
a freeze. There is a quantity of young
fruit to bo seen in this section-it hav
ing escaped the frosts-and it would
probably take nothing less than a
freeze to injure flu- crop now.
Some ot our farmers have planted
their cotton and ure beginning to fear j
that they have been too hasty with the
planting.
Tho base ball lever has seized Helton
and there aro frequent battles between
the school team and the town team.

The James Shelby's Show came to
town on Friday and gave two perfor
mances. Everyone who "took in" tho
show seemed much pleased with the
two little actresses.

Colored County Fair.
A large crowd is expected to be at
the next meeting of the Colored Coun
ty Fair Association, which will be held
at the Greeley Institute on next Satur
day, the 23rd inst., at 2 o'clock p. m.
Two important questions will be con
sidered-plans for the appropriate cele
bration of the 4th of July, and the
question of founding and building up
a first class high school and industrial
college in the city of Anderson.
Every well disposed person is ear

age from frost, but the damage is
