SINGING Indian ?rirl Sells Hers A daughter'a unselfish love for a parent has been proven by the strang est of all strange transactions that could possibly take place in eivilizcd America. \ \ The other day, in a Kiowa1 village in Indian Territory, an educated and unusually attractive girl of Indian birth offered herself at auction to the highest bidder, thus gainihg, by the only means which her loyalty and affection could devise, money to can cel a debt of honor whioh her father had died without paying. "Singing Swan" is the girl's name, ind the sum for whioh she bartered her liberty was $25,000. The Kiowa reservation is located in the southwestern part of the Terri tory, adjacent to the Comanches. These Indians draw their supplies at Fort Sile. They were amongst tho last of the wild tribes to settle on a reservation. Many of them aro yet little more than "blanket Indians," though some of them, like "Harry Ed???" and "Lona Wolf." are mr dally educated. Several have grown rich vy trading zs stoc? and lessing land. "Singing Swan" has always been devoted to the interests of her people, and they have in turn regarded her with affection and respect. Her blame; less charaoter and sincerity of purpose have won the esteem of all tho white frontiersmen, and many an opportu nity In?.H been hers to say "yes" to an admirer, for there are few men among the settlers along.the frontier who object to Indian blood in a wife. No one in the village suspected that "Singing Swan"-contemplated taking so radioal a step, although it was no secret among the settlers "and her tri bal folk for many miles around that she had held her father with an idola trous regard, had mourned his loss keenly, and had grieved over the fact that a debt which he could not wipe out lived after him, and a debtor whose claim she could not pacify continually harraesed her. "Iron Talk," the father of this re markable girl, was a great ohief, and at one period of his career was regard ed as one of the moBt prosperous In dians in the territory. ? In his old age, when the country became easy of access through the building of numer ous railroads,.'shrewd white traders crowded sip?n the reservations and into the villages. "Iron Talk" was distinguished for his hospitality Mid friendly .disposition toward all enter prises oaloulated to improve the coun try and elevate his people. In con sequence, he was easily induced to embark in many ruinous financial ven tures. Before he died he borrowed a large sum from a money lender which he was neve:- able to return, though it is said that the relentless oreditor Beised upon property belonging to the estate which ought to have satisfied him* He has kept his judgment for about six thousand dollars alive for &?. iVa-i J:.I..." Os his death bed "Iron Talk" tried to settle the debt by assigning to his . creditor a noto secured by a Mortgage on a wealthy Kiowa's herd h'i cattle, made payable in the next world. "It is good," said the dying Kiowa chief. "When wo meet nt the throne of the great Spirit the mortgage will be paid." The white money, lender's faith did not reach so far. That sys tem of finance possessed no charms for Shy look. He preferred to annoy the dead chief's heirs. "Singing Swan" had tried hard to pay this claim against her father's/estate. She chose a feast day when a large crowd composed of white traders, cattlemen, Indians, half-breeds, nomads and gamblers had gathered in the village street. When "Singing Swan" appeared among them, clad gayly in the rich toy?) robes of her t-ibo, al! ?yea were turned upoto her in admiration. It Was the moment for her to act. Sud ; denly mounting a box.she stood, a dramatic figaro amid most picturesque surroundings. She began to chant in a ?weet olear voioe a favorite Kiowa melody. . At once she was surrounded by a cheering throng. With a grace ful gesture of p*scj bro o se, rounded arm she commanded silence, and spoke, "Who wants ? wif??" she ?eked pf ; SWAN. leif for H'ath.er's Debts. the astonished crowd. There was an earnestness in her voice aud face that forbade a jesting reply. "Who wants a wife?" repeated thc trembling girl. "I am for sale. To the highest bidder L will execute a bill of sale of myself. 1 am about eighteen years old. I can read and write, and am considered a good house keeper. I can make good bread and the sweetest kind of oakes and pies. I can ride a mustang, milk cows and throw a rope. The robe and the jew els I wear will not bo included in the sale. They aro the property o' tho royal family of Kiowas. They havo belonged to successive generations of ruling females in the families of our chiefs for many generations. Since there are no longer chiefs possessing the tribal dignities, I have Hold the royal robes and the jewels to a wealth y white l&dy in St. Louis for $1,500. I promise to make the mau who buys me a good wife, provided he treats mo well. Who bids for 'Singing Swan?' " The young warriors could hardly oredit their eyeB and ears. "Singing Swan" never looked lovelier. Her blaok eyes Sparkled and her long dark hair, falling below her belt, mingled with the brilliant colors of her apparel. Strands of fresh-water pearls and hun dreds of elk teeth, burnished and tip ped with gold, flashed from her neck and arms and every seam of her cost ly garments. Finally a young Kiowa brave spur red his pony nearer. Few heard the words of the bidder, but ?at' next in stant the giri exclaimed: "One thous and dollars I am offered! Wno bids more?" i ^ "Six Killer," a rich Cherokee, in stantly shouted, "I will give $5,000 in gold for 'Singing Swan.' " "It is not enough to pay my fath er's debt of honor," said the maiden. At that moment old "Jim Crow," <a famous, wealthy "white" Indian, shouted, "1 need a housekeeper, and if 'Singing Swan' will take kindly to bid Jim I will put a check for $10,000 in one of her little hands." "You oan't get her,*' roared the Cherokee; "311,000." "Oan't I?" retorted Jim, throwing his Winchester across his left arm and drawing a long pieoe of glittering steel from his belt. "Wo -will see about that, Mr. Injin. Shout $15,000, Miss Singling Swan, and tell 'em to come again." . The two men glared at'each other, to the great delight of the crowd, and no doubt to the intense satisfaction of the Indian girl. They continued bidding until Jim shouted."$25,000." As the angry Cherokee turned h horse and galloped away, tbs otowd roared with laughter, and When they saw the smiling . beauty holding her hands towards the successful bid der and heard her say, "Here, Mr. Crow; come and take your property." they filled thc air with Cheers. "Singing Swan" had fallen into the hands of a . strange bot trustworthy character. His wife, who was a half blood Chiokasaw, had been dead for several years, but he lias a large f am i ly of hoys and girls and is reputed to be worth a quarter of a million dollars He led the girl to the house of friend and gave her a check for tho ! amount premised; Telling her that he would call for her in a few mpments, he hunted-for John frioRae and asked for the note that he held against Iron Talk. A California Flying Machine San Francisco, Ca!., Oct. 18.-Dr. August Groth, who for a year past has been working on an airship today surprised the residents of San Fran cisco by sailing over their heads for two hours, directing his machino al most at will and demonstrating that in many essentials ho has solved the problem of aorial navigation. Dr. Groth had previously tested his air shin, bv makins annonsiona with the balloon held captivo by a long rope, but today was the first timo ho had gono skyward fxeo. The ascension was made from a lot almost in the heart of the city and Dr. Greth attempted to encircle a tow ering newspaper building about a mile eastward, but found the high currents too strong for his power and then turned in th a opposite direction. Tho winds carried him occanward and for a timo he hovered over the vicinity of the Golden Gate, making various sue oes&ful trials of his steering gear. Tho balloon of Greth is oigar shaped and has a capacity of 50.000 feet of gas with a lifting capacity of 1,800 to 2,000 pounds.
